Post Office broadband - finally!

Post Office broadband has been on the cards for some time, but since it's initial flurry of excitement we haven't heard a peep from the 400,000 customer strong home phone provider. Now it looks like the balance has been tipped in a somewhat controversial blending with BT, where the PO Broadband service will be realised. The first class connection should be available later in the year, though there has been no word yet on the cost of the supply.

The new P.O. BB will offer 2 services. The best of which will offer free wireless router, good anti-spam and anti-virus protection. Unlimited downloads as well.

If you take it with their Homephone service you will pay £26.95 for line rental and BB.

Come on Post Office, if you can offer Broadband for £9.99 a month with free router and setup fee you should be able to clean up. No tricks such as first 3 months cheap then whack the price up, just a plain "what you see is what you get".
We're all sick of the sleight of hand of most of the other ISPs.

Just what Ive been waing for. Broadband to go along with my Home Phone.

I need to ask a question first about the the download speed having to match my present speed with Pipex. Can I heck as like contact them....

I have spent some considerable time dialling the 0800 number only to be put
on hold having to listen to dreadful music. A huge response should have been
anticipated and extra call staff recruited....

Great phone manner, Nice people in general, But there service is appalling.
    Slight contradiction maybe?
    Let me explain;
I ordered my New phone line (£110) and HomePhone and Unlimited Broadband offer on the 17th October 07, They told me my line would be fitted before Noon on the Monday, So i took Monday morning off work to wait in, they never came, I waited and called in work to explain, at 3pm I called, they said that it was MY error and it was Tuesday, and she had the document there in front of her telling her so, fair enough I thought I may have heard wrong, Tuesday comes, I get someone to wait in for me, at 12:45 I get a phone call from the Phone line engineer, He had only just received a phone call asking him to fit the new line, so I had been lied to by the Post Office, as my new line was never on there "to do" list. So, new line over a day late, lied to, great.
Seconds, It is now the 20th November 07, and still, No Broadband?!? When I ordered on the 17th, I was told the latest it would be is 14 days from them, now clear of a month, and still not connected.
I would NOT recommend them to anyone, Which is a shame, because in general there staff are very helpful, but it seems that maybe this is just a front.
I just hope that I am a minority here, and I hope everyone else is receiving what they are paying for, Never know, I might have my broadband connected in time for Christmas.

Thought we were the only ones suffering till I found this.
We signed up on 25 Oct and have been given 4 dates already to go live, all came and passed with daily phone calls to their customer service to find out what was happening, got a router last week but still no welcome pack with pop settings/passwords etc. despite promises of putting one in the post about 4 times.
Last date we were given was 28.11.07, they disconnected us from our previous isp on that date as promised, so I fitted their router and set it up as per instructions - nothing - reset as per instructions - nothing, (my laptop connected to new router without a problem so I know it's not a faulty router)rang tech services who had no idea what the problem was and promised to do some tests and ring back, I'm still waiting for that phone call.
Then rang customer services who said 'you aren't due to go live till next week'. We now have no internet/email and will not be connected till next week - yeah,we've heard that before.
Does anyone at all have this up and running? or is it all a figment of imagination, I'm beginning to feel like we've been duped.

How I wish I had read this page first! I was promised connection on 4 December, but no router had arrived. I rang them, to be told (after a 25 minute wait for phone pickup) that the switchover date had been changed to 10 December. Now 10 December has arrived, still no router, still no switchover.

If they switch me over, I could presumably reconfigure my existing router to work until the router from PO arrives. But their website has no information about settings.

I sent OFCOM a letter about all this. At least that might put some pressure on, but to no avail so far.

This is a really poor experience, and I'm starting to wish I'd stayed with f2$.

Well, I'm finally up and running - after a fashion. I received the router a couple of days ago. But when I installed it there was no connection. I called and (after 30 minutes listening to 70s music) was told that my connection was put back to the 13th - the third different date I've been given.

Finally, today (the 13th) I'm connected. I have a machine wired to the router and working. I have not yet figured out how to set up other machines that use a wireless connection. If it can be done, it certainly isn't done by following the instructions. I have an 8 digit SSID and a 10 letter WPA code to enter, but after entering these I am not getting connections. Any advice anyone?

One thing to watch out for is that the Post Office service does not offer a POP email service. While it's easy enough to rig up a googlemail (or similar) service though to do this for you, it's mildly irritating that this should be necessary.

After two weeks of getting no where I cancelled my account and requested returns labels to send the router back. Called towards the end of November and found out that my account had not been cancelled and no one had logged it. Just called tonight and was more or less told the same. On asking if I would be charged for the on going account I was told that I would have to contact Customer Billing when I receive my bill!!! So basically thats a yes then!

    Maybe this is my problem.................
Seems they do have issues at the moment with there software,I came across this on another forum,

" As you will have seen the Post Office are spending a vast amount advertising it on TV.
Unfortunately due to software problem some have placed orders for Post
    office broadband and are given
connection dates but the order is not in place.

The only way out appears to be to cancel the order and place a new order,
    unfortunately
staff have been trying to cancel orders for the last week without success.
The software will not fully process the order but neither will it allow a
cancellation which means a new order cannot be placed on that line. If
anyone has placed an order and is migrating from another ISP it may be
prudent to check that your order is actually in place .

Remember it is a software problem and not the Post Office sales staff that
    are to blame. "

Oh dont even get me STARTED on the poor service from Post Office home phone and broadband. Home phone fine, went live when they said i would.
ordered homephone broadband extra package on 27th october. go live date was 7th November, I was told I would receive my welcome pak blah blah blah. waited for welcome pack, nothing arrived. I called them approx 5 days later to make sure all was well, was told not to worry would be with me before my go live date. probably the day before as that was 'normally' how it worked out for most customers.
On the Friday, 2nd November, I received a letter from them, stating i 'should have received my welcome pack by now' (haha!), and here was my password to go with my username that was in my welcome pack! I was annoyed, I rung them up and I said I have had no welcome pack and no router what is going on, when this letter was sent thursday 1st november, and I get it the NEXT DAY, how come i have yet to receive my welcome pack and router?! I was fuming. girl didnt know what to say tried blaming high level of customers requesting service, i said rubbish as this letter had no problems getting to me. was then told welcome pack was different department, then postal strike was to blame, i said i didnt buy that, postal strike was over months ago, she didnt have the answer i asked for a supervisor none available(convenient!), was told they would ring me back, noone did(not surprised!).
I called the next day, Saturday to be told that my router would take 5-10 working days to reach me, i was annoyed my internet connection date had been moved to 19th november.
I rung up general provisions dept as they send router etc, was told noone could deal with it as was weekend someone would call me monday noone did i rung back spoke to lovely guy there he dealt with it sent my router got it 2 days later, internet on 3 days before date given, not impressed very slow, not 8mps as stated i am sure!
I am just about to ring them about it, they have sent me a bill, no goodwill gesture removed as they said they would for all the hours i spent on the phone to them and for my inconvenience, despite not having a welcome pack and ample chance to set up loved ones numbers, so no discount on the calls they have charged me for, and no chance to cancel if i wanted to as no terms and conditions. i just found out also they are dreaded BT in disguise, which I am not happy about I did not want anything to do with BT. If they sort it out they can have their money but not until then. I am lodging complaint with the telecoms people about this i feel i have been fleeced, did not have these problems with PIPEX. Will update this after i try to contact them. sorry this was so long but i need to warn people about them they need to be sorted out. i dont buy the comment above about the software problems. After all, a bad workman ALWAYS blames his tools............................................................................................... lol

Too late Jason - I started off this experience with a full head of flowing locks but am now left with patchy grey stubble! Seems like I've experienced most of the above problems and more, so can only empathise with the 'polite staff but haven't got a clue' aspect. Training seems to be a real issue here. Also there seems to be no log from speaking from one person to the next and nobody ever calls back.
After several phone calls my broadband was up and running, but I must have requested a welcome pack on at least 6 separate occassions, but still haven't received one despite being assured that "it will definitely be sent this time".
Anyone know the 'secret trick' to getting one?

I have still heard nothing from this bunch of cowboys but I not prepared to ring up when you have to pay for the call. The phone line is with PO & they don't answer by email.
I have not as yet received a router or new live date. I was wondering if I could still cancel my broadband?

Been trying to get my old mum on-line since the 14th of November2007. Been promised five times she would be on-line by the end of the week. Racked up hours of billed calls to customer "services" . Don't bother e-mailing ! The dog ate the homework !? She has had enough. Talked to other providers, since we have not been connected we will not need a MAC code, just have to make sure the POST ORIFICE cancel the order with Bloody Terrible wholesale. They cannot stop her cancelling with no penalties (May not apply to everyone) My advice to anyone and everyone is if they will not connect you in within 28 days CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL

You can get through to customer services via the free sales no 0800 092 0500 currently option 4. Don't hold your breath for help, and be polite (its not the staffs fault) they have the habit of transferring you to cut off!

