Smartphone review: The Sony Ericsson Vivaz

I've got what I consider to be a really nice little camera (the Kodak EasyShare DX6490). It's a bit old now (it came out around 2004), by today's standards, but still takes a brilliant picture, while the 10x zoom is fantastic. I'm a happy snapper - I really don't need anything better.

But what's really amazing that I've got these brilliant pictures from all over the world with it, and you know how many megapixels it has? Four. A measly four. So you can imagine what I was expecting from the Sony Ericsson Vivaz, with its headline grabbing eight megapixels - and HD video capture capabilities, no less.

However, eight million pixels is only half the battle; or maybe a third - perhaps even less. Personally, I like a grip on my phone. And a flash bigger than the end of a ballpoint pen. Call me old fashioned, but I quite like a lens that's bigger than a one pence piece too. But then I wanted a camera, so I bought one.

The Vivaz is, of course, a smartphone at heart. Unlike a certain 'smartphone' maker we could mention, you'll have no problem answering and making calls, sending texts etc (as long as you're happy using a stylus and an on-screen keyboard). It comfortably meets the 'phone' criteria. And, if you like the Symbian OS most commonly connected with Nokia handsets, getting around the menus and apps will be a breeze too.

It's also ergonomic and elegant, but somehow it just didn't click with me - and I'm not just talking about the camera. To read the full review, and to check out the latest deals available for it, head over to our dedicated Sony Ericsson Vivaz page.
