Buyer's guide: ADSL broadband
When it comes to high-speed internet then an ADSL broadband connection can be the ideal way to start enjoying all that is great about online access. Home broadband users have long been able to dip into the internet and their email with the minimum of fuss and bother thanks to broadband ADSL and if you don’t already have an internet connection or are looking to compare and upgrade then there has never been a better time to get yourself a great deal.
However, if you're new to the comparison game then a website like Broadband Genie can help you pick through the many deals and offers on all sorts of ADSL broadband packages that are available from the likes of Virgin Media, BT, O2, Sky and TalkTalk. You’ll find them, along with a whole host of other internet service providers, who can deliver home broadband services to consumers throughout the UK and all from within Broadband Genie.
It can be a little bit daunting if you're new to broadband internet in its many different incarnations. In fact, ADSL broadband can basically be broken down into two different areas. One is the traditional copper wire ADSL broadband that comes into your home via the BT network, either directly from them or one of the many resellers that offer their own cheap deals. The other option is cable as popularised by Virgin Media.
As a result of lots of different providers and deals, it means that prices are very competitive, so if you compare a few of the packages that you're interested in then the best broadband internet is only a few mouse clicks away.
How does ADSL broadband work?
If you're comparing ADSL broadband availability here in the UK then you'll find that the bulk of your options will be via the older copper wire network as popularised by BT, but another option open to consumers is fibre-optic broadband and this can be supplied to you by Virgin Media.
When it comes to this option then you'll find that there is little room for comparison because Virgin Media is the only supplier of fibre-optic broadband, although it is still possible to compare deals within their own range of products and offers in order to find the best prices that will suit your needs and online requirements.
One of the contributing factors on which kind of broadband internet deals or offers you base your search on will often depend on what kind of coverage you get in your geographical location. You'll find that while BT and other broadband ADSL resellers will often cover most areas throughout the UK, the coverage offered by ADSL cable is rather more limited as Virgin Media has a fibre-optic broadband network that is not quite as extensive across the country.
In fact, you may find that if you're looking for deals and offers on home broadband and spend a little time doing a comparison of prices and packages then ADSL cable might not even be available where you live.
Availability of ADSL broadband?
The best way to determine whether or not you can get the benefit of ADSL broadband is to utilise the postcode checker tool within the Broadband Genie website. This will give you a better idea of what sort of ADSL broadband availability is on offer where you live. Alongside this powerful tool there are other services that you can use for free and these include everything from comparison tables on ADSL prices, reviews of services and a round up of the cheapest deals available at any given time, all of which are updated on a regular basis by the team.
You'll generally find that ADSL broadband is available via BT or one of the other many resellers that you’ll see listed in our comparison tables, right across the UK, although bear in mind than some of the more remote areas of the country might be less well served, particularly when it comes to high-speed home broadband internet. You can also be affected by the proximity of your property to the nearest telephone exchange, which is where the ADSL broadband will be routed through on its way to your house.
You'll also need to look into what sort of kit comes with the ADSL broadband packages that you’re interested in because you'll need an ADSL broadband modem that will allow you to access the broadband ADSL service quickly and efficiently. Most ADSL broadband packages come complete with all of the kit that you need including these broadband modem devices, although bear in mind that depending on the deals or offers you may have to pay a fee for some of the kit.
What sort of price for ADSL broadband?
You'll often find that equipment that you need, such as an ADSL broadband modem, will come as a standard part of the broadband ADSL package that you think will suit your needs. However, you will still need to sign up for a deal or offer from one of the many featured in our broadband ADSL comparison tables and this could cover a variety of different contract periods.
Generally speaking, you will need to pay a one-off installation fee for your ADSL broadband package and this is usually followed by a monthly charge although this can change depending on provider and also what sort of deals or offers are available at any given time. Remember that packages and offers come and go all the time, which is why it’s such a good idea to keep an eye on the comparison tables within the Broadband Genie website in order to keep tabs on the best offers and prices.
As long as you spend time on your initial comparison then ADSL prices should be competitive at the very least, although lookout for extra costs that can be associated with exceeding data usage limits. This area covers the amount of time you spend downloading and uploading digital content. The larger the files that you are transferring then the higher the data usage and there can be penalties associated with this if you overstep the quota limits.
As long as you spend time analysing the small print and terms and conditions associated with the broadband ADSL package that you're interested in then this should not affect you. It is also an aspect of home broadband usage that tends to only affect heavier users of the internet, so if you only dip into the online world or send and receive emails without large attachments then you should be fine.
Nevertheless, it is wise to read up on the relevant information if you see a deal or offer that you’re interested in to make sure that you’re signing up for a package that will be able to adequately cater for your online needs.
What speeds come with ADSL broadband?
Speed is a word that gets used a lot when internet service providers are selling their ADSL broadband wares, and that’s not really surprising because we all like to know that the home broadband that we've got is as efficient as it can possibly be. Of course, there are lots of factors that can interfere with this vision of the perfect broadband ADSL or ADSL cable supply, and these can include being a long way away from the telephone exchange in the case of ADSL broadband or not being in an area covered if it is ADSL cable.
However, the speed of broadband ADSL services have got a lot better in recent years and there is now the distinct possibility that you can get 'up to' 8MB although this is always a little bit of a lottery depending on factors such as those listed in the paragraph above. You'll also find that faster broadband ADSL can also be more achievable if you're happy to pay more money for the privilege.
Indeed, if you’re a heavyweight broadband ADSL user who needs a service with all of the bells and whistles then it's possible to get ADSL cable from Virgin Media that can deliver speeds of up to 50MB.
How do I change my ADSL broadband?
Of course, it's entirely possible that you already have a high-speed internet service, either via ADSL broadband though the copper wire network as popularised by BT and other suppliers or though ADSL cable, as served up to many areas in the UK by Virgin Media. Although the deals, offers, products and services offered by these companies are often top-notch we can all occasionally be unhappy with the package that we've got even when we do compare and check reviews before we buy.
As a result, there's no reason why you shouldn’t consider a change of services, from one provider to another. If you live in an area that is quite well served by both traditional ADSL broadband and ADSL cable broadband then it might be worth looking into packages that are on offer from a rival supplier in your area. The ADSL marketplace is certainly a very competitive one, with many cheap prices, so if you're prepared to use the power of comparison then it may well be time to see if you can bag yourself an ADSL or cable broadband bargain.
Remember that all of the ADSL broadband and cable comparison tools are all at your disposal within the Broadband Genie website, along with an extensive overview all the home broadband deals and offers that become available throughout the UK. By spending a little time doing a bit of careful comparison you'll hopefully not only get faster and more efficient broadband but you should also save some money too.