POP3 Does work (at least incoming see earlier post) anyone confirm smtp working

Anyone got the webspace working? failed here
Anyone successfully added a another email address? get account errors
Anyone managed to change/view payment options? "nothing on database!"

Not an ISP I'd recommend for customer service....
for that use Eclipse.co.uk and quote ref UPSALL

I had a letter from the PO to say my Broadband was due to go live on the 2nd Jan but the modem never arrived. I rang to find out what was happening and was told "The letter was wrong and I was actually going live on the 3rd. Modem arrived on the 3rd, plugged it in, set everything up and found I couldnt receive incoming mails. Another 4 hours later (on the phone) I was told they had a problem which was affecting their mail system and I wasnt the only one. "We will sort it out in 24 hours" I was told. Rang them again today (another hour on the phone listening to music until someone answered) to tell them I still couldnt receive mails and also to tell them exactly what I thought about their service (a shambles and a disgrace). It seems that you get excuse after excuse from their agents. I actually feel sorry for them for working for such a disorganised Company. Even some of the agents I have spoken to have admitted that the service is a disgrace.
I suppose that's what you get for trying to save money on a cheap Broadband service.

The Post Office are hopeless with their Customer Service, which is a great shame. Our service went live last week & the so-callled Plug & Play Router was anything but! It was found to be pre-configured with the wrong log in details. It took (no kidding) 20 phonecalls to resolve the matter. I started at 8:30am and througout the course of my day finaly had the matter sorted at 4:20pm. In between times I had every single excuse thrown at me from these people from service not live, to try in an hour etc.

I have written to the Managing Director of the Post Office Alan Cook OBE and also written to Jeff Jennings (So-Called Customer Service Director of Post Office Telecom) my enquries have so far revealed he is in fact the MD of a company called Stream Ltd which supplies the customer service and backup to the Post Office in association with BT Wholesale.

May I suggest to those that are having problems that you write to the above named via the 80 Old Hall Street Office London (recorded delivery best) I have also found that threatning to sue them via the County Court and asking for a District Judge to annul the contract seems to do the trick. - Our service is wonderfull now!

The staff at my post office were friendly. My router arrived on time BUT since then I have become dissillusioned and distraught.
I have tried every connotation of pop3/smtp and have finally received incoming mail BUT NONE OF MINE WILL GO OUT. I'm now totally confused.
The first time I went on the helpline was ten minutes without reaching anyone to speak to, so I wrote a letter of complaint. No reply as yet.
The second time I contacted Keria, took an hour of wiring and then finding a setup page, then in the middle of that she just said it was taking too long and I'd have to ring back the next day and start all over again.
When I rang back, twenty minute wait, they said they were having problems, I asked who would be paying for the call...
I've used computers since the ealy Amstrad days, but despite trying everything suggested on this page am left with a huge bill and the bleak prospect of having to pay forsomething I cannot use. I wish I'd never gone in that post office, and will be taking seps to try and cancel this half service.

I've suffered all these problems with p.o. phone and broadband package. I can never get through and when I finaly get through they can't help. I went live on November 29th and still haven't been able to sign in....after being given a second password I still can't sign in so I set up a hotmail email account instead. There is one problem that you all should look out for. I set up to pay monthly by direct debit so when I received a bill I ignored it. A week later I received the red letter bill. I tried to ring them on several occasions and couldn't get through and I couldn't check my bill online as I couldn't sign in. I rang my bank and was informed that the direct debit had been set up and the money was supposed to go out 28th dec but no money had been taken....I rang p.o. again and sat for 1 hour listening to their stupid music until finally someone answered the phone....She couldn't help and so put me on hold until she could find a supervisor....10 mins later she comes back and said she would have to ring me back as she couln't find the supervisor. She did ring me back and said they were having a problem with new accounts and could I pay this bill by credit card and someone would ring me back on Friday to set up my direct debit again...I paid this bill with my card but will be in touch with my bank to make sure I'm not going to pay twice for the same thing...I asked if someone could sort out my other problem not being able to sign in and was told that I would have to be put through to the tech dept.....customer service is appalling and it remains to be seen whether someone does ring me on Friday to at least get the direct debit sorted....I will let you all know Friday what happens with this...

Just set up the modem with my father-in-law's brand new PC. Following the printed instructions did result in automatic configuration, as intended.

The People's Post Office forgot to mention anywhere in its advertising, pre-sales literature or post-sales instructions that it expects you to abandon your familiar email client (Outlook Express or whatever) and use its unconventional browser-based interface.

    (a) How do you transfer your existing address book into that?

    (b) How can you switch over to a proper email client? [earlier posts have reported success with incoming messages but not with outgoing messages, which is hardly sufficient!]

When we first went onto Post Office Homephone the service was controlled in the south of England. At the time the line was slammed by a cowboy ISP and phone service the business had been moved to Londonderry Northern Ireland

At around this time BT become the wholesale provider to the Post Office after the service was routed over the Cable and Wireless network, it does seem a lot of the problems are involving the network provider, more than the Post Office themselves.

If you want to use any other e-mail address other than those provided by the Post Office. For other ISP's E-mail use all the required details for incoming e-mail, and if you use this code in 81.140.160.148 lieu of the SMTP details given by the Post Office you can send what e-mail address out with you mail, especially needed if you have you own domain name for e-mail

Interestingly, in the terms and conditions it states that you reserve the right to cancel your contract within 7 days of receiving the welcome pack and the PO will refund any payments you've made for phone and broadband.

Sending emails using other ISP email accounts.
    .
Many thanks to Len for suggesting 81.140.160.148 as the Outgoing Mail SMTP setting. It works fine, but how did you get this Len, and is it a secret backdoor access which the PO may just close at some time?
    .
Email is such an important part of home communication nowadays, and many families will have several email accounts from several providers. I find it incredible that a new ISP like the PO is offering a broadband package which does not allow non-PO accounts to be replied to. I have been in contact with them and they have confirmed that they do not support email clients like Outlook Express, and that they only provide their basic webmail facility. This is not acceptable.
    .
I have spent this morning looking for another provider to replace their poor offering, then happened to come across this forum. I hope Len's solution is a permanent one so that I don't have to start the ISP search all over again.
    .
    Thanks again Len.

The P.O. will do anything and everything to delay you cancelling and changing provider. The provisioning order mentioned by BILL is just one of their tricks . You ARE allowed to cancel if they fail to provide the contracted service within a reasonable time. You CAN insist that they cease all orders and transations on your line and account . We have cancelled the lot and they have refused to remove the ADSL provisioning on our line. This has the effect that we cannot go to another provider until they remove the mark. We are being held hostage! All ISPs we have contacted have said there is nothing they can do until the ADSL mark is taken off the line. We will probably not have a phone line for a fortnight after the 25th. We WILL get shoot of them. I Promise you. I will post the outcome when we go back online. My bill arrived on time and to my surprise i am paying line rental from the 1st of December even though the phone was not connected till the 14th of December, another shock was a connection fee of £93.62 which i was not told about before hand. Its to late for me now to cancel as my bill arrived 1 day after my 7 day cancellation period after the receipt of the welcome pack. But i do have hope that as they have broken their own terms and conditions of telling me before hand about any connection fees i should still have the right to cancel. Hi
changing to PO BB wasn't the easy plug and play as advertised. I went live on the 21st Jan. After two seperate hours on the help line my wireless router finally worked! My e mail has taken longer. Another call to help line told me they didn't support Outlook Express! Thanks a lot!

I found this very useful info on another blog which worked for me.

On Outlook Express go to Tools, Accounts. then add a new account.
The majority of the settings are fairly obvious. The Server settings are:-

    Incoming mail (POP3) - pop3.mypostoffice.co.uk

    Outgoing mail (smtp) - smtp.mypostoffice.co.uk

Account name - your e mail addres (ie xxx.xxxx@mypostoffice.co.uk)

Password - use your password you were given or changed to.

DO NOT SELECT 'log on using secure password authentication' or the 'my server requires authentication' buttons.

I have set up three e mail addresses as we have three users on our home computer and these settings worked for each user on their individual outlook express using their own e mail address as the account name and their password.

I have to add this didn't work initially so I sent an email to each new 'mypostoffice' address from another e mail address I have (ie Yahoo) and this seemed to kickstart it into action and now each users e mail works perfectly!

It is now the 27th (D Day plus 6!) and so far so good!

    Hope this helps.

    Hackers attack broadband routers
Internet criminals are targeting home broadband routers in an attempt to control users' internet connections.

