In a report in the Financial Times a spokesperson for 3 has claimed that its mobile broadband offering is attracting fixed-line service providers at an impressive scale. Speaking to the newspaper, Kevin Russell, chief executive of 3 UK commented: "We have definitely seen some customers taking mobile broadband as an alternative to fixed line."

Despite the fact that data transfer rates vary enormously according to the customer's distance from the transmitter, the flexibility of mobile broadband seems to be winning users over. According to Morgan Stanley over 50,000 mobile broadband dongles are sold each month in the UK, and a total of one third of new pay-monthly 3 customers are purchasing them. Currently, 3 customers can subscribe to their mobile broadband pay-as-you-go service after buying a USB dongle for £69.99. Top ups can then be purchased for 1GB allowance per month for £10, 3GB for £15 or 7GB for £25. Source: PC Pro
