Hands-on with the Samsung NC10 netbook

Now that Toshiba has launched a netbook of its own (the NB100 – look out for a review shortly), there aren’t many big-name laptop manufacturers left without a netbook in their line-up. And you can now cross Samsung off the list – its new NC10 just arrived in the Mobile Computer office and so we’ve shot a short video to give our first impressions.
Specifications-wise, the NC10 isn’t much to get excited about – it has the standard netbook set-up of Intel Atom N270 processor, 1Gb of RAM and Wi-Fi (but no Draft-N), but the 160Gb hard disk makes it rather more versatile than the low-capacity SSDs used by other manufacturers. The 10.2in LED-backlit screen has the same 1024 x 600 resolution as most other models, but it is very bright and vibrant, and easily among the best we’ve seen so far on a netbook. And, of course, there’s the tempting £299 price tag…
The two stand-out features are the build quality and the keyboard. The NC10 is a big netbook and at 1.3kg, is a bit of a bruiser. It feels extremely well put together though, and the sparkly matte finish that both looks and feels great. We reckon it’s almost as good-looking as the Asus Eee PC S101 – and that netbook costs £150 more.
The NC 10 will be available in white, blue and black, and we suspect the black model will be the best-looking – the silver trim on NC10 looks a little odd against the white case.
The keyboard is huge (for a netbook) and Samsung has used every inch of available space and the large, well-spaced keys are almost as comfortable to type on as a full-size keyboard. It also has Samsungs’ anti-bacterial ‘nano silver’ coating – we have no idea how effective this is at keeping germs at bay, but at least it doesn’t weigh much…
Our model came with a 5200mAh battery and our early tests suggest that this should run for around four hours of heavy use (not light use, as stated in the video!). Interestingly, we have seen some early reviews that state that the NC10 has a SIM card slot behind the battery – our model does not, but it does have what looks like a blanking plate where a SIM slot could be. More on this when we publish the full review in the next few days.

My blue model is on order. Everything I've read about this makes it look like a winner.
The USIM slot is there on Asian models but doesn't appear to have made it into UK versions, which is a shame as I'd love to not have to use a dongle. -
Sorry, not a comment but a question from a serious non teccy.Am just abut to buy this for writing on the move but need to know if/how I can add MS word or similar for copywriting on the go.Don't want to load the whole of office as I don't need it and think this is likely to slow things down considerably.Any ideas / advice? -

One more vote for Open Office - it's excellent, and Word compatible. -
Does the indicator next to the webcam on this netbook actually works? Or is it just text? Would like to know because I am looking for a netbook which has a webcam indicator light (and noticed many do not have this) -
have to say I love this. I have an EEE and a mini-note right now & the one thing I wish for is more battery life. Happy to bump up to 1.3kg if they last even 1/2 the quoted 8 hours. -
does the netbook come with a case like the ee pcs -
i just put in an order for one a black at pc world last night, cant wait! -
i think open office is a cut above MS office. -
Bought a black one as a christmas present for the partner from SaveOnSamsung.com (thanks MCM!) - £330 w. a 2GB memory upgrade & free next day shipping.
It's a classy little thing, getting loads of oohs and ahhs in the office. -
Anybody know if they supply the OS software when you buy this notebook? (So do you get a CD of windows xp?) -
