Connect to Xbox Live with a USB 3G modem
Judging by the number of emails we receive asking how to do it, lots of people are trying – and failing – to get their Xbox 360 games console online via a 3G modem. It should be straightforward, but it seems that Xbox Live doesn’t always work as expected over a mobile broadband connection – which is a problem if that’s the only internet connection you have access to.
The good news is that it is relatively straightforward to get an Xbox 360 online using a 3G USB modem. The bad news is that it’s not just a case of plugging a modem directly into the Xbox 360’s USB port – there are no suitable drivers, and no way to install them even if there were. But there is a one way to do it.
If you have a Windows PC, you can connect the Xbox 360 to it with an Ethernet cable and then plug the modem into the PC. Windows Internet Connection Sharing then lets you share the mobile broadband connection with the Xbox 360 – and Xbox Live will work in the usual way. Well, sort of.
NAT matters
The catch is that mobile broadband providers use subtly different settings for their services and the important one is NAT – Network Address Translation. Among other things, NAT governs the ports that are available over your internet connection – essentially holes in the mobile broadband provider’s firewall through which data can pass unimpeded.
Ideally, you should be able to use any port you like, but some providers place tight controls on their mobile broadband NAT, usually for security reasons. When Xbox Live tests an internet connection, it identifies three types of NAT – Open, Moderate and Strict.
The type of NAT deployed by your mobile broadband provider will affect your ability to host and join Xbox Live games, as this table shows:

An Open NAT is obviously the most desirable configuration, but a Strict NAT doesn’t rule out Xbox Live completely – it just means that you won’t be able to play with other people with a Strict NAT, or host games that people with Moderate or Strict NAT settings can join.
Unfortunately, the NAT settings for mobile broadband services are controlled by the provider and there’s no getting around a service with a NAT set to Strict. You can read more about the different types of NAT at the Xbox Live support site.
Vodafone and 3 both use an Open NAT; O2 is Strict – these are the results of the Xbox Live connection tests we ran with each modem. We weren't able to test modems from Orange and T-Mobile, but Orange did confirm that it doesn't block any ports, which means Xbox Live should detect an Open NAT with its mobile broadband service. We're still waiting to hear from T-Mobile though, and we'll post an update as soon as it replies.
Game on..?
Three final points. First, online gaming (particularly first-person shooters) is heavily reliant on a low ping. Too high a ping (measured in milliseconds) and the game will ‘lag’ – there will be a delay in your actions and what you see on-screen.
Our tests of mobile broadband modems show ping scores around the 150ms mark – not the best, but still fine for online gaming. If you think an online game is lagging, you can test your broadband modem’s ping by opening a command prompt window on the PC (Start > Run > cmd) and typing ping www.google.com (or a popular website of your choice) , then pressing Enter. The value after time= is your ping.

Second, online gaming with Xbox Live downloads more data than you might think. In addition to game updates, data is also downloaded as you play – we measured 82Mb after one hour of playing Team Fortress 2. This can be an issue if your tariff has a stingy data allowance and/or high excess use charges, so examine the different mobile broadband deals carefully if you're looking for one just for gaming.
Third, check the T&Cs of the mobile broadband provider you plan to use before signing up to a contract. Some providers explicitly prohibit the use of their mobile broadband service on a local network – and that’s just what Internet Connection Sharing is doing. That said, short of monitoring your internet traffic, there’s no easy way for a provider to detect that you’ve connected a games console to their service, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
So, with that out of the way, let's get started...
Before you begin
The steps for both Windows XP and Windows Vista are broadly similar, but we’ve listed each separately. There are two steps that apply to both operating systems, though:
Step 1
Plug your 3G modem into your PC and establish a connection.
Step 2
Connect your Xbox 360’s Ethernet port to the Ethernet port on your PC – the Ethernet cable that came with the console is ideal for this, but otherwise, just be sure to use an Ethernet patch crossover cable and not a crossover patch cable (typo...). Turn on the console and leave it at the Dashboard.
Set up Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing
Step 1
On the PC, go to Start > Settings > Network Connections and start the Network Setup Wizard to set up Internet Connection Sharing.
Step 2
Click Next and Next again to skip the first two dialog boxes. If you’re using a laptop and don’t use Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi adapter might be shown here – tick the box to Ignore disconnected network hardware. There shouldn’t be any hardware listed here for a desktop PC, unless it has more than one Ethernet port – you can ignore this too, in that case.
Step 3
Click Next and select the top This computer connects directly to the Internet option, then click Next again.
Step 4
Select your USB 3G modem from the list of hardware – it should be obvious which entry to choose. Click Next.
Step 5
Now select the network connection that you want to share your 3G modem’s internet connection with – this should be the Ethernet port or NIC. Click Next.

Step 6
Click Next to leave the remaining options at their defaults, but select Turn off file and printer sharing when prompted. Click Next another two times and Windows will then configure your network accordingly – this may take a minute or two.
Step 7
When the Wizard has finished, select the Just finish the wizard option, then click Next, then Finish. Windows XP is now configured to share the USB 3G modem with the Xbox 360.
Set up Windows Vista Internet Connection Sharing
Step 1
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center, then click Manage Network Connections in the Task pane.
Step 2
Right-click your mobile broadband connection and choose Properties.
Step 3
When the dialog box appears, make sure that your mobile broadband modem is ticker in the Connect using list, then click the Sharing tab.
Step 4
Enable the Allow other network users to connect… option and if it doesn’t appear automatically, select your Ethernet port (this should be listed as Local Area Connection) in the drop-down list below. Click OK
Step 5
You may need to disconnect your mobile broadband modem and re-connect for the settings to take effect.
With the appropriate steps completed for your operating system, it’s time to move onto the Xbox Live settings on the Xbox 360!
Set up Xbox Live

