Buyers' guide: 50Mb broadband

Now that many of us are already enjoying high-speed internet services it's hardly surprising that more than a few consumers are also looking at 50Mb broadband. With a few products offering 50 mb broadband already on the market there is certainly a temptation to bite the bullet and sign up for a deal that offers one of the fastest ways of enjoying the internet.

UK internet service providers are spending more money into upgrading their networks right across the board. That's obviously good news for us, the consumers, as there are lots of deals and offers available, ranging from cheap through to premium packages and these cover the majority of the UK in one form or another.

Of course, the easiest way to find the cheapest deals and prices is to spend time using Broadband Genie to carry out a quick comparison and also read the reviews of what's currently available. Deals change all the time, so while the likes of Virgin Media, BT, O2, Sky and Talktalk might have a certain package or deal available one week it may have disappeared the next.

What is 50mb broadband?

When it comes to genuinely super fast broadband here in the UK then that is presently the 50mb broadband service offered by Virgin Media. There are plenty of other broadband deals that are fast, although none come quite as close to the 50 meg broadband that can be dished out through this provider and their fibre optic network. You may see it referred to as 50mbps broadband too, but it is essentially the same thing.

So what is it? Well, think of the service you may have already and then multiply it numerous times and you'll get an inkling of what to expect from a 50meg broadband supply. While 20 and 24 meg services are quite easily available across much of the UK it's the magical 50mbps broadband internet service that currently sits at the top of the tree when it comes to the fastest service you can get on domestic soil.

Why do I need 50mb broadband?

It's often hard to comprehend just how beneficial a super fast 50mb broadband service can be until you get the chance to experience the power it has to offer. After all, if you class yourself as a relatively lightweight user then the concept of signing up for 50mb broadband might seem like a needless extra. It will, of course, cost you more to do this compared to some of the cheaper and lower specification packages and deals that are on the market.

However, as we say, it’s not until you start tapping into the potential of super fast services like 50meg broadband that you really start to realise its full potential. Now that there is an awful lot of content out there on the internet it can come in mighty handy to know that you will be able to download lots of it not only more quickly but with a lot less stress too.

Now that we have endless hours of catch-up television on hand via the internet it is possible to effectively watch TV shows when you want to see them, simply by viewing them online. The benefit of a 50mb broadband package is that this will be incredibly easy, simply because of the added speed of that extra bandwidth. Virgin Media uses a lot of fibre optic cable in its network and this is seen as the fastest and most efficient means of getting data through.

BT is also upgrading its own network with areas of fibre optic cabling too, so it's likely that in the coming years we'll see an increasingly large amount of 50 meg broadband packages (and larger) become available. This in turn should hopefully encourage broadband providers to make their pricing more competitive too, although with such a large investment needed to upgrade an entire network you may find costs not quite as low as you would like.

How do I get 50mb broadband?

Actually getting yourself kitted out with a 50mb broadband package is straightforward enough. All you need to do is carry out a little bit of comparison using the table above. This outlines the different packages that are currently available. Virgin Media currently has the exclusivity angle on the 50mb broadband deals, which you will see outlined above. However, there are numerous variations of their packages so spend some time checking out which one might be best for your needs.

Don’t forget to try a little comparison on the other components available in a lot of their packages, such as getting just 50 meg broadband, adding phone bundles or a TV option. It is also possible to get all of these component parts put into one big package. You'll ultimately save money by adding more services together although the monthly total on a contract might still be quite high if you plump for the 50 mb broadband option.

But if you consider yourself to be a fairly heavyweight user of broadband, or you have a family that needs the extra bandwidth so that everyone can tap into the same supply and carry one enjoying broadband unhindered then this may well be the best way to go. Remember that some of these deals, although more expensive than many of the cheaper counterparts, will have all of the bells and whistles included. This might be an HD box, a high-performance wireless router and also lots of unlimited calltime packages as well.

What are the benefits of 50mb broadband?

There are endless ways that you'll find the fastest 50 mb broadband deals transform the way you use the internet. Most of the less powerful broadband packages, no matter if they are traditional ADSL or cable, will be rather less flexible when it comes to usage levels. Some deals that may seem cheap on the face of it can also be a little bit more restrictive about how much data you can download, unlike a super fast 50meg broadband service, which will probably give you much more freedom to download what you like.

Remember too that there can also be limits on data transfer when uploading files. So, for example, you may have thousands of digital photos that you wish to store online. This and other data like it can often be subject to restrictions from your internet service provider, which will impose caps on how much you can do in any given period of time. By signing up to a more substantial 50mb broadband package you'll probably find that these inconveniences don’t even enter into it, so you'll be free to upload and download as much content as you like.

Explore the options of 50mb broadband

While we’ve already outlined the fact that you'll be fairly limited when it comes to 50 meg broadband packages from a variety of providers, there may well be quite a lot of choice when it comes to what you get from the different packages provided by Virgin Mobile. Remember too that you may not require quite as much super fast fun as 50 mb broadband can provide, so there are quite a few comparisons available from other providers. For example, it’s easy to find deals for 20 and 24Mb broadband packages that will give similarly high-powered results.

However, if you need the full quota of 50mb broadband then you'll be well advised to plump for something like the Virgin Media deal. Anyone who uses the internet for lots of heavy data usage will find that it really will make a difference to the way you work and relax. Large data files can be transferred in no time at all, while hobbyist's who like to enjoy something like online gaming will find that this is also a better experience thanks to the fastest supply that can currently be bought here in the UK.

What next for 50mb broadband?

So is 50mb broadband and packages that bundle all manner of interactive options the absolute pinnacle of home and business broadband? Far from it because it's not the fastest. You can certainly enjoy 50 Mbps broadband packages in many parts of the country right now, although coverage for these sorts of speeds is not universal. However, in a few years time it may well be possible to enjoy the sort of super fast 50mb broadband speeds that some areas can get no matter what your location.

With an increasing investment in the UK's telecoms infrastructure and, of course, growing consumer demand for packages with higher specifications, you can be fairly sure that in a few years time we may all be enjoying high speed internet services that are way more advanced then the broadband deals we have available right now. In fact, it may even be the case that a super-fast 50mb broadband deal that exists right now might seem slow by comparison when we get to broadband supplies well in excess of 100mb.

In the meantime, however, the magical 50Mbps broadband deal seems to be as good a place to start as any with many more of us needing the added speed, power and efficiency afforded by this fast type of package.
