Virgin Media cautions heavy broadband users

Virgin Media is distributing letters to the heaviest users of its broadband services after changes have been made to its download caps.

Although advertising continues to state that Virgin Media offers a ‘no download limits’ service, the provider will now be reducing download speeds on its heaviest users:

“We are writing to some of our customers to let them know about changes to our traffic management policy,” said Virgin Media in a statement.

“As part of this educational exercise we are letting customers know what the changes mean to them, and why they may see their speeds reduced for short periods at certain times of the day.”

Despite not imposing limits on downloads a spokesperson for Virgin Media said that a small percentage of customers had been using “more than their fair share of network resources which affects the service other customers receive.”

The letter, warning customers of the new speed restrictions, is being distributed after a YouGov survey found that more than one in four broadband users were oblivious of their broadband download limits.
