Virgin Media denies broadband throttling claim

Tuesday 24 June 2008

Following a recent independent campaign to boycott Virgin Media and new allegations of broadband throttling on a post on Cable Forum, the hounded ISP has released a statement denying all allegations.

Responding to the post released by TraxData on Cable Forum the following statement was issued:

"Virgin Media has an open and transparent traffic management policy listed at http://www.virginmedia.com/traffic .

Our policy does not discriminate internet traffic by application and we have no plans to do so. Whilst we do use equipment from Allot within parts of our cable network, this is used to build usage metrics and does not affect customers' service in any way. It is certainly not used to do any form of packet shaping or change internet traffic priorities."

The post by TraxData stated that Virgin Media had been trialling "application throttling" and were planning to reduce speeds of Peer2Peer users down to 512k "both in and out of peak hours for whoever they see "fit" as a heavy user."
