Executives from telecoms companies such as BT, Virgin Media, BskyB, Vodafone and The Carphone Warehouse will today meet up with Stephen Timms, the competitive minister, to discuss building a network that enables consumers to download music and films at a faster speed.
Strategic plans to increase the speed would include replacing copper wires with fibre optic cables, an improvement that would set the telecoms sector back £15 billion.
Virgin Media is expected to announce that it will raise its broadband performance to 50 megabits per second from next year. This service is expected to be available to 70% of customers by the end of 2008. Timms is expected to encourage BT to carry out similar improvements.
