Hands-on video of the Asus Eee PC 1000

Asus kindly dropped of yet another Eee PC earlier today – the Eee PC 1000-BK002. As we’ve already reported, this is a 10in screen netbook with an Intel Atom processor, but it’s essentially a scaled-up version of the Eee PC 901 and you’ll see the close resemblance with the two side-by-side.

The Eee PC 1000 competes head-on with the MSI Wind U100, but there’s really little to choose between the two. The 1000 is a little bigger than the Wind, but it does have a couple of points in its favour.

First, it’s cheaper than the Wind – £349 for the 80Gb HDD Windows XP model (and £369 for the Linux one, with a 40Gb SSD), compared to £364 for the Wind (though the Advent 4211, a rebadged Wind, costs £280). Second, it has a 6600mAh battery – the Wind makes do with a disappointingly small 2200mAh cell.

The keyboards on both the Eee PC 1000 and MSI Wind are exactly the same size, though our prototype model had a few issues that will hopefully be addressed by the time the netbook actually ships.

At this stage, it’s difficult to make a call about which is best, but that king-size battery makes the Eee PC 1000 very tempting. We’ll run a full set of battery and performance benchmarks as soon as we can, and publish them with our full review in a day or two. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the hands-on video.

One number in the text seems to be wrong. It says £269 for the 40Gb SSD Eee PC 1000 with Linux, while the video says £369.It seems to me the Eee beats the MSI Wind by far with that battery since the price is practically the same.

My bad - that's a typo and the price is £369. Corrected now - thanks for the spot!

That's odd. The Eee 1000 will be about $100 more expensive than the Wind, in the US. Also, the Wind shipping right now only has the 3-cell battery. The six-cell battery model, available in a month or so, should have about double the run time, and cost about $20 more (in the US.) Over here, the Wind seems like the one to get.

The Asus Eee PC 1000 has better battery life than the wind.

Jenny, ASUS EEE PC 1000 can you check and comment on the visual quality of typed text in either Wordpad or the app in Works. Look at a line of your typed text (any font, 14 point). Is the appearance uniform or is there a patchiness which is unsightly?