Step 1
On the Xbox 360, open the Dashboard and select System (the far right screen). Then select Network Settings > Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
Step 2
If you’re currently signed into Xbox Live with a profile, you’ll be prompted to sign out. The console will then run through a series of tests for the Ethernet (wired) connection to the PC.
Step 3
If the console passes each test and ends with NAT: Open, that’s all there is to it – press the Y button on the console controller to return to the Xbox Dashboard.
Troubleshooting
If the Xbox 360 fails any of the Xbox Live Connection tests, press the X button on the controller to repeat them. If you still have no luck, disconnect and reconnect your mobile broadband connection on the PC, then re-run repeat the appropriate sequence of steps to set up Internet Connection Sharing – keep all the settings the same.
It’s worth repeating this process a number of times if it doesn’t work – it took us several attempts before the Xbox 360 would establish a connection and complete the tests.
If the console still refuses to establish a connection to the PC, or if the NAT setting result shows ‘Strict’, you may have to reconfigure the firewall settings on your PC.
If you have a third-party firewall installed, try disabling it temporarily and running the Test Xbox LIVE Connection tests again. If this solves the problem, you’ll need to enable the firewall and forward these three ports:
88 (UDP)
3074 (UDP)
3074 (TCP)
Alternatively, you can put the Xbox 360 (via its IP address) in your firewall's DMZ. This means that it won’t be protected by your firewall, but that’s not a problem for a games console.
If you use either port forwarding or the DMZ, you’ll need to know your Xbox 360’s IP address. By default, its IP address is assigned automatically and will change each time it goes online. You need to change this to a static IP address – one that never changes.

On the Xbox 360, open the Dashboard and go to System > Network Settings > Edit Settings (or select Edit Settings from the Test Xbox Live screen). Make a note of the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway.

Press the A button on the controller, then select Manual. You can then select the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway in turn and enter the values noted above. Select Done when you’re finished and the console will prompt to test the connection again.

Very good article, thanks.
-
Editor - Julian ProkazaHi Paul1. Who's your mobile broadband provider? 2. You've run the Network Setup wizard multiple times..?3. Do you have a firewall running?
-

Hi. Great tutorial mate. But i still have a problem. Still fails at dns test. Have vista and the internet provider is tmobile (web n walk). i ve disabled the firewall as well. What kind of cable do i need? atm i m trying with a system link cable (the one from the original xbox). Could that be the problem? thanks a lot. pls reply
-
Editor - Julian ProkazaThe original Xbox cable should be fine, Raklis - that's what I used. Try running the Network Connection Wizard again - it took me a few tries before I got the Xbox to pass all the Live tests.Make sure the Xbox is connected to the PC and turned on, and your 3G connection is live when you try this. So, run Wizard, run Xbox Live tests, repeat five or six times in that order... Let us know how you get on.
-

I ve tried but same results. I ll try on another laptop. With xp this time. Dont like vista at all. On vista when i connect the cable it says limited connectivity. Could it be that?
-

Got it to work finally. With xp though and its on strict nat atm.
-
Editor - Julian ProkazaThere shouldn't be any difference between XP & Vista. "Limited connectivity" usually means that ICS isn't set up properly -- try running the wizard again.
-

hi julian. just the article i was looking for, thanks for writing it. i haven't subscribed to vodafone mobile broadband yet for this exact reason; that i was unsure if i could connect to xbox live with it, so i'm wondering in your opinion whether u think all this will work the same here in australia?
-
Editor - Julian ProkazaSorry Larry -- no idea. I suspect operators will run their networks in different ways in different countries, so what works in the UK may not work in Australia. All you can do is try contacting the operator to find out what NAT settings they use, or ask around online to see what other Xbox owners are using.
-

hi for the people who have a few problems connctng with vista, i thought i might add, when u connect ur ethernet cable and it says limited connection, go to netwrk n shrng centr and customize ur ethernet to private, this should make ur ethernet connection more discoverable.just thought it would help, but i still have probs with my strict NAT but i just play online anyway.
-

Guys made it work on both xp and vista. Strict on xp and open on vista. The problem was with a wireless built in connection. Had to disable it first and it worked then. Now sth else for playing online will it cost more or anything?
-

thanks i am on three pay as you go and i got got xbox live last nite using your advice have been playing gta 4 thanks again
-

i really need help. i have vista and i dont rly no how to put the vmc lite in the same connection as local area connection. and it fails at the ip adress.i no it is possible and really want to get hooked up. already have an account on live. iNEED XBOX LIVE.LOL.TIPS ON how to do it would be greatly recieved . cheers

First of all great article exactly what I was hunting for, but I have an annoying problem. I can set up a shared internet connection for both my 360 and wii both of which work ok ish (still not managed to get fully online with the 360 but I am able to stream music vids from the net via the media centre) the annoyance comes when I reset my laptop and switch off the console, I then cannot reconnect to the internet using the same settings when I turn every thing back on again the next day any ideas ????