A recent attack in Mexico proved that attackers can change settings in certain routers, redirecting users to malicious sites to steal their online banking details and other personal information.

The effect of the new attack is that, when a victim attempts to visit an important site such as a bank, he is sent instead to an identical-looking site that is under the control of the criminal. When users enter their username, password and any other authentication information, those details are sent to the fake site instead of the legitimate one. The criminal might collect these online banking usernames and passwords to use himself or to sell to other criminals.

Security company Symantec, which predicted this type of attack in early 2007, has discovered a recent real-life situation where Mexican users were targeted. As a result, attempts to access one of the largest banks in Mexico were redirected to a fake site.

This type of attack is most significant because it potentially affects all of the PCs, internet-connected games consoles and other web-aware devices using the router.

You might have the best anti-virus software and strongest desktop firewall product installed on the PC you use for banking but, if the unprotected games PC (used and abused by the kids) is the one to activate the malware, your secure computer will still end up at the fake site. This is because it most likely relies on the router to handle DNS, the system that maps host and domain names (eg. www.yourbank.com) to IP addresses (eg. 123.123.123.123). And the router is now loaded with the wrong settings.

Thomas Parsons, from Symantec Security Response, said that the attack had a low work-to-reward ratio. "In the
past they had to compromise particular PCs but, with a compromised router, all of the PCs are compromised automatically," he said.

So how does the attack actually work?

Contrary to much speculation on the web, the attack does not rely on uPNP.

The first stage in the Mexican scenario was that potential victims received spam emails containing a web link. Clicking on this link opened a page containing malicious code. The key here is that victims need to run malicious code on their systems for the attack to succeed. Avoiding bad sites and ignoring spam are useful ways to reduce the risk.

After the code runs, it attempts to compromise the router. There are a number of ways it could do this, including brute-forcing the administrator password or using a list of manufacturer default values.

In the Mexican case neither of these methods was necessary due to a design flaw in the 2Wire router that was targeted. A cross-site request forgery vulnerability allowed the malware to simply send a URI to the router in order to crack it. This technique can be used to set a password, add names to the DNS, disable wireless authentication and set dynamic DNS - and it doesn't need to use a password to gain access to these settings.

    Reduce the risks

It would be sensible to add an admin password, or change the password from the manufacturer's default to something harder to guess. However, in the case of 2Wire owners, updating to the latest firmware would be more important.

Another thing to watch out for are incorrect details for important sites' security certificates. You would expect a responsible bank to encrypt the connection as you log in, and this requires a valid SSL certificate. Most modern web browsers make it easy to examine the certificate's details.

Configuring every PC's networking settings manually, rather than using the automatic DHCP system provided by most routers, could also help. By adding your ISP's DNS addresses to each PC, rather than relying on the router, you would avoid being redirected by false DNS records on that router. .........SO BE CAREFULL OUT THERE PEOPLE...and most important be happy...lee

Well I'm sooooo glad I surfed and found this site. What an absolute nightmare. How I wish I'd never signed up to POst Office Broadband... finally got connected on 14th Jan. (08) - Had less then five good days service since. Have spoken to them 31 times! They won't log my complaints...nor will they allow me to cancel the contract. I have to continue paying for a year. When I ordered Homephone and Broadband they said I wouldn't have to pay a connection/new line fee. They've just charged me £93.62! When I get throught to (what seemed like a very nice guy) named Vincent Heggerty, he says I am entitled to cancel and financial compensation - if they can't get my email up and running - he promises to get Tech support to call me - still waiting. Lies, lies, lies. I will definately be writing to Jeff Jennings and Alan Cooke. Wish me luck.

I have been connected to Homephone/Broadband Standard package for the last 3 weeks. Have not experienced any problems with access in that time. However, I have not received a Welcome Pack, which contains the essential user name you need to access email, webspace, and as I understand, "account information". I have had repeated calls to customer support requesting this information, to no avail, and am now resorting to an escalated official complaint via the procedure described in terms and conditions and the "code of practice", both available on the web. So far that has not resulted in any response. The inference from customer support is that the part of the process tasked with delivering the so-called "welcome pack" is not working. I think the evidence suggests that as an outsourced customer support department, processes are not sufficiently in place and there is no proper escalation process to deal with issues and complaints.

Before asking my own question I thought I would confirm that I successfully use Outlook Express on PostOfficeBroadband

Incoming mail server setting is pop3.mypostoffice.co.uk
Outgoing mail server setting is smtp.mypostoffice .co.uk

I also had to set Outgoing Mail Server Requires Authentication.

All this works, although it took a month to get the info out of them!

    Now my question ...

The modem the postoffice supplied works Ok - but I am not convinced it has a firewall. So I wondered if anyone has connected successfully using a different modem to that supplied. I have just tried a Netgear DG834 with no luck (CHAP authentication failed). Could anyone confirm the settings? Or ideas?

    Encapsulation:
    PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
    Login:
    username@mypostoffice.co.uk
password (as used for accessing web mail and our account)

    Multiplexing Method: VC
    VPI: 0
    VCI: 38

Internet IP address - Get Dynamically from ISP
Domain Name Server - Get automatically from ISP.

    Thanks in advance

I purchased Broadband Standard. It works with the modem they supplied, however I am not convinced their modem contains a firewall so I have attempted to connect using a different modem router (Netgear DG834).

Unfortunately after much messing with settings I get "CHAP authentication failed".

The settings I am using are:

    Encapsulation: PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
    Multiplexing Method: VC
    VPI: 0
    VCI: 38
    UserName: myname@mypostoffice.co.uk
Password: Password used to access the web-mail.

Can anyone confirm these settings as it seems impossible to get the information out of the PostOffice.

    Thanks in advance

My mum brought the post office home and broadband package, she told them there was 2 computers in the house and they were not networked together, not a problem" yeah right! at the moment we have to keep unplugging and plugging the ethernet cable so that one of us can go on line but not both at same time as we were told. Also to cap it all off you spend hours on the phone holding and no-one deals with your complaints it you cancel sounds like you can't move to another isp and it cost you money when it is there fault and a company as big as this should not be getting away with it, why on earth instead of keep complaining do we put up with this get hold of your local MP, TV station, Radio station or even get hold of watchdog it's just not good enough.

I can't access my PO online account details either. I just phoned up to find out what's going on and apparently the server's down. I told them I haven't been able to get on there for a few days and the guy just said that it's been down 'for a while'. Not very promising!

He also said that you have to have been a customer for 3 months, which I have been, but I suppose that might be the reason why others can't get on?

Also I haven't received any of the 3 paper bills they have supposedly sent, but they are still happily taking the money out of my account. ARG!

Most people I have spoken to when I phone seem pretty incompetent and generally stupid to be honest.

Hi every one out there, I thought I was the only one with problems till I stumbled on this forum. I went live on December 20th I already had home phone, so thought there would be no problems, how wrong can you get? I have written to their Newcastle address, I have sent numerous e-mails and heard nothing in rsponse. I am getting phone calls asking why I have not answered e-mails, now I find that e-mails I have sent are not being received despite my sent box telling me that they have gone. This has got to be a form of fraud, a big con trick by the POST OFFICE. Who is this BOSS man who submits on the forum, he wants a modem sticking where it hurts. He talks a load of bull....

Type in www.hotmail.com in your tool bar, then click on hotmail free e-mails, then follow the instructions to open an account which is free, You can still use your PO account as back up for what it is worth, but I DONT THINK IT IS WORTH MUCH. In the last week I have lost out on 3 e-mails that I know of and one contained dated material. Nobody from the PO responds to complaints, I will admit I am happy with the broadband side. I would like to know who the BOSS man is who submitted an item on this forum

My father in law ordered home phone/broadband on the 5th February and we were promised an activation date for the phone of 15th Feb and broadband of 18th February.
Having read through all the problems that people have had with the Post Office service, I think it only fair that I should let readers of this blog know that we are on broadband - as promised - on 18th Feb. It is a little harder to tell if the phone went over on Friday 15th but BT stated that in their letter, so I expect that has been completed as well.
The only problem I am having is connecting a different router/modem to the DSL link from the one provided. The reason for this is that the username and evidently the password for the ADSL authentication are different to the username and password given in all the Welcome Packs etc. This is obvious when you log into the Netgear modem/router that the Post Office provide. Instead of the username being your email address it appears to be ..postoffice@mypostoffice.com. If you use that username in another router together with the password in your welcome pack (it is not possible to see the password that was automatically entered into the router during the auto-configuration stage) then authentication fails. I hope, having read others comments, that I can work this out with out having to ring them up!
So broadband was enabled as per their letters, on time and as described, but they are being sneaky about usernames and passwords for the DSL link, probably so that you buy a wireless router from them rather than sourcing your own.

