Nintendo and NTT to promote Wii Web access

Nintendo and telecoms operator NTT will be pairing together to promote the broadband Web access of the Nintendo Wii console.

Next year, Nintendo are set to launch a new online service, WiiWare that will allow customers to purchase new game software titles via the net. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp will be aiming to boost subscribers to its fibre optic-based Web connection service and the popularity of Wii is estimated to deliver a good source of potential customers.

Since last year’s launch, Nintendo’s Wii (a console that is controlled by a motion-sensing remote) has sold over 13.2 million units.

NTT East Senior Executive Vice President Tetsuo Koga told journalists at a recent news conference: “I hope our fibre-optic service becomes as popular as the Wii… I think we have won a powerful ally to hit our target to boost fibre-optic subscribers to 20 million by the year ending March 2011.”