8) hi i was comparing internet broadband packages online to play my xbox 360 and to surf .ive found that a 12 or 18 month contract is not viable when you have a 6month tenantcey agreement. i decided to look up mobile broadband (i have an wps1 skype phone on 3 mobile which is pay as you go and for 5 pounds a month you get a 2gb internet add on which lasts 30 days .then i used it as a modem for my laptop and hay pressto i got mobile internet for £40 initial layout and 5 pounds amonth with no contract.its only dial up but it does seem faster since youtube is no probs and other stuff is fast aswell)so now i want to play my xbox online since my neighbour has now put a password on his wireless connection so 1.what mobile broadband adapter has the fastest speeds to actually to play.tho im used to a bit of lag?2.which mobile dongle has the best money to gb ratio.3.basically which is the cheapest and which is the fastest pay as you go dongle????oh and im about to network my xbox to my pc with the wps1 just to see if it can be done .thanks to the site for good information well done
-

it works network the amoi skypephone and the xbox 360 with the laptop and you can logg into live .lolim testing the kwality now
-

8) skype phone. wp-s1 modem. 3 mobile amoi. vista.ok heres the deali have a wp-s1 3 mobile pay as you go .for 5 pouds a month i get 2gb internet access.i have used this phone as a modem and surf the net with it.although it says the phone will not work with vista its actually the software provided with the phone that will not work and all you do is go and set it up as if it was a dial up connection and change the default modem .so what i have done now using the info from the previous pages in this site is network my xbox to the laptop then used the phone as a modem and it will get me onto xbox live and i can play games.the lag is very poor so im wondering if the usb dongles give a better connection or is this as good as it gets?still its a £40 phone and its £5 for thirty days internet access with a 2 gb limit which is a better deal than the dongles since the phone is an amazing piece of kit for the price.i dont wanna keep worshipping it but if you ever get the chance to get one do it ,you wont be dissapointed.please let me know on how the dongles get on
-

Guys a legend, thank you, just doin the update now! Hopefully all shall go well.
-

Legend fella just doin the update, gta 4 here i come, well if it works regards craig

-

ok so i forgot to post an update here i did it in the skypephone amoi forum...here goes ...you can turn the modem speed up to the 2 from minimum speed which makes a dramatic differennce.also here whats new i got a fone for my mate to find it came supplied with a kingston memory card now.i found a few differences between the phones and to my horror we found none of this stuff works .so im in a hurry but pls if any one has time to work this out then help me im really not nerdy and im just an adverage joe .afdvice...the new phones that i cant get to do this have two barcodes on the back and a kingston memory card although some with two barcodes on the back but a cheaper no name sd memory will do it ....
-

i want to do this but i havnt signed up to anything yet. what is the length of time say a 3GB download limit would last on xbox live. playing times etc.Can anyone advise on which provider gives the best deal

it works, but i have strict nat settings.when i first set it up it was open, then i had trouble connectin the next day and its been on strict ever since. ive turned windows firewall off. using vodafone huawei e220 dongle, on vista. also if i change it to a static ip adress ( enter the automatin details into the manual setting) i cant even pass the ip test, and i would even know what to do with the statis ip if i could get one.

Same thing happened for me. At first my NAT was open, but now it is strict. I completely turned my firewall off, but that didn't help, so it can't be anything to do with it. Maybe it could just be voadfone in Australia. I know NAT is open in England, but maybe in Australia the setup is different.. all I know is that it's incredibly frustrating.

Thank you so much for this article, i have now connected my OLD xbox to the internet through my computer i just need a 30 day free subscription to try a game and test how it runs for lagging etc....
I have windows vista SP1 and a 3USB Modem and it took all of 30 minutes to getting working with the help from this website.
I followed the steps through just as described and all worked fine, when i connected my OLD XBOX to my computer Via a PATCH CABLE - Ethernet and turned on the old Xbox at first nothing happened and when i clicked on Xbox live i had messages saying unable to find IP address, i turned off the xbox and rebooted my computer and followed the steps again i then disconnected from the internet and re-connected then i turned on my xbox and tryed Xbox live again Clicked on Make a New Account and it worked.
I have tried connecting the old Xbox to make sure i could find a connection and it did now i carnt see it being a problem when i get my Xbox 360 hopefully for Christmas. I will leave more info later on if i can find a code to use a game on xbox live leaving information on lagging and downloading updates. -

Hi ,
I read through the tutorial here.
I have o2 mobile internet , connected through my pc, i can play online and everything but i cant get in the marketplace or get in the messenger or anything else. probably because NAT is on strict mode. Is there any chance to change it ? I really need to get some addons from marketplace :(
help pls. -

Great article but... can this be done with a mac? I used to have a normal wifi connection and I could share it with my 360 (even though I needed some special settings). Now I have mobile broadband on usb and just can´t get it working. Any ideas?
-

Just to say it IS possible to hook up to xbox live via a 3g modem for those using macbooks or any other mac system. And the use of a router isn't needed. I successfully did. It took patience, but its pretty straight forward when you take note of the things you imput into both the laptop and the xbox.
-

I still have this problem - did you resolve it craig?
-

WORK AMAZIN A++++ article
-

Hey man, just wanted to say thanks for typing this article in. Really great to know that USB modems can connect to live using computers. Still having troubles trying to reach the DNS checkpoint but hey, you gotta have patience right? Thanks once again man. Will tell if it works. Hopefully ^__^.
-

Mate... I would so hug you if you were here in Australia. This worked! ^___^. Thanks once again! I am now able to go online at live and buy stuff at marketplace! Thanks, thanks THANKS!