You can backup the config from a working netgear and save it to a PC. When the file gets backed up it's almost plain ascii so you'll be able to see what the config should be.

I don't have access to one of these yet, so do let us know what happens.

fiurher to my last message on 24 jan ; i have just looked at my recent phone calls bill on line and to say we were shocked would be an understatement ! for example a local six minute call @ £205 is a bit excessive even for this bunch of cowboys. H aving read the comments above we are now worried about the secret connection charge. Naturally we phoned the CUSTOMER CARELESS number to sort out the obvious billing error [we hope] but were fobbed off with excuse number 76 from the book of 1ooo feeble excuses that they couldnt access customer accounts [at 7 in the evening] .If they insist their billing is correct then i have a bill of £10806!!!!. I am a non technical person, & it took my son 3 evenings to get the broadband to work.

1 I did not have an ethernet socket on the back of my PC, & was not asked when I phoned to sign up, if I had one. A new socket had to be bought at a cost of £10. Apparently they only have ethernet connections on their routers. It would have been nice to know!

2 I wanted to keep my old email address - not possible as must use mypostoffice. Apparently they do not support port 25 so you can use your old address for outgoing mail. You can receive mail, but not send it. I can receive old emails using my old email address, so to send out I am using my old address on dial up as I used to. CRAZY!!!

3 Also, if I send an email to myself on broadband to test the system, it takes 4, I repeat four, days to arrive. And in some case I think me emails are falling in a black hole.

My Post Office broadband went live yesterday as originally promised, although there seem to be a few teething troubles with the 'self-installing' modem, which I will have to look at again tonight.

Luckily I didn't have the same problems as many of you obviously have had with the telephone helpline, although I was unimpressed with their helpdesk taking yonks to reply to my email. Also, the modem arrived only just in time - thanks to my prompting them with a telephone call.

Like many of you, I am having trouble with the email. Using their own webmail is unreliable. However, I normally use Outlook to send / receive emails and that is where my main problem lies. Despite entering the correct server names, email addresses, ticking / unticking the relevant check boxes, etc, I cannot get Outlook to send emails via this account.

It appears from the comments above that these problems with sending mail are quite common, although others claim to have had no bother at all. I shall try using another mail server to send out my mails in future.

They really do need to improve their own mail server.

update from Feb 20th. My wife tried to phone the customer couldnt care less line on the 21st to try and sort out the excessive phone call pricing problem and they refusd to discuss it with her because the agreement is in my name. fair enough rules is rues but, as she tried to explain to the guy, i am (not to be too technical) as deaf as a post ! This does of course preclude the use of the telephone so i emailed the above department on the 22nd explaining the problem regarding the bill and also to authourize my wife to telephone on my behalf in future. They did in fact respond quite quickly ........ With a list of questions which stopped just short of blood type and what i had for breakfast. So up to now i have not received an answer to my original query but i am pleased to see that at least Brian R was alerted to the problem and he seems to have got an answer to the problem. Lets hope they they rectify the problem i, for one, will be much happier when i see the evidence on my screen in the form of the correct figures. In the meantime i recommend that you all check" MY RECENT PHONE CALLS " just in case you are one of the"few " but dont yet know it. the pop3 email server for the postoffice is pop3.mypostoffice.co.uk and the smtp server is smtp.mypostoffice.co.uk in outlook express when it asks for the account name and password it is your full email address and password that you use to login to your self care portal on the mypostoffice website. Also the service level is great now if you call in your guarenteed to be on to an agent within 20 seconds whether the agent is actually helpful is a different story. Also there is a huge problem with the emails the servers are relatively new and cannot deal with the amount of accounts that there are my best suggestion for this is to go to gmail, yahoo, hotmail they offer you 1gb upwards of storage and very fast and user friendly I am with BT myself and whether I have an email address is news to me ive never needed it I have a gmail account and I hoghly recomend it just go to www.gmail.com and sign up for free! I told the bloke that I had nothing but trouble since that date and it would be nice if I wasn't charged anyway as I'd had so many problems (tongue in cheek) Again I was told that they would have to check out the system to see exactly where the system had failed in not noting that I was a customer and they would ring me back. I changed to Post Office Broadband last Friday. All went well enough, good speeds etc, until I tried to use email and ran into the same problems others have experienced. I emailed the Post Office helpdesk and this is the reply I received, copied and pasted word for word - can you beleive it?

    Dear sir,

thankyou for your email. can you access emails through
www.mypostoffice.co.uk at all? this is the usual way to access the
emails as outlook express doesnt seem to be accepting our email server.
This could be because the post office are a relatively new broadband
provider and outlook has not made their programme to accept it etc.

    Thanks
    Post Office Telecoms Team

I'm now waiting for a further reply but don't hold out much hope of a sensible answer. By the way I have found a sort of fix; set up new Post Office addresses for myself and rest of family. Then, as per other replies, set up Outlook to receive your new PO emails. When you go to send an email in Outlook Express, you will see a drop down menu at the top of the email where the "from" address line is. Bring up your new PO email address and send it from there. At least you'll now be able to send and recieve until the PO find a proper fix.

The Post Office were very good at getting me started with Broadband. Excellent, simple instructions. The only problem was sorting out email. They failed to give any instructions as to the POP3 or SMTP address and I had to ring up to find out and it still wasn't easy. A similar simple guide would have sorted the problem and enhanced their reputation. Its working fine now on Windows Mail but it wasn't as easy at it should have been.

PO are obviously useless and why should we support PO if they are providing us with a bad service!!! I as many others have been with PO, lovely customer service apart from they couldnt help me but were polite at least!! Didnt have a dial tone on phone even though I had my broadband working. Called up and was advised there was no fault on line and that it must have been my phone. 3 calls later finally got them to check line and by MAGIC there was no line!! It had been cut somewhere along the line!! But fair play they did get someone out within 2weeks to fix it without a charge! But took a lot of uneeded hassle and calls to get a result!!

I have been with PO, since the end of last year.
No problems with it, as I have an MSN e-mail address.

    ONE PROBLEM, though..
(Not an old computer) - yet the connection speed is terrible. My grandma's pc (about a 10 year old computer), has a faster connection than mine.

Games take ages to download. A normal game, for me, takes about 3 days, according to the time on this thing and Youtube videos, I have to pause them and sit there and wait a good 15 minutes, for them to finish, so I can watch them.

I left BT, due to them not being able to fix the connection problems. We had to ring the phone and make it constantly engaged, just for the internet to work and they had tried everything, to find the solution and nobody ever knew.

PO, is great. If you don't mind slow connection speeds!

Just for people who are unsure if you are having a problem with your postoffice email on the website whether cant send receive email or you are getting an error message when you click on my email or if your getting cannot create folder error message on the left handside of my email section then you will also get errors with either outlook express windows mail eudora etc and will not be able to use it. Also some possible fixs for the email. If you are getting an error message when you click on my email in my account section and its something along the lines of "there is a problem with your account please try again in thirty minutes" Get a friend to send yourself a test email or send yourself a test email from another email account this can sometimes resolve the issue. If you are getting the problem where you click on my email link and it keeps refreshing back to my account section try deleting your internet cookies, temporary internet files and history. Just click in your internet explorer browser on tools -> then internet options and click delete cookies, delete files, clear history. Also in the general section of internet options click on settings and put a dot beside every visit to the page where it says check for newer versions of stored pages. And another possible fix is for people who have internet explorer verson 7 try disabling the phising filter just click on tools phising filter then turn off phising filter. Hope this is a bit of help.

I've had this service for two months now. The bills are incorrect, and the e-mail very rarely works. I am being charged for all the calls I have made to them to resolve the e-mail problems.

The postoffice e-mail service is 85% non-existent, and all you get when you ring up is 5 minutes crap music, and one minute "Yes sir, we are aware of the problem and working on it"
Even their staff sound fed-up with them.

Their sales brochure is an infringement of advertising laws!

I had serious problems getting a correct 'go live' date. First attempt failed but I had no router from them anyway. On the third attempt they still failed but the following day it suddenly happened without warning. The staff when you do get through (at least 40 min wait in the evening, apparently mornings are better) are really friendly (obviously they must be some of the few post office staff whos pension isn't being MAXWELLED at the moment. At least if you use the freephone number it doesn't cost anything other than time. I wrote to Alan Leighton (chairman) and Alan Cook (Post Office Exec) but I don't think they care, they just get paid huge amounts to close POs sell the land and wind the company (and the staff) up.
Don't bother with mypostoffice email addresses as the system can fail for days at a time. Setup a google address (you don't have to change it when you have had enough of postoffice broadband.)
Now it is working it is good/fast and cheap.
To those people who have had trouble with their connection, try unplugging all your phones. I had a problem years ago and left three ISP's in anger only to find my old BT phone was dragging the line down. It may not be the cause but it is worth ruling it out.

