On 2MB package - pretty reliable, measures consistently well on speed test sites. Just got Sky 2MB which varies from 6Kbit/s (yes really that slow!!!) to 1.8Mbit/s and keeps dropping the connection - suddenly can't get to Google or BBC???
Seeing the raft of bad press for Sky think I'll stick with NTL - least it works consistently.

With the all the many fantastic words in the English I can not exaggerate how utterly unforgivably catastrophically criminally poor this service is. I have many many outstanding problems with this company ranging from a months delay for installations, to 45 min waits on hold to the call centres, to a £150 bill (in error) for one months service. Slow service, shocking technical support and just to cap it off the most irritating repeating hold music that would put most elevators to shame.
I have written on more than half a dozen occasions with no response and probably make on average one call a week for the last year to there call centre to sort out all our problems with no joy.

I have been with NTL for almost 4years and have found them to be very supportive, anytime i had a problem they sorted it almost immediately, now they have been taken over by virgin and although this is a very recent change i am having big problems, all searches have slowed down in fact some times i have given up, i always had google as my search machine but even that is refusing to work so i have had to change. Very unhappy with the change and although this may be teething problems that is no consolation to me when i can,t use my computer. Think its time like NTL to call it a day and change to another company.

Actually telewest / blueyonder which is the service 'up north'. Quite a decent service when its running but our connection runs for weeks with no hitches then goes through peru=iods of constant dropouts. You have to restart the (ethernet) modem to restore service, which is a pain if your at the other end of the house. Blueyonder say it must be our wireless router, there won't be anything wrong with their kit, which you can't access or interfere with in any way apart from rebooting.
Their online help pages are pathetic, by the way. They respond eventually to emails, answer the phone but their 0800 line has very limited usage, they prefer you to use a £1 a minute line.
So overall, better than Plusnet with whom I struggled last year, but not perfect.

I have so many problems with NTL about my broadband and digital. There customer service is appaling, I have phoned them 7 or 8 times in the past week and had to engineers out to fix the problem. They gave me a new box and everything and it's still not fixed. I'm currenly on a friends computer looking for a better service provider.

Definitely recommend - cable is much more reliable (and quicker) than ADSL in my humble (but honest) opnion.
I've used NTL for about three years now for broadband (plus phone and cable), and - I've gotta say - I've never had any problems at all. We run three computers off the broadband connection pretty much all day (home office), and I can't remember NTL broadband ever going down.
The worst thing about NTL is their engineers, who always seem a bit shoddy to me, and always want to take shortcuts.

I have been using NTL as my residential broadband provider for a number of years and have been completly satisfied with the product itself. It has never been 'offline' and my only compliant would be simlar to 'scaredycat' in that their engineers are particularly poor at customer service.
When my engineer called to intsall the service he got off to a bad start by walking mud all through my house (upstairs and down), he had an unusual smell about him and finally, he was reluctant to install the product on my home pc - he preferred that I installed it 'at my leisure' presumably so that he could finish work early! If I had been new to the world of broadband and pc's I would not have been impressed, being left to my own devices to finish the job!

I've had NTL installed at two of my houses now, the connection is mostly reliable although if something does go wrong there doesn't seem to be an easy-to-find status page or phone number (like Pipex provide).
Installation can take a while if you live in central London as they need to do two visits - the first to check availability (even if you already have a box from a previous person!).

sorry but i couldn't help but notice scaredcat saying that cable is better then adsl, well i beg to differ.
I live in the netherlands and we had cable over here too the problem was is at 8 oçlock at night everyone would access the internet causing dramatic speed drop on internet connection, this is due to cable.
All houses that use cable near you are connected to the junction box so when you all connect you share that line so it gets divided by you all and with adsl it is connected to your phone line which provides constant speed 24/7 and i have never lost connection. Also a problem with cable is that when you want to connect another pc you need to ink it with your main pc where with adsl you have 5 connections which means get an extra pc plug it in your modem with pc 1 and your done instant internet. no need for them smelly engeneers round your house :-) and btw any problems you do have type it in yahoo and you get much better answers off forums.
