Which is the best broadband provider?
The aim of Broadband Genie is to help find the best broadband provider for you. There is, of course, no such thing as the best broadband provider - each provider has it's own features and benefits that may appeal: what we need to try and do is find the best broadband provider for you, by making the packages and pricing of all the broadband ISPs as transparent and easy to compare as possible. Finding the best broadband package can seem daunting - with so many suppliers offering so many different deals - but Broadband Genie can make your life easier.
Start by reading our general guide to finding the best broadband below, then use our broadband deals listing to compare today's best offers. Finally, remember you're not buying broadband from us, but directly from the broadband provider you choose: you'll click through to the official website of the ISP such as O2 and place your order with them.
Best broadband package for you
The first thing to consider is what you need from your broadband. Packages vary primarily by prices, speed and data cap, and many of them also include extras - either freebies to encourage you to view this deal as the best broadband deal, or bundles which may save you money across a number of products such as telephone or television.
The fastest broadband, or the biggest data allowance, does not necessarily indicate the best broadband - the important thing is to decide what you need, and buy accordingly.
The first thing to consider in making the decision on the best broadband for your needs, is availability. As there's no point searching for the best broadband package and then finding that it's not available in your area, the first thing to do is use our free broadband availability checker. This will narrow down the options to those that are relevant to your area.
Perhaps the next thing to consider is bundles - combining products for a better deal on both. You might consider taking telephone service or mobile broadband alongside your broadband deal. Some of the best broadband packages give you a great deal on the extras, so it's worth thinking about; but again, only sign up for what you need - it's not the best broadband package for you if you're paying for something you're not using.
Next there's the question of speed. Most broadband deals advertise their connections as "up to" a certain speed, as they cannot guarantee each and every customer will experience that speed, all the time. Broadband speed will vary according to supplier, but also according to what type of broadband you choose - whether you go for ADSL (through a BT telephone line) or cable (if you live in an area with Virgin Media cable coverage), and other variables such as the type of telephone exchange. If the faster connections are available in your area, whether you opt for them depends a bit on what kind of internet user you are. If you watch movies online or play online games, you might need to choose a fast connection - if you're more of a browser and e-mailer, then the really fast connections might not be the best broadband connection for you.
Next up is data caps. Many broadband deals will specify an upper limit of data you can download in a month; sometimes with some expensive penalties for over-use. Again, thinking about how you plan to use your connection will help to decide this. If you download a lot of music or movies or otherwise spend a lot of time on data-heavy work, then the best broadband choice for you is one with a higher cap, or unlimited downloads. If you're a lighter user, you can get a cheap deal by going for a lower cap.
Which is the best broadband provider?
Once you've looked at speed and data caps there are other variables you may also want to consider in making the decision on the best broadband deal. One is what's included, and examples here include internet security packages, wireless routers, email addresses etc. Consider what you need and look for a provider who is throwing it in for free. Another possibility is brand name. You might for example feel that the best broadband provider for you is BT as you know the name and are already happy with their service. Reading the customer reviews of each broadband provider on this site can also help give you an overview of which providers are really offering, not just the cheapest, but the best overall broadband experience.