STAY CLEAR OF PO SERVICES! You have been warned they are a NIGHTMARE!

Brief list of my problems with PO.

    - No Fully working Email service. Its been over 3 months now.

    - Broadband service after the second week died and after 20 phone calls was eventually told that they had wiped my login details off of their servers and it would be 2 weeks before I was back on their system.....2 weeks later NOTHING!....another 10 phone calls later I was told it would be another 2 - 3 weeks before they could correct the problem!! Never been so disgusted with a company in my life!

    - They didn't complete my Migration from BT correctly using my MAC, so BT has now charged me for broadband for 3 months AFTER my migration to PO.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING IF YOU USED A MAC TO SWITCH TO PO BROADBAND: Double check that your previous provider has actually cancelled its service, PO did not follow standard procedures with my Migration, and BT has therefore charged me for broadband AFTER the date of my migration to PO.

I have an Imac and I cant connect to the internet at all. My network configs. are all correct, location and info. all there. The annoying thing is I just set up post office broadband on a friends Imac, easy peasy, so thought mine would be a piece of cake, having done it already. My only saving grace is that my previous provider has not cut me off yet, so am still able to connect with original router.
Sadly as post office dont support mac, I have to wait until Tuesday (being a bank hol.) to call Apple for help.
Does anyone have any useful suggestions that could be the reason for my lack of internet? I have also tried connecting with ethernet and still no internet???

hannah call them if your connection is 12 kb. it seems unlikely that the service would even work if that were the case so it's probably down to cabling in your home or something. plus all providers have 10 days of up and down.
I called like the other day and got through to tech within seconds when i was looking for some radius details. The service is live 4 or 5 months old so chill out a little why would you want to use email on the site anyway it's not like you can't get free email anywhere you go on the internet anyway and if you move provider you'll have to get a new email address again and go through the hassel of telling everyone what it is. If your looking for billing or loved ones just phone them it's a free number and i'm sure they would register the changes faster. From what i've read a lot of you have problems that exist from previous providers... in that case why did you expect any better seeing as everything is handled by bt on the phone lines and such so there's probably an actual physical problem with your connection that would obviously take a while to sort out. and again i see a few people here that seem to have computer based problems. If you do why would you call post office. call microsoft or whatever. the instructions on the set up tell you what lights say that your online so blame your computer. One last thing Who the hell signs up to a broadband provider for their email, i mean really come on thats just stupid lol.

this post office broadband is useless, two dodgy cheap and nasty modems that don't work, no e.mail in over 2 months, staff are pleasant but god love them they haven't got a clue and don't have any understanding of IT at any level. Ringing support is a complete waste of time they constantly tell you to keep on hold until they "test the line" which I have already done myself and I know for a fact it's the p.o's server's etc that simply aren't working properly.
finally established a connection 2 weeks after supposed to go live only for it crashing a week later, rang again to complain and was told it must be my pc, had to laugh because i've worked in computer programming since 1990 so i do have a bit of an idea about the set up on my machine:).
my brother in law works for microsoft and told me to go with BT but i didn't listen to him, now he's laughing his head off every time I tell him the lastest.
all in all the service from post office is completely unacceptable and is run by a bunch of amateur's who should stay in call centres and sales offices and away from IT.
anyone claimed a refund for lost service or connection delay etc yet?
good luck and keep at them!.
p.s if anyone from post office is reading, when i tell you my broadband service is down,it is down due to your own stupidity and not my set up or machine software!!!.

This does not look good for me then, I have been having major issues with an other supplier called Pipex (Tiscali, Bulldog and freeserve all the same company) I live in a 7.6Mb area and had no problem with Utility Warehouse a continuous 3.5Mb to 5Mb day in day out. Pipex where sold to me by a good and trusted friend and unknown to me had just been taken over my the hated Tiscali, my broadband is now slower than dial up at 10kbps between 4pm and 11pm then shoots up to 4-5Mb I know this is a contention issue but try and get them to take responsibility.

I will have to say this though the Pipex team lost all my details in November so no Broadband or telephone throughout Dec, they promised 3 months free broadband and telephone and also to help pay BT for the reconnection £120. Now they have lost all that to and refuse to listen or send me the recorded conversations. Pipex are a bunch of thieving, lying b*****ds.

I have now gone to the good olde Post Office and after reading all the previous am wondering if I have just done the pot to kettle trick. I hope not I have everything ready and go live on the 2nd of April (thank God it's not the 1st), is there anyone out there who has a good word to say about the PO? I also must say the call centre answered my call before it even rang, anything is better than this rubbish from Pipex (Tiscali, Bulldog and Freeserve) I would recommend semaphore before that bunch of companies.

When will we in Britain get the truth from these companies we all know that we will not get the speed they advertise yet they wont just tell us the real speeds (7Mb = 700kb download) if we where sold cars that way they would be telling us out Ford Focus would do over 1,200 MPH. I always thought mis selling was a crime? I think they call it fraud.

Ordered Post Office Broadband Extra on 7th April, received welcome pack saying I would be going live 0n 21st April.

Today (18thApril) phoned customer support as I am still waiting for my Router.

Was told that according to their system I had only ordered Home Phone package and that it would go live on 28th April.

Received a letter from B.T. saying that my phone account would discontinue on the 18th April at the request of the post office.

Told them I was not impressed and that I hope I get a better service when I go live.

Now have to wait for them to re-order a router and that I will not go live until 28th.

Apparently!!! the mix up was something to do with their automated ordering service (yeah, right).

Will let you know how I get on with setting up my email address.

    Should be interesting.

I have always been able to send via OE but not receive but after a lot of complaining am now able to receive on Microsoft Outlook, not ideal but better than nothing, but OE is a definite No, No, Anybody else in the same boat? I would like an answer as from what I have read, a lot of people are just carping about the other letter writers which isn't helpful to anyone who has asked a legitimate question. From what I have read, there doesn't appear to be any answers to the problems that we have all been having.

I hear what you are saying sir,but it is a sod for those unfortunate subscribers who are feeling short changed by what has happened to them, myself included. It would be nice if all the hype on TV was correct, but sadly the reality for some of us is quite a different matter. Why does it seem so damned difficult to honour the statements made by the PO,for ALL of us. Statistics of course can be made to say anything one wants to say but they go nowhere near solving todays problems that still exist for the 1,342 of us.I for one am no nearer getting my e,mail problems sorted. Ok I know it,s easy to set up with Windows Hotmail, which I have done, but surely that,s not the point. Does anyone else have a view on this subject, I hope so. Cheers to all Benji

Well, having signed up for po broadband/phone package i got very worried when i found this forum after signing up...lots of unhappy people. i was concerned that i would not have any email or be able to use my existing equipment. i read through the forum comments and from it was able to use the info to set up IE with the po account - no real problem . also using info from this forum i was able to set my own wireless modem router.(i dont pay for the more expensive wifi package version). all the information is contained in the netgear modem. im no IT expert but if you can program your own modem its possible.
also my account went live exactly on time, 8th april.
i have not used the helpline so wouldnt know how good or bad it is....but probably better than Vmedia.
so far so good . much faster than Vmedia basic package for effectively the same price.

With Homephone from 11th December & Broadband Extra from 28th Jan...yet to receive a bill and have never been able to access account information. E-mail a problem from the very beginning & advised by Post Office to use Googlemail or similar.

Technical support people very good and one fella by the name of Tim...excellent as he phoned back within minutes with good advice. As for customer services biggest problem is the billing/account side. Have contacted them several times asking when they are taking payment and they seem genuinely unable to answer. This is a worry as like most people I have to budget.

I will almost certainly change to another ISP at the end of the 12 month contract, but past experience has indicated that many ISPs are no better than the Post Office and in some cases far worse.

However, in conclusion, if you do work for Post Office Broadband and in technical support, please accept my thanks for being friendly, polite, interested and helpful.

Tried to purchase PO phone and broadband. Waited all day on 19th May for connection. No-one came, no-one called! Called them on the 20th to be told the order was "in error", then we had "someone" cancelled your order, you now need to re-order and wait 7 to 10 days (I need a new phone line you see).

So, I went back to my old ISP (PlusNet) on the "better the devil you know" basis. I emailed the PO to wish them farewell and subsequently received a reply to say they could have "fast-tracked" the order given the circumstances.

Well, my view is that the PO should stick to selling stamps and leave telecoms to the "professionals".

erm - further to my post above someone might find this useful

essentially it appears that there are two passwords - the one you get when you sign up and another embedded in the router.

to find out what these are for particular account, logon to the postoffice website using your username and original password supplied when you received your welcome pack.

