About Orange

Orange broadband wireless routerAfter a rather rocky start to its fixed-line broadband adventures, since mid-2008 Orange's home broadband service has improved significantly. Its packages offer good value, especially for people who also have other Orange services, and the broadband is now reliable, although the support still leaves a bit to be desired.

Orange's parent company France Telecom bought UK ISP Freeserve in 2000, renaming it Wanadoo. Wanadoo became part of the Orange brand in June 2006. The company set out to nail a big chunk of fixed-line market share by offering 'free' broadband to customers taking up a new mobile phone contract. While the ploy worked - it now has more than a million subscribers - it backfired a little, as the service (both internet and customer) was terrible - it was named the worst ISP in Britain by BBC's Watchdog in March 2007. Once it had ironed out the worst of the issues, it began to once again offer 'free' fixed-line broadband to people taking out a new mobile phone contract of £30 per month or more.

In March 2009, Orange announced it was trialling 20Mb home broadband. Although no date for a role-out was given, it was hoped it could begin before the end of the year. Interestingly, the service will be offered for the same price as its current 8Mb offerings.

I've been with Freeserve, Wanadoo and now Orange for over 10 years now. I've never had any problems and was exteremely happy with the service they provide over the years. However, they have recently upped my charges from £23 per month to £32 per month halfway through an 18 month contract! I'm sure everyone expects things to go up a few percent a year, This is ridiculous. MAC code requested. There goes another loyal customer.

Absolutely brilliant. I regularly receive a download speed of 6 MB from an 'up to 8MB' package (BT reckons my line can only accommodate 4MB). The livebox is wonderful and you can get free UK calls outside peak periods through 'second line' by connecting a phone to the livebox. I've never had any problems with connection drop-outs or loss of service. I've been with Freeserve then Wanadoo until they were bought out by Orange.

I signed up for their broadband retention package for less monthly cost and tripled my download speed because I didn't want to leave such a good service. The monthly 10GB download limit is more than enough for my needs but I think they're offering unlimited packages now.

The only downside is probably the high charges they charge to contact one of their technogeeks for help with setting up the Livebox.
