Mobile broadband set to overtake fixed-line by 2010

Growth in sales for mobile broadband could drastically overtake fixed-line broadband connections within the next couple of years, according to reports. Many laptop customers are attracted to the flexibility of mobile broadband, especially as it reduces the need to hunt down for a nearby WiFi hotspot. However, there is concern that in order for the service to really take off, developments must be made to improve data transfers. Currently, the cheaper broadband deals only have monthly download limits of 1GB, whilst the most expensive mobile broadband packages of £25, still has a cap of 7GB. Previously, research by Informa Telecoms & Media indicated that there would be more than one billion broadband subscribers worldwide in 2011, with the majority of users opting for mobile rather than fixed systems: "Mobile broadband will represent close to half of total mobile service revenues in 2012, making it one of the largest and most strategically important segments of the mobile industry," said Mike Roberts, lead author of Informa's Future Mobile Broadband report.