    The website says:-

"When setting up your third party equipment you will also be asked for a PPP login and password, this can be found by clicking on the My equipment listed under My account in the menu on the left.

The other parameters that may need to be set are as follows:
    VPI: Set to 0
    VCI: Set to 38
    Line protocol: Set to PPPoA"

the login is in the format XXXXX.postoffice@mypostoffice.com rather than XXXXX@mypostoffice.co.uk

i haven't tried the above yet, but i have a feeling it may well work!

what a palaver! there could be a lucrative side income for someone in these recessionary times setting up routers for mad old people who are insane enough to sign up for this lousy broadband. gggrrr!!!

by just another isp at 17:50 on 14 Jun 2008Report abuse

Well I've been with PO for couple months now...no problems.
For Nick and others who want to know how to convert from the PO provided equipment you need the USERNAME and PASSWORD from the PO router. These are different to the PROVIDED names.
First backup the PO router using the router utilities. Again, you have to log into the router using the info on the router base.
Once backed up to a suitable location open the XML file using notepad or wordpad. Its just a text file. Carefully identify the first mention of username and password. These are written in hexidecimal (base 16 numbering), copy and paste the the hex names contained between the quote marks into a notepad file.
Each two hex characters represents a normal letter. Type a space after each pair of hex characters to spread it out.
The last 28 pairs of hex characters represent
    .postoffice@mypostoffice.com (28 letters and symbols)
    Are you following?????
Now the hard bit. Using simple code cracking tecniques you have to decode the hex. I dont know if all routers use the same coding but as the username is so long we can work out many letters. Write down the alphabet. Take the letter "o" its repeated 5 times above. In my router its represented by the hex characters 90. f is represented by 99 etc etc. Therefore you can work out the whole alphabet. As the alphabet goes up hex is counting down. a is 9E, b is 9D, c is 9C. Google hex to find out more.
Eventually you will have the alphabet in hex code.
Just decode the password and bobs your uncle. Did you get that????
User name is based loosly on you login name. Password is different. Use the same settings contained in the PO router.
Feed all into your own WIFI router and hey presto.
Sorry PO but its just not fair to keep these things secret.
Use the OE info supplied by LEN jan 14th in this forum to save using the PO webmail. You still maintain the PO email address but use OE instead. It works.
    Best of Luck.

    Hi guys
btw Im not Len but his method seems to work with my OE in XP.
In OE "accounts", I guess youve set up a post office account using the add mail account wizard from tools> accounts in OE. On the servers page you should have:-
Incoming mail server is a "POP3" server
    Incoming mail is "pop3.mypostoffice.co.uk"
    Outgoing mail is "81.140.160.148"

    Account name will be "*******@mypostoffice.co.uk"
Use your PO web login password.
NO need to tick the other boxes.
Nothing needs to be changed on the other pages.
Make sure you set this account as default. Also when sending the email make sure you send it FROM the PO account you set up. Its on a pull down menu if you have several email accounts.
Ive got a feeling I had to send an email to myself to get it working though...easier as I pick up several email accounts which also work fine through PO and OE.
You can only send emails from the PO account you set up.
    It really does work.

Jake, the information I have received from the PO regarding billing is. I quote,'OFCOM are the Telecom regulators, in the event of a customer remaining unbilled for an extended period of time, the service provider will only bill for the following. 3 months of line rental in arrears, 3 months line rental in advance. 6 months calls in arrears, 6 months call features in arrears.
Customer will be given an aditional period in which to pay and we will discuss any needs with you when the bill does arrive. wWe do not expect you to pay immediately if you cannot. When the bill does arrive, you should call our Credit Management Team to discuss a payment plan with them.' Unquote. It would seem there are loads like us out there. Response to Lewis. Far be it from me to defend the Post Office (it leaves a bitter taste after all their inefficiencies!) but your problems of 1.1mbps speed may not be of their doing. I'm close to an exchange and I've been getting 5mbps since going with them. Numerous people have told me that the distance from the exchange, and the quality of BT connections are the key factors. A colleague of mine living in a Beds. village is with Tiscali and he's only getting 500K, despite paying for 8M. Have a word with your local BT people and see what they say.

I'm an eternal optomist, and I'm going to stick with PO for the time being on the grounds that they surely can't go on being so hopeless. We'll see!

What's going on with PO is so puzzling, in that their problems seem inconsistent. If they had fundamental system errors then it'd be the same for all of us, but clearly it isn't. Basically, I'm getting a good, fast and reliable broadband service, and my bills have arrived so far on time - all in proper detail, but I'm unable to access any on-line billing services, and my requests for this to be looked into are simply not acted upon - I guess that they are as frustrated as we are.

I am also an unhappy Post Office HomePhone with Broadband Extra customer and I am trying to get my contract cancelled due to the fact that I am not getting the service I signed up for. On the email issue it is worth noting that clause 28.2 of the Post Office terms and conditions state “Both (broadband) packages include the use of 5 email addresses .... It does not state that the email service is free. Through frustration at the lack of progress I have contacted OTELO and BBC Watchdog in the hope that at the very least others can be warned of the Post Office broadband problems – perhaps others may wish to do the same.

My friend is on PO with standard wired router. He has been told by PO they will not upgrade his contract to wireless, even if he pays the difference. Why not?

Anyhow, he was told by PO support to go to PC World, get a NetGear wireless router and adapter and it will all work as it currently does, but wirelessly.

Are we being naive to believe this will be as easy as they say, swapping over to the new router and wireless adapter? I know we will have to setup the wireless key and adapter software on the PC but do not understand how the router installation is transparent to the end-user, i.e. no installation CD required???

Not only are post office Broadband performing well above industry average for all Broadband providers in the UK. But now from the 8th of September the prices for the packages are going down. BB standard and BB extra will both go down £1. Homephone and BB standard is going down £3 and Homephone and BB extra is going down £2. Obvioulsy as some customers know there has been problems with the email service. Alot of these problems now seem to be ironed out and regular maintence is being carried out on the email servers (these messages are on the mypostoffice website when you log in to inform you of the maintence). The majority of the complaints that are made on this blog are relating to email and I find it hilarious that nobody will acknowledge that there broadband is working fine (or you wouldn't be on this website) but would rather rant about emails when they can subscribe to any of the free email services out there (yahoo, hotmail, gmail etc.)

Thanks to the PO for their contribution on Aug 25th. I'm disappointed in the response, in that comments I have made HAVE been positive, but I've pointed out difficulties in the on-line admin side of things, which I have to say are still unresolved despite calls and emails. Of course there are always going to be people who go 'over the top' and expect the earth, but I don't think it unreasonable for a company with the clout of The Post Office to either deliver what they promised, or to give good reason why they haven't. It is too easy for any service provider to blame unreasonable customers, when clearly there are many reasonable customers with valid greivance, albeit minor. How about clearing the air with a general apology for the difficulties and an invitation to customers to be helped in resolving outstanding issues? I appreciate the reduction in costs, that sounds very welcome, but come on PO, be user friendly.

    In response to Alan's comment.
After reading previous comments I have seen that you have stated on numerous times that you are pleased with the broadband aspect of the package which I am delighted to hear. As previoulsy stated (and as customers know) there is issues with the email service. If the issue is with your online billing, generally this is one of the easiest issues to resolve. I would advise you the contact technical support and they can raise this so your account will link with your billing account. If you have already done so then I would advise you unfortuantely just to sit tight until they can link your account. If you are having any other issue, I would be more then happy to try and offer some sort of resolution.

I joined the Post Office's home phone and broadband extra package back in December last year. There was some initial teething problems with billing and I was told that I was unable to pay via Direct Debit so I am currently being billed quarterly and able to pay by cheque. I have been sent three red letter billings over the course of connection saying that I have not paid for the services which I had. On each occasion the PO response was that it was a computer error. On thursday 28th August my broadband went down and was fixed on the following morning after lots of phone calls (a few hours on the phone). This afternoon, 31st August, again no connection and managed to get the problem sorted after 2 hours of technical help. The problem each time lies with the PO server rejecting my account. No explanation but the guys on the other end were mostly helpful when I could understand the overseas dialect. Before this connection problem I had no broadband issues and was very happy with the service. I hope this is not a regular problem and has anyone else experienced recent disconnection from their broadband?

In Response to Clare W 31st August 2008.I took out PO broad band in Nov 2007 with a similar problem as you had with disconnection and not getting onto the internet, and problems with my email system, but things at the moment seem to be working ok.but as far as paying via direct debit that was also ok,they did tell me that they prefer that method of payment.I should get back to them and see if you can get it changed.Hope it works out for you.

