Free Freeview box and two months’ Setanta Sports with TalkTalk

TalkTalk is offering customers that sign up to its broadband service during August a free Freeview box and two months’ subscription to Setanta Sports.

But check the smallprint and you’ll find you’re tying yourself into not just an 18-month broadband deal, but 18-months of Setanta Sports as well which costs £9.99/month after the two free months.

Setanta owns the rights to 46 Premiership matches - Sky owns the rest.

Customers can also get Setanta through Sky, Virgin Media or BT Vision, the latter offers a pay per view service as well as a subscription.

So is it worth signing up to TalkTalk and Setanta for 18 months just to get a free Freeview box and £19.98 worth of sports?

As with Orange Broadband’s free laptop promotion this is another offer that, under closer scrutiny, is not all it’s cracked up to be. A normal Setanta contract is £9.99 per month which isn’t bad when you’re getting 4or5 premiership games every month. BUT when the football season’s finished you will be paying a tenner a month for very little

I would say IMO it is not worth signing up to this deal

if you visit the talk talk website there is now no minimum period for this offer.

so you get free box plus 2 month setanta, all you need is 30 days notice to cancel at the end of the season….i just bagged one for myself, it came in the post yesterday morning and took about 20 minutes to get going

My husband signed up to this deal in September. We were never able to activate the viewing card to watch setanta sport because when calling the number given, there was never any answer (at any time, morn. or evening). You have to call number to activate card with a pin code type no. that you recieve. When calling setanta customer service they kept saying they were unable to help as we did not have a paid subscription and we had to call the number given. Spoke to several people and explained situation.

After a week or so, we gave up and forgot about setanta, as it seemed like too much hassle. Just got a bank statement and saw that setanta have taken directdebit! Phoned to explain and was put through to ‘cancellations’, waited for 10 mins and no-one answered so have decided to try writing to them to cancel instead.

I would say that this is not a good deal.

dont do it. no one will help you afterwards. no one will answer your calls. you cant cancel that easy. box is cheap and goes wrong a lot. been trying to cancel for a week now. just got through after 28mins today. at your own peril.

I have subscribed for Setanta sports one month back. I am yet unable to activate my channel.

On calling them I am adviced to visit the website when I try to activate on the website this does not permit me and ask me to call a number which never answer.

I did check my bank account and find that my account has been debited with the monthly charge of £9.99 even without activating me.

I find this to be a big scame. Who permits this sort of frauds to operate??

How on earth could they take money off my account without providing the service in the first instance.
If I ma sent in cycles from website to telephone without been able to approch them is this not a fraud.

I plan to take this up with offcome and other regulaters to see if there would be any response.

Anyone of you thinking to have Setanta , please, please don’t since this is a big scame.

I signed up for Setanta sports last September through Talktalk recieved veiwing card in two days but the box took nearly four weeks to come, so we had more or less already lost a “free month”, after we got the box had problems activating the card tried phoning customers services many times, evenually after a few days got to speak to a rep. finally we got it going but we still get transmission problems now, we seem to spend more time taking the card out putting it back in turning power on and off. The final straw came last night Liverpool v Aston Villa sat down to watch it well you know the rest “not working again” tried to phone customer services, after listening to countless menu options was told by a voice message lines are too busy phone back later then the line was cut off, so I went to my bank today and cancelled my direct debit (its probably pointless trying to phone) we’ve had enough!!
