LG GSA-E50N external DVD writer

LG GSA-E50NIf your laptop doesn’t have an internal DVD writer, you don’t need to spend a fortune on an external model. LG’s GSA-E50N supports every disc format going and is one of the cheapest portable DVD writers we’ve seen.

Like most DVD writers, the E50N couldn’t match its stated write speeds, but it was still faster than many other portable DVD writers in all our performance tests. It took around 11 minutes to write a 4.7Gb DVD, approximately 28 minutes to burn an 8.5Gb DVD and around 13 minutes to fill a rewritable DVD.Best of all, the E50N has no trouble powering itself over a computer’s USB ports using the included USB cables.

Usefully, the E50N can password protect discs if written using Ahead’s Nero burning software. Files on such discs are still visible in Windows Explorer, but can’t be opened without entering your password into a downloadable unlocking utility.

Although it isn’t flawless, the LG GSA-E50N is a speedy, good-looking and inexpensive portable DVD writer.