    Hi all.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned but just quickly scanned the rest of the messages. Im currently having problems with my tinternet. Went live on 19th august while i was on my jollies when i got back at end of august plugged in router etc and hey presto good internet connection. Next day however nada, not a thing. Phoned tech support and a cease has been put on my line. No one can explain why, no one seems to have an order to cease the broadband and i certainly didnt ask for a cancellation. Phoned tech support back, theres no cease on the line...we'll do some diagnostics so phoned them back when got in from work. Cant do diagnostics cos theres a cease on your line! Guy said he would re-order broadband, should be active in 48 hrs....nothing. Phone up tech support, theres a cease on your line. Ill re-activate it, could take five days........and now im waiting. Not holding my breath.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Can't praise PO enough. ~Couple of teething troubles i.e. Password (theirs!!) failed and couldn't access e-mail. Both faults reported using their e-nail address. Even had the courtesy to ask afterwards if their Broadbans Assistance had worked. The answer, "Yes".. All done on the net, no need for 'phone calls, no need for letter writing. My verdict - 5 star

Hi its me again, I finally got sorted, I did contact OFTEL they informed me that the PO were having billing problems ,as if I didnt know. They asked me to give them a few more days which I did and bingo I received a bill after 8 months, as it is their fault they can only back charge a certain way so I reckon I saved about £100. I still think the PO is crap, but until my 12 months is up I am stuck with it. Hope you all get sorted amicably. Signing out Brian R

i work in the tech support and i agree with most peoples broadband does not go live on time its the provisionings fault.
even if you have dropped connection of what ever fault you may have its down to the cmt (case management team) NOT TECH SUPPORT.
tech support only help with getting your connection and your connection is there but 80% of the time its the customers pc.
heres a hint if you want your bb speed to increase just put your bb line into the test socket which is located behind ur master socket which is mainly in your hall and leave it there for 3 days which will give you ur max stable rate.
tech support unlock ur account and can give you a password reset which you can use straight away but you wont be able to read your mail till 30 mins (30 min error message).
the postoffice are currently trying to make ur e-mail account online even better.
if you dont like using th postofice portal you can use outlook express and we will help you and kindly guide you through it.
if you have a dropping connection or no sync but ur modem or wireless router into the main socket in the hall and we will work from there.
it will save you and all tech support agents time.
remember we are getting busier because the amount of people joining our great service.
im always getting calls saying my broadband is not working, its mostly the customers pc or firewall.
if it comes up on our systems that your getting a braodband service down your line and we cant get it fixed, its entirely up to you to fix or bring it to ur local pc engineer.
people just want to cancel because we cant get it fixed for you and most people agree it is the pc but id say 89% of people says its not.
heres another one to try before ringing us go into safe mode how to do that all ya have to do is when your computer is coming on keep pressing f8 and pick save mode with networking and see if ya can get web page if ya can then its not the postoffice bb not working its ur pc.
just one last thing to say the incoming mail server is all lower case pop3.mypostoffice.co.uk and outgoing server is smtp.mypostoffice.co.uk and just remember the account name is ur full e-mail address not just the first part of ur e-mail address.
i'll be back again to give yous more information.
    thanks for your time.

Worst Customer Service I have ever encountered:
I just moved to the UK from the US, and I was told by a friend that I should book a phone/broadband service appointment at least 2 weeks in advance. I did this, and had a date lined up for service to be installed at my new flat. To my mind, when you get given an installation date, it is pretty much set (unless the vendor calls you in an apologetic manner indicating unusual circumstances have occurred).

Well, I moved over last week, and I figured I'd call to follow up, just to make sure we were still on for the installation date, nobody could answer my question. I was told to leave my contact details and someone would call me back - nobody did. I tried several times later that day, and received the same non-answers. I assumed that all was well, since nobody had called to indicate otherwise but figured I'd try again, just in case.

Got through today, and was told that my installation date has been pushed back indefinitely because they had been unable to contact me. Needless to say, I insisted on speaking to a supervisor, and just got a load of nonsense from them.

At great inconvenience to me, I had to cancel my service with them in disgust. If the company is this bad on the front end, I can't imagine how dreadful their post-sales team is.

Avoid this bunch of amateurs like the plague...

In order to connect using my own (existing) router, I had to do the following:

    username: FIRSTNAME.LASTNAME.postoffice@mypostoffice.com

password: This is a bit more tricky. You'll have to plug in their router, then connect to it. The essid and passphrase are written on the underside of the netgear router they supply. Next, browse to the router (probably http://192.168.0.1/ with a username/password of "admin"/"password") and finally, download the configuration from the router. Look inside the configuration file that is downloaded and you'll see the username above, with a plaintext password on the next line.

    Good luck!

by Diane C at 16:44 on 16 Apr 2009Report abuse

I too have had the same problems as many of you lot. I signed up in Jan 08 and despite numerous phone calls and a second modem, I did not receive a broadband conection until May 08. As others have said, the people on the helpline are polite and appear helpful but after you have put the phone down you are forgotten and there is never any record of you phoning (although AMAZINGLY ((!)) there's always a record on your bill). So in May 08, the connection suddenly began to work and after ringing up several times I received a credit on my account (I had been paying for broadband throughout as well as having to pay to dial-up when I needed to go online). Ever since then the connection has been fine. In Feb 09 I received a letter stating that I would no longer receive a paper bill but an electronic one. I immediately emailed them (could not bear to use the helpline anymore) to ask details of where the email would be sent as, like many of you, I had never had access to the PO email account promised. After to-ing and fro-ing they said the had no email address on their system for me (!) and would update their records with the address I gave them. Since then I have had no bills, paper or otherwise and they helped themselves to money from my bank account in March. I emailed again and they told me when my NEXT bill would be due, totally ignoring the fact that they had taken my money without prior notification - BREACH OF CONTRACT, PEOPLE! So I cancelled my direct debit. Today I have received a letter thanking me for requesting change of payment method!? Apparently I can pay my next bill at the Post Office or by cheque in the post. Er, thanks, lets hope I get a bill... Now I have written a letter to air my grievances but where do I send it? Having read comments all over the internet, apparently it's pointless sending anything to the Newcastle address because they don't respond. Any idea anyone?

However its probably the slowest conection I have ever had (and Tiscali were bad enough) and I only live a mile away from the exchange on the same road. I intend on waiting a while to see if anything changes, if not I will be calling them everyday, its free to call 0845 numbers in the evening, so that will be when I will be making my complaint.

I had Mypostoffice phone and Broadband on the 21st May. It took 2 days to get the Broadband connection up and running with excuses as to the Router needed a firmware upgrade to them finally addmitting that it was their server problem.

Since then I have made about 15 calls to try to get my email to work. THere seems to be a problem with the pop3 setup at their end not working but they don bot seem to be doing much to rectify this problem.

In addition to this, mosy of my account information when I login cannot be accessed. I cant view any of my phone information or email.

WHen I phone I am told that this is a generic problem with many people having the same issues. So far I have waited from the 21st May to todays date of the 11th June and email and account access still arnt working.

If I ask to speak to anyone senior about this problem I am told that no one is available. Only once have I been in touch with a Supervisor who said that I would be put onto a priority list to get this problem fixed. But. still to no avail.

martinamor, I think that you will find that the POP3 setup will never work their end, having read the comments on this page, others have been told that it is not provided. For the last 18 months since starting with PO Broadband and Homephone I have only been able to access my email via my providers (Orange) web access page. Also, since the PO stopped paper billing in February this year I have not had a bill and cannot access my PO email account either. I did exchange several emails with them at the time but to no avail so I cancelled my DD and am still waiting for them to catch up. I am led to believe they can only retrospectively bill you for 6 months so I am now sitting back and waiting for my free period to start!
The people in the call centre are just contractors, I think they also take calls for Next and other companies so don't expect too much help from them (took me 4 months from the go-live date to get Broadband switched on).
Finally, if you do get your problems sorted would you minding posting another message to let us know? Thanks!

Quite agree Mick. It is such a shame that for such a good potential phone and broadband service they cant provide the goods. I dont see what their problem is to get things right. If they as an organisation take on the responsibility in providing a quality service then they should have the resources to put the system into proper action.

Its not that it doesnt work for everyone. Some of my friends who had the service last year are using all of the facilities, can access their account properly and receive and send emails using pop3 and smtp info. I must have phoned up the Post office about 22 times now and still nothing working in terms of my account access and email useage.

I believe they rent a server from BT. the server name is http://polwebmail.broadbandscope.com which deals with email and pop3 issues and general account phone and broadband information. My guess is that when things go wrong they are not able to directly put things right but are in the hands of the third party. Rather like Tom telling Dick who tells Harry, then responds back to tell Dick who then tells Tom. By that time they have lost the plot This line of communication is full of warts and I think that some serious management reorganisation is needed to deal with this.

I note that yet again today there is a message after login into the Mypostoffice account saying Message Of the Day: "Please be aware essential maintenance work is currently being carried out on the our e-mail/webspace servers which is due to complete shortly."

