Tiscali has answered back to BT’s statement that more needs to be done by ISPs to make sure that users are aware that their internet connection may vary from the advertised maximum rate.
Speaking on TechRadar, Tiscali assured customers that they were already doing their utmost to ensure their customers were aware of the differences between advertised and received speeds.
“I think the point is that most of the major ISPs are doing very similar things in terms of marketing,” Tiscali’s Director of PR & Communications Jody Haskayne told TechRadar.com.
Speaking directly on BT’s statement Haskayne continued: “I don’t really know where BT is coming from on this – within two or three clicks of the customer coming on to our site we give them a speed check based on phone-number that tells them the likely speed. That information is provided and maintained by BT.”
“I think we do as much as we can to give customers the information about the actual likely speed of their broadband.”

Just WHO do Tiscali think they are kidding?
I pay for a up to 8 meg connection. When I was first connected it was 2meg plus, Tiscali said thee was i line problem, but as this house was then my holiday home I was not worried. But now (last 5 months)I am living here full time having retired. I now see my speed some times as slow as dialup!
Yes BT claim my line is good for 3meg+ but when I signed up to Tiscali 3rd April 2007, Tiscali claimed I would get up to 8 meg so that is why I signed for a 8 meg package inclunding phone.
What speeds do I get now? Well in the dead of the night I get yes 2 meg, but at “Peak times” or any time when school is out or folks come home from work or lunch time, 300 + if I am lucky.
Yes I have contacted Tiscali help line and was told there was a problem with my line, a lie, after 4, 5 or 6 or calls ( I lost count)to Tiscali they then said there was a problem at Tiscali.
Then one of thier operators in India, I might add a very Pi**ed off
operator told me that I could not expect 100% even to be connected to Ticali at peak times as the network just could not support the level of customers, and, that Tiscali were down grading some customer’s line speeds with out telling them just to keep the network from crashing!
Tiscali and maybe other ISP,s are conning us, why don’t they come clean and tell us the truth? Why? because they are only in it for the money, and stuff the customer.
Will I be renewing my contract with Tiscali? If they do not come clean No! I will go back to BT at lease I know they are rubbish and do not have a TV ad saying “sign up to Tiscali super fast broad band”
I rest my case Mr Tiscali.
I was with Tiscali and had much the same issue, there customer service line to India did nothing but mislead me about the line being at fault, so I call BT and the line is fine then Tiscali goes down for three weeks and its BT’s fault but no it was yet again Tiscali.
I was then told my speed would not go above 1 MG but with BT I get 6 MG as available, then Tiscali tell me they do not support my OS ( Mac ) even though it worked for 3 Years just fine, So I did the switch to BT and I get the speed and support its not perfect but my speed is a min or 4.8 and a max of 6, the irony is Tiscali are now asking for more money when indeed they owe me, The irony of it all.
i think ofcom really needs to issue more fines to these isps only then will they start getting their act together. I can’t see how isps seem to be exempt from contractural terms, if you say go to a garage for a mot and they do not carry out what they should then you simply don’t pay them, until you get the full service. but this is rip off england so i doubt much will change
I am having a very similair problem but i think i have found out how they work. Now lets give the details of my ‘advertised connection’ I have the ‘unlimited 8mb tiscali package’ Basically meaning you can download as much as you like before peak time 6pm till 11pm, how ever if you download allot durin peak time they will start to restrict your internet speed. Now all of the statement is a lie, i shall state why, luckily i get some weekdays off as i am a college student who knows a fair bit about computers so some indian on the call centre cannot tell me garbage. Anyways back to the point i have found out that during weekdays early morning 1am till 5pm the internets is fine speed is 6meg to 7meg which is a download rate of (820kb’s) now i download demos off xbox live play games against gamers from around the world out of peak time but when 4pm (which isnt even peak) People start to come home from work and use the internet you start to notice the internet degrading and when peak time hits then BAM! im down to under half a meg (230kb) now i have followed there guide lines with the fair use policy But this is dreadfull it seems they restrict every user during peak time which is a rip off for people who work during the day and get home at 5pm. They come home to peak time speeds not allowing them to enjoy the internet payed for… But you may say noo its okay because theres the weekends, well that is not true.. ive conducted some internet speed tests on a variety of websites especially www.speedtest.net and it seems even off peak the speed of internet is less than half a meg. Its obvious to many of you aswell that when peak time comes tiscali somehow enables a bandwidth limiter to all of its users no matter how good they are with following the rules. I have given up arguing with them they just wont listen and they wouldnt give two ticks, i am just waiting for this contract to finish and then read reviews of ISP’s on the internet carefully and read the small print!