I've got passed the IP problem by deleting the existing bridge and then following step by step, make sure the option to allow others to intiate connection, not just share, is ticked...
stuck at DNS now though so waiting for my USB to acquire 3G+ and I'll give it another go -

i try set up xbox 360 live on my 3g modem stick will this work when i try it says ip address failed wot do i do
-

Mark, the instructions are straightforward if you just read it properly. I had to do the troubleshoot step to get past the DNS mark and now I am able to go Live in OPEN NAT setting. Read the instructions again and it will work. and remember dont plug your usb modem to your xbox 360 follow what the instruction says.
-

HolaFollowed the guide and it worked. In rough chronological order:-Bought the modem by itself from CEX. Had an old sim card from a PAYG 3 so thought I'd try that in it as none of the mobile phone shops I visited would sell me a Mobile Broadband Sim by itself.Had to adjust the dial-up program to use a different AP as it wouldn't connect (three.co.uk instead of the default). Hey presto it worked but crappy speeds. Also had to change the top up into an add on as 3 charge £1 PER MB!!! if you don't.Networked up my 360 as per the guide and the second time I tried to autodetect the settings it worked and connected to XBL where it straight away started downloading the dashboard update. The dash took about an hour to download so you can imagine I was expecting the connection to be unusable for XBL but I'm totally shocked at how good it actually is in practice. Even with 1 bar signal on the modem its still fast enough to play. Checked my PING and it was average 200ms so not the best.So far I've played Halo 3, COD 4 and The Orange Box online and had no problems. Been dumped out of 2 rounds and this is across about 6 hours of play so far. With regards to data transfer and costs, I got home from work tonight and played COD 4 for 3 hours. According to the little utility that comes with the 3 modem (which may or may not be accurate) the total data transferred back and forth was 67MB or so. I paid £15 credit for a 3GB data allowance so that seems like pretty good value. Obviously if you're gonna download Demo's and Videos then that'll be eaten up pretty quickly but for just playing online it should do fine. You can top up by £25 for 7GB if you need it.In summary, it's definitely worth a go if you can't get a landline where you are and all you wanna do is play online. I've read a lot of stuff about mobile BB being rubbish for XBL but where I am (Liverpool btw) it's boss.Great Article by the way, Thanks A Ton

Hi Guys,
After i updated my xbox to the new XBE i had to use automatic setting instead of manually configuring the IP/DNS etc. i also disabled my firewall and afterwards the xbox connects and plays without any issues...i have also allowed UPnP on my windows computer too...i hope this helps you get your xbox's online. -

Can't even get my laptop and xbox networked. Tried the network connection wizard and it says it can't complete. Any ideas? Followed the post, but cant get any where.
-

I think the guide is wrong, use a crossover cable not the patch cable, patch cables are for hubs etc.
-

How do i forward the ports on t-mobile?Do i have to ring them up or can i forward them through the wireless connection settings of the dongle?I have disabled the firewall on the ethernet connection to the xbox360.I loose connecton when i start a xboxlive match.
-
Editor - Julian ProkazaWell spotted, theartfulbodger - typo corrected (though if you use the stock Xbox cable, you'll be fine).
-

So far so good. it's updating my xbox now. Not one of the fastest updates my xbox has ever done. I can't wait. You've made a 15 year old boy very happy!!!!! THANK YOU!

-

finally figured it out yesterday using usb modem with my laptop running windows vista. you will need some thing called a wireless network connection[go to network and sharing click manage network connections its should benext to your local area connection under LAN. Ok heres what i did starting from scratch, 1st connect your ethernet cable from xbox to pc turn on xbox, next go to manage network connections and bridge your local area connection[xbox] to your wireless network connection.then turn on internet connection sharing for the modem u are using if u are doing this for the 1st time u should get a message like 'this will not take effect until the next time u redial' or something like that so so disconnect your modem tthen plug it in again but dont connect to the internet . HERE'S THE TRICK- instead of connecting to the internet the way you normally do, you right click on Wireless Network Connection and choose connect. it takes you to the next page where u highlight your modem and hit connect. thats it . hopefully this works for u as it did me
-

Ive done all this and it still dose not work
-

Hello, i recently lost my BT Broadband, i used to go on xbox live everyday! :( Im getting a Mobile broadband dongle....any recommendations onto which one? Also i am using xp and an ethnet cable!
-

check out mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk for dongle recommendations. The best advice is to use the coverage checker to make sure you are able to get good signal in your area before you buy.
-

hey you guys !! want to know the best way to connect .. firstly own a 3G mobile with wifi , there are bargains in the nokia range i use a nokia 5800 touchscreen music.
do and dont's
1) dont buy a dongle or even think contract for one of those.
2) DO invest in mobile with wifi
3) DO have the 3.2 mbps 3g signal best is three network by FARRR!!
4) DONT buy an expensive 7.8 mbps mobile thinking its faster. It will only give out the standard 3.2 mbps rate of all mobile 3g networks anyway, technically there is vodaphones premium vodaphone rate speeds of 7.8 but thats at a cost.
5) most of you just need the saving of renting a landline and just want a better quality desirable mobile AM I RIGHT!!
6) THE KEY SOFTWARE TO LINK ALL OF YOUR 3G INTERNET T YOUR 360 VIA WIFI IS EASY ITS AUTOMATIC USING JUST ONE OF THE THREE SOFTWARE PURCHASES OUT THERE WRITTEN FOR SYMBIAN MOBIULES SUCH AS NOKIA AND SAMSUNG SONY E .THOSE ARE ALL THE SAME . SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS MOBILES TOO .
7) CHECK OUT THIS THREE'S NETWORK CALLED" SPOT" WITH A DATA INTERNET PACKAGE ON ALL OF THE NET NOT MOBILE INTERNET"WAP TYPE" NO YOU WANT THE DATA DOWNLOAD ON CONTRACT OR PAYG LIKE THE DONGLE YES ITS NOT CLEAR AS THEY SAY!!
8) THEY MAY NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU CAN SHARE ALL YOUR FREE INTERNET .THATS WHY DATA MAINLY DOWNLOADING PAID FOR IS FINE , THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT .
9) I LL GET 2 POINT GOOGLE JOIKUSPOT PREMIUM and go for that @ £!7.50 or from main site only the "my mobile hotspot" which was patient pending , now all networks will or have allready ripped it off on contract.
10) the joikuspot one lookout for the beta one its 4th generation WIMAX alike speeds that can pull all wifi signals shared together for the 7.8mbs . This is good as it Gets folks so remember not the dongle or mifi gadger unlesss you want old tech clogging up those full drawers.
JUST TURN YOUR PHONE INTP A ROUTER INSTEAD JUST REMEmBER TO PLUG POWER TO THE MOBILE IN FOR XBOX LIVE!! as for udp and nat dont worry its no a big deal and dont expect to stream hd movies you need atleast 4 meg plus for that ok live long and prosper from the wizzy man!! -