Initially they were giving specific times when the maintenance would be done but now this "Due to be completed shortly" message has been on for a few days now. It now appears that if you phone up for technical help a prerecorded message comments that exceptional technical difficulties are being experienced at the moment and there are higher call volumes at present due to this. So in effect I just have to sit back waiting.....well untill monday morning that is!!!

Setting up my folks for broadband should have been a case of plug n play, and for internet access it was the case. But email was, and still is impossible. I can send, but can't receive – and from reading the above, it seems this is a known server issue that dates back at least a year.

It is galling that Mypostoffice customer support is aware of this, but not willing to share information or provide a credible solution.

I went live with PO Broadband Extra on 16th July 09. I am a postie so get it all for £20 - bargain.

I left Orange (the futures bright) cos they wanted to put me up to 8Mb and increase my monthly bill and then said I was using too much so after 10 years I voted with my feet.

Setting up PO was a doddle and took less than 10 mins.

E-mail is rubbish and erratic. I have had trouble getting mails online and also in my Outlook 2007 (ex PC engineer so aint me or my poota. Orange mail was spot on)

I wrote to PO and got a "ticket number" But that's all. I sent another letter and got another "ticket number" That's all.

In frustration I then sent 20 e-mails to Tech Support, 20 e-mails to Customer Service and 20 e-mails to sales all asking: can I have an answer to my question please or I will leave at the end of my 12-month contract! All I want is the e-amil to work.

I got another e-mail response with a "Ticket Number" and this time got a reply. They had server probs blah de blah. I gave up and set up a Google mail account (free) and have that directed to my Outlook. Works 100%. I don't use post office mail at all.

I have just had my first bill, online. It does not show itemised so what are they charging me for? I wrote again and got ................yes a "ticket number" So far still waiting for a reply as to if I will ever get an itemised bill.

The old saying “you get what you pay for” applies here me thinks.

I shall vote with my feet next June and PO will lose another customer. Broadband is good but thats all I can say. I am getting 6-7Mb ish every day.

Vote with your feet - they won't like it up 'em Mr Mainwaring!

    HI David,

I use a netgear router, mnost settings can be left as the default, so as long as your IP address is set to DHCP (obtain automatically) and you've entered your user name and password it should work fine.

Oh how people love to complain. I have had an OUTSTANDING experience with PO Broadband. Customer support staff are lovely, very helpful and I dread to think how some customers treat these very friendly people!

Would recommend this service to anyone - cheap, local, brilliant. Sure they may have a few glitches but they're the best ISP I've ever had. Thanks

I moved to Post Office broadband a couple of weeks ago. (I moved from orange as they suddenly increased their charge from £12 to £20 per month)
I've had no difficulty with connection via the standard modem and although the speed is less than it was with orange it is adequate for my needs.
BIG problems though with email which is eratic, sometimes ok, sometimes not receiving mail but more importantly is the webspace and lack of response from the 'help' contact.
I am renaming the P.O. as the POO web service provider.
Their webspace uploading pages is useless. I have uploaded (successfully according to the confirmation message) several pages with html extensions but when I check my site via an ftp program I find that the previously uploaded files are there in name but have ZERO file size.
Uploading via an ftp program is without problem.
The uploaded pages CANNOT be viewed using the URL the POO provide you with. An additional /index.html is required.
Even with this sorted there are problems with their server. Sometimes the page appears in the browser sometimes there is an error message of 'Not Found'. Repeatedly clicking 'Reload' will eventually bring the page up. The same thing happens with the other pages and images that I have uploaded.
I have used their 'contact' email address but have had no replies.
If this doesn't get resolved very soon I may pursue the matter as THEIR breach of contract and leave them within the next few weeks.

Just a warning - make sure you check your bill - I couldn't figure out why my account was in the red and when I got my statement I realised my bill payment was taken twice by Post Office Home Phone & Broadband.

Ordered Home phone and Broadband extra on 8th November and a chance call to them showed the order had been cancelled so did it again. Was given 3rd December as going Live date. BT put line in as promised but no broadband. It had been cancelled again. Re-ordered and would get it midnight 3rd. On the 4th still no broadband. Cancelled again. Someone would call back (they didnt) giving an explanation I so called again. 47mins waiting in queue. They said they could fast trak the order in 5 working days. Saturday 5th and I call to just check it out (25 mins to get through). Guess what? The order has been cancelled again and can't re-order until Monday where it will be 5 working days again! I am disgusted with the service already.

Nadine - I am not defending anyone if your post has been altered BUT having read it, I don't think it makes the PO look good at all!

I have had PO Homephone and Broadband since its inception.
I live in a rural area and only get 2Mbps. I find this fast enough for home use.
I would recommend this package to anyone.
Good value, free calls package and anti virus protection.
Great security especially for keeping an eye on what children are logging on to and who they are talking to.

Definately better value than BT and many others.
You know who you are dealing with when using a name like The Post Office.

Having just got off the phone for the umpteenth time since Sept 2009 I have finally lost patience with th PO.. I changed address in September 2009 and since then I have received bills addressed in the wrong name to the wrong address or in the wrong name to the right address but all with my phone number on them. Never any with the right name. All the customer numbers where different too and on more than one occasion I was told that they couldnt discuss the account with me as it wasnt my name on the account!! I kept getting bills for final reminders but hadnt recieved a normal bill on those occasions.I had been told to ignore the final demands as they were having trouble with their system and I was up to date. To cut a long story short I have today paid a bill to a very rude female in the revenue department (still in the wrong name) for nearly £100.She insists that they have sent a revised bill in the correct name but I havent received it! I must have easily spent half that much in phone calls trying to sort out the mess since last September and they offered me a reduction of £5 as a good will gesture as I am in arrears now thru not fault of my own!! It seems I cant go to another provider as changing addresses means that I started a new 12month contract when I moved (something else that wasnt mentioned) despite the fact that I have been with them since June 2008!! I will be changing in 3months tho. If Im stuck in 12month contract, Why was nothing mentioned when I moved 6months after taking out the original contract? Surely that would have been a breach of contract on my part then? Take heed do not use this company unless u want to go prematurely grey, have a huge phone bill and then be verbally abused by their staff! The speed and connection etc are all fine I just hate banging my head against a brick wall once a fortnight for 9 months!

Post office broadband is RUBBISH Their atitudes suck and also the customer service is acctualy none at all, It's more like something you would expect from bt not post office, I for months had no bills and they seem to careless, once i did recive the bill i payed it and now once again nearly a year later i am not reciving bills again allthough they addmitted it was their fault last time, they seem not to care and just cut off your services when they like, my broadband has not worked for months now and they don't careless they seem to think it's a joke and just want your money, when i ran a speed test to try my connection i had less than 400 kbps ( not at peak time) and what i did notice is at speedtest.net was that the isp name was not post office but acctualy british telecom Are they trading under a diffrent name now just to treat people like rubbish as sometimes british telecom do or is the post office owned by british telecom am not sure?

A couple of years ago now (probably, can't quite remember) PO wrote to me telling me they were stopping paper billing and changing to online billing (I paid monthly direct debit). I was OK with this until they took the money from my bank acount without billing me first (have posted previously about that). After several phone calls to customer services and a second occurence of raiding my bank account without sending a bill first I cancelled the direct debit. I didn't get a bill for 6 months. They then got their act together and emailled me a bill covering the 6 months. I paid this and ever since they have been emailling the bill quarterly and I have been paying it at my local PO (with the red reminder that comes through the post cos the online bill cannot be paid at the PO due to the missing bar code or giro slip it's supposed to have). After I paid the last one I rang them and asked them to put me back on monthly DD now that their online billing seems to be working OK. They said OK fine and I have been awaiting the email telling me that my bill can be viewed online. Lo and behold a paper bill arrived through my letterbox!!!!! It is MONTHLY. It is DIRECT DEBIT. It is PAPER which they told me was no longer possible. WHAT'S THAT ABOUT? Don't get me wrong, it's fine by me but why after all the aggro and not sending a bill for 6 months, WHY WHY WHY?! Why didn't they just leave it like that in the first place?
Apart from the billing the broadband service has been fine, (apart from 2 months no service when I started, covered in previous posts), I can think of only 2 occasions when I have had no broadband. Such a shame their billing system is not up to the same standard.

they turned the phone off 2 days after we put the cancel in .nice of em .
just stay away from them utter rubbish they took to many customers on and cant cope.
even signed us up for a new contract without telling us when we switched from bt phone to po phone..which is illegal .

The reason this company has gone into freefall is because they are not increasing (buying more from BT) their bandwidth allocation. Therefore the more subscribers per exchange means less to go round. Bunch of unorganised amauters
