Hands-on video of the Advent 4211 netbook

Advent 4211PC World has kindly sent us an Advent 4211 for review – we say ‘kindly’ as we gather that these netbooks are in short supply at the moment and we’re sure PC World would much rather sell any boxes it can get its hands on than ferry them to journalists for review. And to make matters worse, we’re not even going to review the Advent 4211.

Why not? Because we’ve already reviewed it in the guise of the Wind U100 – yes, the Advent 4211 is nothing more than a rebadged MSI Wind netbook. Which is where things get interesting…

As we’ve already explained in the Wind U100 review and News, not only is the Advent 4211 on sale now (assuming you can find one still in stock), but it’s also cheaper than the yet-to-go-on-sale MSI model. As we write this, the Advent 4211 with Windows XP Home is listed on the PC World website at £279.99 with free delivery.

The best price we can find for the MSI Wind using Froogle is £333.70.00 at Scan Computers for the Linux model – the cheapest Windows XP model costs £357.74 at Expansys (and is pink).

We’re not quite sure how PC Word can sell the Advent 4211 before the MSI Wind U100 and for £77 less, but we do know one thing – it’s a considerably better deal than the Wind at this price.

The Wind missed its chance at anything more than a recommendation thanks to MSI’s decision to chop its battery capacity by a third and yet not lower the price accordingly. As a result, it’s the most expensive netbook you can buy – even the 10in screen Asus Eee PC 1000, with its 5800mAh cell, has a slightly lower SRP of £349.

We’re running a few tests on the Advent 4211 before we give our final verdict, so in the meantime, here’s a short hands-on video that shows it next to the MSI Wind U100. And if you want to know more about this Advent-branded netbook, just read our MSI Wind U100 review.

Incidentally, cheap PC seller Medion also has a rebadged MSI Wind U100 in the works, in the shape of the Akoya Mini E1210. It's been available in Germany for some time, but there's no news yet on a UK launch.