thank you you f**king genius!!!
-

HOW TO CONNECT TO XBOX LIVE USING A USB 3G MODEM ON MAC
Yes you can do this with the MAC its really easy. Just follow the steps.
1- Plug in USB modem stick to mac
2- Connect ethernet cable from xbox to mac
3- Go to Settings > Sharing on your mac
4- Enable Filesharing, Internet Sharing and Web Sharing
There we go your connected. IF its not working please follow the steps below...
FOLLOW step 1 and 2 above then...
3- Go to Settings > Network on your mac.
4- Look for the active network and write the same ip details and dns info in your xbox live network settings in dashboard. Then test xbox live connection and reset your 3gb mobile modem stick by turning off and on. Reset xbox and your in!
This works and has been tested by me.
BUT REMEMBER YOUR ACCOUNT MUST NOT HAVE A PASSWORD. NEITHER YOUR MAC! -

I've been playing on live with my Verizon USB modem for about 3 years now. Everything works fine. But now my brother has an Xbox and would also like to connect to Live the same time as me.
We live in a remote area, given the reason we don't have traditional internet with a router. Simply, I connect my Xbox to my laptop, then turn on the modem and connect to Live, but since there is only one (1) Ethernet port, how would I connect his Xbox to the connection? Could I use a switch? Or a USB to Ethernet Splitter? -

I have vodafone mobile broadband and i cannot get xbox live to work. It says when I try to connect to xbox live that the xbox cannot find my IP Adress, and when I go on Network sharing on neytwork I cannot find the file 'windows interenet sharing', does anyone have a solution to the problem, thanks.
-

Thank You, it is really helpful. :]
-

thank you for such wonderful article
-

is there a step by step how to do it for idiots like me............... with pop up pictures
-

The only way I could get Xbox Live to work via my Orange 3G was to use Static IP on the Xbox and PC.
Make sure that the PC's IP and XBox IP are simular i.e 192.168.0.1(for PC) and 192.168.0.2(for Xbox). On your Xbox set the Gatway to your PC's IP address. The Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0 on both the PC and Xbox.
Then on your dongle's dial-up connection simply "Enable Internet Sharing" which will be under the properties. Dial-up and you should be set to go.
Don't forget if you have a Firewall to allow your Xbox's IP. -

can you use a computer dongle and just stick it into your xbox
-

i did everything!!!it wont work pls someone help!!!!!!
-

i cant get past internet!!!did once but not anymore
-

Just came across this thread so I thought I'd add a bit. I managed to get connected to X Box live after about a week of trying. Connection was near perfect. I am using a Vodafone dongle connected to my pc by ethernet lead. OS is Windows XP. The only thing I found was that I have to run network set up wizard every time I want switch on the Xbox. No big deal as it only takes about 3 mins. Look online & you should be fine. Good luck all.
-

Vista - link your XB via a patch cable go to netwrk sharing centre on your control panel and select your 3g connection and view status click on properties on the tabs at the top of the pop-up got to sharing select allow other network users to connect via this computers internet connection then set your home networking connection to local area connection 2 then try your luck this should work!!!
-

hi im trying to connect the pc and the xbox ive got an o2 dongle plugged in and the internet is working fine but when i do the test on the xbox box it doesnt get past the network part and if i click share the internet it disconnects me but then the xbox says it can't connect what do i do?
-

I am using T-Mobile 3GB 24 Months, i started using Xbox Live a few months ago, i am using it well, and it isnt brilliant with the poorer broadband, but i can still get my Call Of Duty fix for a few hours, i cant use it between 4PM and 12AM (sometimes i can get it between 11Pm-12AM) then its fine for the rest of the night, and its brilliant early morning and early afternoon.
I experienced the frustrating NAT issues, but i know how to get rid of that, i am using Vista so i am not sure about 7 or Xp. but to get a open NAT, you first go to Network, then press Network and Sharing (or search Network and Sharing in the search), then go to view status on your Dongle connection (under T-Mobile or whatever your ISP is) and then press properties, then press Sharing from the tab menu, then press settings underneath, and then delete all the ports that says Xbox on it, then you will get an open NAT everytime, you will have to keep doing this process every so often but its not a big problem really.
Make sure all third part Anti Virus Firewalls are off, i think you can just use the windows and its fine, if not make sure in the exceptions tab there is TCP3074 and UDP3074 in there, you may have to add the port.
im not entirely loving Mobile Broadband, but im doing best with it i can, downloading all sorts of third part programs, but no luck, but its fine, i get minimal lag at certain parts of the day. -

hey kyle

follow the guide for open NAT. i use it for xbox live. run network through PC and enable network sharing. -

Kyle, the reason u cant use it between 4pm and midnight is because u have used all your data allowance meaning u only have unlimited usage between midnight and 4pm. as for open NAT follow guide at this addy

I've been trying to update my Xbox360 through Live update for almost five days straight. I found this article and it worked like a charm. The first try and we were through. Thank you again.
-

The article was easy to follow and my Xbox says I'm connected to Xbox Live. It tells me there's an update available. When I try to download the update it starts downloading but after 1 second it says: "Can't download the update. To test your connection..."
Could it be a firewall thing? I'm using the regular windows firewall. -

