Two different BT ads have been cleared by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after they received complaints for unsuitability. The first commercial featuring Kris Marshall and his adopted family was said to be irresponsible in promoting unsupervised web surfing by young children. However, the ASA upheld the complaint by stating that the voiceover made it clear that the parents in the commercial were concerned about the child’s welfare.
The second commercial, featuring Dragon’s Den star Peter Jones and office-ransacking Gremlins received complaints after parents claimed that the advert had given their children nightmares. This was also cleared after the ASA said that the Gremlins were more likely to be seen as funny rather than threatening. It also confirmed that the Gremlins adverts were already restricted from being shown around programmes made specifically for or targeted at children.
Recently the ASA has also backed BT’s complaints against a national press campaign on behalf of Orange Home Max broadband that claims that customers could save £190 by switching from BT. The Orange adverts have been ordered to be made clearer.
