| Hardware | Monthly price | Contract | Speed Download speeds are supplied to us by the broadband providers, and Ofcom's guidelines state any maximum speed quoted must be available to at least 10% of subscribers. Actual speeds will vary depending on your location, so you should do a postcode check on the broadband provider's website to find out your likely speed | Downloads 'UNLIMITED downloads' means there are no monthly usage caps, service restrictions or additional charges for data use. There may be some form of traffic management policy in place - check the broadband provider's webisite for details | Effective cost The average theoretical monthly cost after adding in the setup cost and then deducting any special offers or discounted months. If the contract length is less than a year we assume you keep the package for a year. For comparison guidance, hope it helps! | ||

Which is the best broadband provider?
The aim of Broadband Genie is to help find the best broadband provider for you. However there is, of course, no such thing as the best broadband provider - each has it's own features and benefits that may appeal. What we do is help find the best broadband provider for you by making the packages and pricing of all the leading UK broadband ISPs as transparent and easy to compare as possible.
Finding the best broadband package can seem daunting, with so many suppliers offering so many different deals, but Broadband Genie is here to make it easier. Start by reading our general guide to finding the best broadband below, then use our easy to use broadband deals comparison tables to compare today's best offers.
Finally, remember you're not buying broadband from us - you will be buying it directly from the broadband provider you choose: you'll click through to the official website of the ISP, such as O2, BT or Virgin Media, and place your order directly with them.
Best broadband package for you
The first thing to consider is what you need from your home broadband deal. Packages vary primarily by price, length, speed and data cap, and many of them also include extras - either freebies to encourage you to view this deal as the best broadband deal, or bundles which may save you money across a number of products such as telephone or television.
The fastest broadband, or the biggest data allowance, does not necessarily indicate the best broadband for you - the important thing is to decide what you need, and buy accordingly.
Availability
Before considering what might be the best broadband for your needs, you'll need to check availability. There's no point searching for the best broadband package and then finding that it's not available in your area, so the first thing to do is use our broadband availability checker by putting in your postcode on the page linked above (don't worry - we don't use this information for other purposes). This will narrow down the options to those that relevant to your area.
Bundles
Perhaps the next thing to consider is bundles - combining products for a better overall deal. You might consider taking television and telephone service, or mobile broadband, alongside your home broadband deal. Some of the best broadband packages give you a great deal on the extras, so it's worth thinking about; but again, only sign up for what you need - it's not the best broadband package for you if you're paying for something you're not using.
Broadband speed
The rules about how broadband suppliers can advertise speedy are a complex affair, and liable to change as time goes by: We used to have 'up to', but the current trend seems to be for a 'max speed' rating. No matter how it may be defined though, the important thing is this - use a postcode checker with whoever you're going to get the broadband from before you commit, as they will be able to give you an accurate line check to let you know what you can expect.
Speed may vary a little according to supplier, but also according to what type of broadband you choose - whether you go for ADSL (through a standard BT telephone line), fibre broadband, or fibre via cable (if you live in an area with Virgin Media cable coverage). There will also be other variables such as how up to date your telephone exchange is and how far away you are from it (the further you are away, the more the signal can slow down).
If faster connections are available in your area, whether you opt for them should depend on what kind of internet user you are. If you watch a lot of movies/television online, download a lot of large files or play online games, you might need to choose a fast connection - if you're more of a browser and emailer, the really fast connections probably won't offer value for money.
Data caps
Many broadband deals will specify an upper limit of data you can download each month, with penalties for over-use. Others will advertise packages as 'unlimited', only to put 'fair usage' polices in place that you'll want to check out before signing up - be sure to read the small print.
Again, thinking about how you plan to use your connection will help to decide what to go for. If you download a lot of music or movies or otherwise spend a lot of time on data-heavy work, the best broadband choice is one with a higher cap, or unlimited downloads. If you're a lighter user, you can get a cheap deal with a lower cap. And if you start low, you shouldn't have a problem upgrading to a more expensive bundle if you outgrow your limit.
Which is the best broadband provider for you?
Once you've looked at speed and data caps there are other variables you may also want to consider in making the decision on the best broadband deal.
One is what's included, and examples here include internet security packages, wireless routers, email addresses etc. Consider what you need and look for a provider who is throwing it in for free. Another possibility is brand name. For example, you might feel the best broadband provider for you is BT, as you know the name and are comfortable with a familiar company.
Reading both our overviews and customer reviews of each broadband provider helps give you a bigger picture of which providers are really offering the best overall broadband experience. For example, who offers the best customer service, or technical support? Each broadband supplier has its own page of information on Broadband Genie.