Usb modem troubles :/
On xbox live i plug my modem in, connect to the internet then plug ethernet cable into back of laptop but when i test connection it doesent get past the first stage,
something to do with my IP adress :(
I dont know what to do
Regards -

in my experiance, sometimes your xbox doesnt obtain an IP address from your network, go into Network on the dashboard (this is on the Xbox obviously), then make sure your Xbox is recieving a DNS nuber, if the DNS number is 0.0.0.0, turn off your xbox and try again, if you give the xbox a static address, it downgrades your performance on xbox live, and give you a strict NAT, so go into Network and make sure your xbox is getting a DNS number, if its not, keep turning it off and on until it does
-

i have done all of this my ip address is aparing on my xbox but the dns cant get it god i hate mobile broadband
-

does anyone no how to get your xbox 360 through your laptop usin a 02 dongle that would be great if someone could talk me through it cheers
-

Wakil, i may have found a solution
- press the start button
- go into network
- then network and sharing
- then press manage network connections
- then right click on what ethernet cable you use to connect your PC/laptop onto your Xbox 360 (it should be something like Local Area Connection)
- press properties
- then press Internet Protocol version 4
- then use following IP address
- type in IP address 192.168.0.1
- then press on the next Subnet Mask, just press into the first box and leave the numbers left in there.
- then press ok, and close the window.
- reset everything
- and fire up everything and it should find it. (though not everytime, you may need to reset it if your Xbox cant find the DNS server (a little trick, if you cant get it, press Test Xbox Live, then cancel straight away, and go and see if the DNS number comes up, wait a few seconds, and if it doesnt try reseting it. -

Wakil i may have found a solution to your problem, go into network and sharing, then manage network connections on the left hand side, right click on your ethernet it should say something like Local Area Connection, right click on it, press properties, the press Internet Protocol Version 4, then use the following IP address, and then put into the IP address, 192.168.0.1, the press onto Subnet mask but leave the numbers that come up there, and press ok, restart your internet and xbox, then try again. but again you may have to turn the xbox off and on again a few times, also try testing the connection on your xbox, but come straight back out, hold about 50 seconds, and look again to see if the DNS number comes up, then sign in.
-

Ur a legend nice one dude!!!!!

Hey, thanks for the info!
But I have a weird question.
When I connect to my friends laptop with my USB Broadband, it gives open nat on my xbox.
But when I use it on my cpu (firewall turned off), it's still strict nat.
Help.
Friends Laptop Notes:
-Kaspersky Antivirus On
-Windows Vista
My CPU:
-Kaspersky Anitvirus off
-Windows 7
-Removed every single virus protection, firewall etc (at least i think?)
Any help will be appreciated. -

i have t-mobile uk and it is strict what shall i do
-

I'm using Macbook Pro atm and 3 broadband, sharing internet works fine but cant seem to get NAT to open? Only get 'moderate', any suggestions?
-

Nakhil- some ISP's make sure you get an Strict NAT, so its probably your ISP, Mobile Broadband ISP's dont support Xbox Live, so if you contact your ISP, they will probably say well dont go on Xbox Live.
cheesykid- i have t-mobile, and i have an open NAT, this is what i've done, firstly connect everything, the way it says in the editors tutorial.
1) make sure in the view status of you internet, make sure it says allow other network users to control or disable ICS.
2) if this didnt work, go into settings at the bottom of the sharing tab on your internet connection, and delete all the sentances that say xbox (192.168...etc).
3) do not give a static IP or DNS number in on your xbox, always set to automatic.
if your on XP, e-mail me (skybluekyle at hotmail.co.uk) and i will give you a hand with that. (there Vista instructions) -

I've done all the steps for XP multiple times but at the end of the configuration i keep getting an error message saying to repeat with different settings or manually configure! What can i do???

Hello guys for all that had an open NAT first time they log on to Xbox Live, do the following you first
go to Network, then press Network and Sharing (or search Network and Sharing in the search), then go to view status on your Dongle connection (under T-Mobile or whatever your ISP is) and then press properties, then press Sharing from the tab menu, then press settings underneath, and then delete all the ports that says Xbox on it, then you will get an open NAT everytime, you will have to keep doing this process every so often but its not a big problem really.
Make sure all third part Anti Virus Firewalls are off, i think you can just use the windows and its fine, if not make sure in the exceptions tab there is TCP3074 and UDP3074 in there, you may have to add the port.
also, what is everyones average speed whilst playing?
FIFA: Team Play- up:25KBps Down:60KBps
Head to head up:24KBps Down:26KBps

I have a t-mobile dongle and have windows 7 installed on my laptop. im using a cross over ethernet cable. iv done all the things it says above and im still not getting passed the 'network' stage when i configure the network on my xbox 360. its really frustrating. i have no firewalls enabled and i dont know what the problem is. i even have all things connecting 'automatically'. anyone got any ideas on how to connect it with windows 7 which i may not of tried? means alot if someone could give me an answer. thanks
-

Hey has anyone tried this with 3's new MIFI its wireless mobile broadband ... i am thinking of buying it and want to know if it works better ???
-

This is great! It works perfectly with Windows 7 as well! If you do exactly the steps from step 1, then it works. First have the cable plugged in the pc and the console (which should be turned off), then connect to the mobile internet in the pc, then turn on the console and wait. Then you make the appropriate setting in the pc and then you go to xbox to test the connection..
However, I am wondering if it is possible to do this wirelessly (without the ethernet cable), since I have a 360 wireless adaptor and is wasted now... -

I don't want to seem like the odd one out or whatever but bow do I do this with an iMac?
-

i have treid this method many times i have noticed that when i do the wizard i cannot select my modem?! and what network i want to use?! is it because of this that i cannot connect my xbox to live? my xbox just keeps telling me that it cannot find an ip adress... i have been struggling with this problem for a while and i would like to know if anyone can help me with my problem, thanks
-

