UK businesses seeking faster broadband

Thursday 09 October 2008

New research from Point Topic has found that 25 per cent of UK workplaces have now equipped themselves with a broadband service capable of speeds over 10Mbps - a rise of 7 per cent since October last year. Speeds are predicted to rise even further as it was found that 15 per cent of businesses already have access to services capable of speeds of 'up to' 50Mbps.

Speaking on the research findings, Tim Johnson, senior analyst at Point Topic, explained: "Over 800,000 workplaces will be in the market for more bandwidth. 45 per cent of UK premises expect to want more speed within the next two to three years and 7 per cent significantly more. "Remote access, remote helpdesks, video conferencing and VOIP are all becoming more embedded in day to day organisational use. These applications are the primary drivers for the increasing speeds organisations require now and in the future," said Johnson. A break down of business broadband speeds showed that 21 per cent of business currently have a connection of less that 2Mbps, 33 per cent work with 'up to' 8Mbps, 12 per cent have 10Mbps connections, 6 per cent have 100Mbps and 5 per cent are signed up to 50Mbps services. It was estimated that a mere 2 per cent of businesses have access to broadband speeds over 100Mbps.
