So when do we get 100Mbps broadband speeds then? eh… eh…

In South Korea, broadband subscribers are now able to get 100Mbps connections from a company called ARRIS who have over 1.1 million video subscribers. This is all thanks to DOCSIS 3.0 which is the successor to DOCSIS 1.1 currently used by all cable ISP’s in North America and Europe.

So the real question is why we seem to be stuck in the past with most ISP’s still only offering a paltry 2mb. Where’s my 32meg or my 64meg connection at least.

Is speed really that important Mr Shopgenie? Good question young whippersnapper… and the answer is yes. Much more so now than before with the advent of movie houses and media companies finally starting to pull their finger out and offer TV and film downloads via broadband. Apple let you do this via iTunes, Channel 4 have announced that they are going to offer 99p downloads of 2 week old TV content from the major shows, and even Microsoft have announced that their Xbox 360 will accept high definition content downloaded to it and played back on the TV.

All of this content is much bigger than we’re used to with web pages and music - often 600mb or more. Even with my 8meg connection, this can often take up to an hour to download. With a 100meg connection - things would be so much faster.

So the question really is not why we don’t have faster broadband in the UK right now but WHEN are we going to have it so that we can make full use of this new media?

what’ll happen, shopgenie, is that they’ll sell it to us as “up to” 100Mb broadband, but actually we’ll be getting something like 1.5Mb download speed with 256Kb upload :-P

    lol true so true.
in the UK i thought we would be advanced. Even in france they have 100 Mbps coonectiosn for around 50 euros like 30 pounds a month”!”"”

we have an average of 8 mbs MAYBE…..and supposildy BT “new” network can handle 24 mbps. they charged us through the teeth for internet a few years a go with pay per minute costs… and now their juts dragging their heels on something which is vital to the economy….

The goverment needs to step in a and introduce incentives to level out the playing field.. i think virgin media is our one chance of achieving 100 mbps any time soon… or we just creat eour own virtual networj through Wimax ;)

Branson is missing the boat for once! if he can be first and soon with 100Mb at £40 pm or less then 8Mb adsl (2.6Mb av) would seem like dial up! Bingo! monopoly with BT left in wake and the adsl rivals would be fighting to survive and ripe for takeover along with their customers.
