T-Mobile Web 'n' Walk USB modem

T-Mobile Web 'n' Walk USBWith mobile phone operators offering HSDPA data access on their 3G networks, it’s easy to get broadband-like download speeds on your laptop in most UK cities. You’ll need an HSDPA modem and the T-Mobile Web ‘n’ Walk USB is one for laptops that lack a PC Card slot.

It’s essentially the same as the Web ‘n’ Walk PC Card, but lacks Wi-Fi. It’s small, light and feels very durable, so there should be no problem with it bouncing around the bottom of a laptop bag.

Getting the modem up and running is simple. The drivers are stored on flash storage on the device itself and install as soon as you plug the modem in. The Web ‘n’ Walk USB Manager utility shows network signal strength, along with an upload/download speed chart and daily, monthly and yearly bandwidth use.

The Web ‘n’ Walk tariff is subject to a fair-use policy that limits mobile data use to 3Gb a month, so this is a handy tracking tool. Web ‘b’ Walk is by far the best-value mobile data tariff available, though the £29-a-month package prohibits VoIP and you’ll need to be on the £44-a-month tariff if you want to use Skype and its ilk.

In theory, the HSDPA network supports download speeds of up to 1.8Mbit/s, but our figures hovered around the 400Kbit/s mark and only occasionally peaked at around 1Mbit/s — about par for the course. The USB modem didn’t give quite the same smooth connection as the Web ‘n’ Walk PC Card modem, though, and both websites and downloads seem subject to more timeouts and wildly varying download speeds than we’d expect.

So, if you need 3G data access on your laptop, the Web ‘n’ Walk USB will certainly suffice, but we’d strongly recommend opting for the PC Card option if your laptop has a suitable slot.

Update: We've written a guide on how to get an XBox 360 online with a 3G modem, so the comments thread on that article is the best place to get your games console connectivity questions answered.

The Huawei usb modem works very well and gives truely awesome 3.6Mb connection speeds. I moved from T-Mobile to 3 who offer 3Gb a month for £15 and a truely unlimited use of the internet... MSN, Skype - all no problem! Check the small print before you sign up with T-Mobile.

I've used web&walk for 3 months now, frusterating with rapidshare and megadownloads and such saying I've already downloaded files and had to wait hours before next download. In fact, i've never downloaded anything yet. Download always breaks up, and i still have to pay the Kb i've downloaded. shits.

To all that have asked...We don't cover games consoles and I don't have an Xbox 360 to hand to try it with, but I'm pretty sure that you won't be able to use a USB 3G modem like this with an Xbox. The modem installs the appropriate drivers on a PC when it's connected and this won't happen on an Xbox. If 3G is the only broadband option available to you, you'll need to use a 3G router -- it has its own 3G modem and your devices that connect to that, either by a cable or wirelessly. There are various models available, but you need to check which mobile operators are supported -- like mobile phones, some 3G routers are locked to one operator. Here's one from Dabs.com -- http://tinyurl.com/3x5jcc -- but others are available. Hope that helps.-Julian

I have a t-mobile 3g webn walk, I hooked it up to the pc no problems, in my area I get 3.6mb connection and once it was running I set up ICS (internet connection sharing) on the pc, then the Xbox was able to connect to the pc, I had to open ports 88 and 3074 (TCP and UDP) on the firewall but it works.the issue is from teh NAT, when using this system so far as I can tell (and I invested considerable amount of time with all configurations) you cant get a totally open nat which means the xbox always see's you as "strict" so you will not be able to connect to users who dont have "open" nat on their home networks which is a pain!not ideal for xbox but it does work... to set it up do the following:1) set up on pc as normal2) go to control panel, network connections, and right click on the internet connection titles t-mobile (when you have it connected)3) select properties4) select the tab "sharing"5) tick the tick box "allow other computers on the network to use this connection.6) tick the bottom tick box to allow other devices to control the connection. (this will enable UpNP)7) press ok and accept that the pc will have the network card set to 192.168.0.18) go to the network settings in teh xbox and set its ip to something in that range...like 192.168.0.99, set the subnet to 255.255.255.0 and the gateway to 192.168.0.19) again in the xbox settings you can try to leave the dns to automatic... if this fails set it to 192.168.0.1 if this also fails (at the dns point in the xbox live test) set it to the dns servers for t-mobile which are...Primary: 149.254.201.126Seconary: 149.254.192.126which will allow the xbox to go straight out (I only needed to do this when trying it on my vista machine)that should do it... run the xbox live test and you should pass all tests as confirmed except NAT which will give strict, you can then use Xbox live but may have problems talking or partying up with some people... will take some time to find games sometimes too...

talking about t-mobile web n walk. what can I do to get my smtp server to send emails. The error I am getting is:An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Publicasting Digital Media', Server: 'mail.publicasting.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 IP address 149.254.192.195 in XBL', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC69I guessed the IP 149.254.192.195wouldve been listed in the spam blacklist. It was indeed blocked www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=149.254.192.195The ISP being t-mobile I guess needs to sort out the blockout - but does anyone know a way around this? many thanks

Hi all, I have recently brought the web n walk package and found it very good. It says I get connection speeds of 7.2Mps, not sure if thats totally true?Anyway, in order to access the blocked websites such as Youtube etc all you need to do is register your account on the T-Mobile website and remove the filter. Simple. No credit card or £2 needed.

Hi people,I notice lots of you have an xbox 360 and would like to connect to xbox live using web n walk. The way i'm going to try connecting to xbox live, is by using a 'LG Viewty' phone, which has the 5-day pass web n walk feature which will be plugged into my computer enabling the internet on my laptop. Then i will enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) so i can connect my xbox to my laptop using a 'Crossover cable or Ethernet Cable'.I shall experiment tomorrow so i look forward to telling you if i'm successful.

I did the test and got no NAT error! thanks again