Australian'S, It does work in aus it works fine, im on xp with vodafone prepaid usb modem just plug into pc and got to network conections right clik select properties advanced and tick the boxes for shared internet, too easy
-

hi, i've followed your step by step guide (the vista one), and have tried testing the connection. however it keeps failing with the reason its unable to obtain an IP address from the modem, even though the modem is automatically assigning the address. i have noticed though on 3G connect DHCP is not enabled, and i am unsure as to how to enable it. any suggestions please?
-

i have this problem after solvin the IP address issue, 'Your DNS server can't resolve the names of the Xbox Live servers or Xbox.com'
Help please? -

Thank You!! It worked perfectly after about a 5 minute setup.
-

firstly for mobile broadband check which service providers mast is nearest to you, that way the better the signal the better it runs
secondly instead of using a pc to connect via internet sharing for xbox i went on ebay and got a "3" router in which you can plug ya dongle in(has to be a huawai dongle and not a zte one), theres one ethernet port on the router i plug the xbox into it and cos the router is wireless i can also connect to internet as many things i want which is wireless ie ipod,,psp, laptop, ect..
hope it helps
ps i use the "3" network no probs averaging 2.4 mb -

i have managed to get connected to threw on t-mobile usb modem even with a krone 5e patch cord which ive seen on here that its not surpose to work hehe but i cant get onto live sign up as it says its currently unavailable and to try again later which i have been doing i have disabled firewall befor anyone asks ideas btw really good tutorial

Hi all, I used to use the BT homehub, but after being Out-Of-Area cancelled paying for something I wasn't using. On returning I used my '3' Mobile broadband USB dongle (5gb monthly usage) to attempt the connection to Xbox LIVE. What a brilliant article. Follow this above and hey presto it works!
1) Mobile Dongle not detecting the 'Local Area Connection' (Xbox via Ethernet cable)
To rectify this problem simply, right-click on your PC/Laptop's wireless or other devices icon and click disable. Run the wizard again and in the 'sharing' tab you should see 'Local Area Connection' as opposed to 'Wireless Area Connection'.
2) Upon running the Xbox Live Connection Test in the Xbox dashboard everything went fine. Router (Dongle via Laptop) Detected, IP Address, Internet Access, Xbox Live test.....all smooth and fine!
However came to download the new update......no progress. Here's what to do.....
If you have a 3rd party firewall (McAfee, Norton, etc) activated, de-activate it. Once you have de-activated your firewall you will need to, in this order, switch off the Xbox then your laptop/pc then start up again.....remember laptop/pc 1st as this is providing the connection. For some reason when you disconnect any local area connection whilst the Xbox is on and reconnect, you cant access Xbox Live. (Had the same issue when using the fixed landline router.) This is an Xboxism and simply means switching your Xbox off and on again!
3) No further problems encountered....so far......have 3.6mbps dongle with 5g monthly usage and ping of 160m/s. All in all so far so good. Remember to scour your room or whereever you're using the dongle to get the best connection (near windows and away from other electronic equipment, lead lined walls, caves, countryside, etc).

With reference to my previous post I was using Window Vista on a laptop, have the green and black ZTE model dongle on the '3' network and an old arcade xbox with an elite hard drive and a 10m ethernet cable!
Make sure all xbox and pc network settings are default bar the sharing!
Enjoy -

Very good Article.
Googled how to set up Xbox360 using 3G and this was the first linkl i went to.
Connected an ethernet cable from xbox to my laptop and plugged in the 3G modem dongle and followed the steps by Julian Prokaza on Tuesday 13 May 2008 using my Windows XP Laptop.
I was amazed when it worked and my xbox360 connected and I was able to join a party.
Don't need a BT phone line!
Thanks

Hey Guys, I like Most have found this page to hit the
head on the nail. I am running on a 3GB Huawei Mobile Broadband. I have gone to Network
and Sharing and Changed the Modem's settings to allow other users to connect through etc... (setting to Shared) I'm Sure its possible but I haven't been able to get passed the IP Adress.. I also changed them manually and I have not gotten passt the step. My xbox suggests something about MAC filtering and a DCHP on my -

when i run the xbox LIVE test, it tells me that my MTU is too low, i don't how to change it to suit LIVE. i am with an o2 dongle. can anyone help me?
-

Hi just read the article and thanks! Unfortunately though, Julian, I am on Windows 7, on a HP laptop is it the same as on Vista? Could really do with your help thanks!
-

You can use a usb broadband stick to connect to Xbox live. when you switch on your computer/laptop connect the usb then click start then all connections.
switch on your xbox then test the connection. if it doesn't work at all on all connections right click on your dial up connection and select properties. go on the advanced or sharing tab.
the ALLOW OTHER NETWORK USERS TO CONNECT THROUGH THIS COMPUTERS INTERNET CONNECTION.
Now try.
if this doesn't work then go on advanced and disable firewall as this my restrict sharing.
this may even give an open nat response to xbox's networking systems.
If you need more advice comment on the main page and address my name at the top of the comment in capitals. hope it helps. -

This worked perfectly for me the first time, then i logged off, shut down the computer, when to bed, woke up the next day, started everything up again. Didnt work, Repeated and followed your steps but now i cant get it to work?
Any idea what the problem is? -

Having just connected a friends xbox online using a PC and a '3' mobile internet dongle I thought I would add a few comments.
Firstly, ensure you have an ethernet cross-over cable and not a standard patch cable. They may look exactly the same and the patch cable even allows internet connection to the xbox but you won't be able to play online. Almost all ethernet cables are 'patch' so make sure you have the correct one. This means purchasing a xbox system link cable or cross-over cable, you can't use the standard cable that comes with your home internet router! If you are not sure what type of cable you have then do a quick google search and it will explain the difference (Some of the wires are crossed over!).
Connect the mobile internet and xbox to the PC and ensure they are all on. On the xbox settings menu go to 'Network Settings' and then 'Edit Settings'. You will most likely be connected using automatic IP Settings. Make a note of the IP address, Subnet Mask and Gateway. Change the IP Settings to Manual and enter the information as it was in automatic but leave the DNS Gateway settings as they were. (Keep a note of the IP address as you will need this later.)
Now go to the PC. On 'Network Connections' ensure that both the mobile internet and the PCs ethernet port (where the xbox is plugged in) are on the same network type (Public Network). Go through the tutorial above and share the mobile internet connection. Once shared, click on the Settings button within the Internet Connection Sharing box. You will see a series of check boxes with names. First, make sure that the box 'Web Server (HTTP)' is checked. Next you will need to add 5 new services. Click the add button and add the following ports: UDP 88, TCP 53, UDP 53, TCP 3074, UDP 3074. Name each description whatever you like but I suggest some thing like 'Xbox 1', 'Xbox 2' etc. In the 'IP address' box put in the IP address that you set to manual on the xbox settings. The external and internal port number should be the same as above (ie 88 and 88). Repeat this for each port. Once they are all added ensure they are checked and OK all the settings.
Disconnect your mobile broadband and reconnect. Go back to the xbox and test the xbox live connection. You may get a warning notice saying your connection to xbox live is not as good as it should be but don't worry as long as it connects to xbox live. We were only able to get a moderate NAT type but we think this is due to the mobile internet and not the PC settings. Now try playing a game online!
This worked for us and hope this helps some of you out there. Happy Gaming! -

does this work on the new xbox 360 console

hi im just wondering how much online gaming time would i get if i was to get a 5gb dongle thanks

AWESOME POST!!! WORKED after the first try. have been struggling for ages. THANKS MATE.. S.A needs you
-

HELP... when i go onto properties to get the sharing tab its not there does anyone know how that is and how do i get it.
-

hi you all.
so, nowadays, do you still confirm that 3 doesn't block any port?
that it means that no NAT is used, isn't?
thank you very much -

I can say that T-mobile does give strict NAT unfortunately. How come this comment section gives a happy and angry, but no sad?
Please can you add this to your tutorial. I don't have any evidence to back this up but if you search t-mobile NAT, and the first non-advertised result, you can see someone struggling with T-mobile NAT, and there are quite a few more like that -

I use T-Mobile, ATM, and have done for some time, with a phone, though; Samsung Jet S8000. I have had problems, yes, sometimes detrimental to gameplay, but none-the-less, I've been to make use of it for XBOX Live, which has been pretty awesome. I can thankfully (and with relief) say that I'm switching to the super-awesome Virgin fibre-optic up to 10meg broadband that's fully unlimited!
The above steps are good. I can verify that T-Mobile (if at least for me, at this date) can make use of Live, with a "moderate" NAT, and yes I've had issues with connectivty, whether it be someone connecting to me, or the other-way around. Just like to add, that I am referring to Gold, as for standard Live functions, they've worked perfectly fine, if a little slow (even on 3G+) but I think for me it is because of some settings on my laptop being wrong (I go from phone, to laptop, to XBOX, ATM) and causing it to only detect "240kbps" as apposed to my PC registering it as "3.6mbps".
Some people might have issues with ICS not showing on the pertinent tab, and I've had that problem, myself; I, and my brother, found the only way to solve this, was to re-install Windows, or perhaps try a SR point, but I imagine to most that's out of the question. -

thanks for the description. I have tried it 9 times but still no luck, i used thevista and the laptop. but im wondering, there is no ip address or any of that showing on the xbox and im wondering if i should set it on manual? thanks :)
-

hi just wondering how this can be done on windows 7 because there is no network wizard
-

thanks a lot worked perfectly first time after following your way.
-

This works well for Windows 7! =]
1.You have to dial into 3G first with your phone or USB modem.Then...
2.You MUST however set a static ip for the PC like 192.168.4.1 on your 'LAN' connection.(doesn't matter ,as it will change when you enable ICS.)
3.In windows 7 's control panel, go to 'Network and sharing center'. Then, on the left pane click 'Change Adapter Settings', right click the dial up modem, click properties... Select the 'sharing' tab and check 'Allow other network users to connect....bla bla bla', click OK.
4.It will warn you IP for LAN adapter will change. This is OK. Just make a note of the ip address(mine was 192.168.137.1).
5.Disconnect and reconnect the modem and dial-up again.
6.Go to the Xbox 360, on the dashboard go to console settings -> network -> wired connection -> configure.
7. Set your console's ip to 192.168.137.2 and gateway as 192.168.137.1 (your PC)
8. Test Xbox live connection...
That worked 1st time on my PC/Xbox !!
Njoy... -

We have measured between 1,5 and 2 MB for a 6 minutes game MW2.
The XBOX was WIFI connected to an Iphone 4 was used as personal hot spot.
The measurement was done by the Iphone 4.
Mobile Internet was 6 Mbit/s - max speed. Average speed measured a few times: 3 Mbit/s.
According to this, one full hour of gaming would give 2 MB / 6 min * 60 min = 20 MBytes of data transfer. 5 hours of full gaming would give just 100 MB of data transfer (this is approximately 8 hours of not full gaming I would say, so one day).
With a contract of 2 GB / month, you can play for about 20 days, 5 full hours/day.
Has somebody measured something different? It seems a very small data transfer, but maybe a lot is done locally by the XBOX, and the shared information are not that much for such "real time" games.
-

Just forgot our movie showing also how the gaming works.
