I was a student in Hull and like everyone else had to use Karoo and found the same problems as others are experiencing. A friend said that if everyone had a choice that they would get Karoo, this resulted in a major argument which resulted in me calling him fu**ing deluded.

I have moved out of Hull and now have Virgin Media, so just in case he was reading this and to everyone else who thinks Karoo is great, move out of Hull for a while. Use another Broadband provider, then when you go back to Hull you will finally understand how wrong you are.

@katz49 - perhaps you'd like to expand, seeing as you seem to know everything about 'tuning your setup' (whatever that means). Actually, don't bother, I'll tell you what's happening - it's one of two things - either you're talking out of your backside, or you live right next to the exchange. The majority of people don't live right next to the exchange. I live about 2 miles away from it, and I get a maximum of 2 MB/second at peak times. Karoo say that they don't restrict your connection at peak times, but if I sit there on speedtest.net at 11:59PM I have ~2MB/sec, then at 12:01AM I have 6MB/sec. Every night this happens, so it's not a coincidence... I know that 12PM to 8am is considered 'off-peak' but it's not as though everybody sits there waiting for 12 o'clock to close their internet connection is it...?

I used to get 20MB/sec with BT in Scarborough, and a mate of mine in Sc**thorpe gets 50MB/sec with Virgin. The truth is Karoo are years behind all of the other ISP's and we're left with no way of doing anything about it. We can complain, but it's not like we can leave and go elsewhere. Karoo love this position, it means they can carry on as they are without having to worry about customers defecting to another provider.

Lets just clear one thing up - you can't 'fine-tune' your setup. There are a few major factors that can slow things down - these are distance from the exchange (out of your control), your telephone wiring (which is only a matter of having a well-fitted socket and decent extension if you're using one), and finally your router - whether it's ADSL or ADSL 2 (and most routers made within the last 5 years are ADSL 2).

Why can't people differentiate between GB (giga-bytes) and MB (mega-bytes). 1 GB is equal to 1000MB, so if you really were on a 10MB per month service, you'd probably get through that in 5 minutes. Also, Karoo no longer operate an unlimited service. I'm on the top package which is 150GB per month.

You should really get your terminology right if you're going to start a rant about something....

All I can say is not one of the negative comments makes sense, I can only assume they have little idea how to tune their setup, I regularly get 14-15mps even at peak times.

£17 for 20mb's a month, and at that speed, whats to grumble about (Mid)

Karoo is just ripping all of us off..The speed they tell you is a lie.I suposed to get 10mb download speed,at best i get around 5mb.Peak times is just like a land line connection a joke..My friend has a Virgin package, he gets free UK telephone call`s 20mb download unlimited,(That means unlimited not like Karoo ploy`s)He
also get`s virgin`s tv package included. All that for less than i`m paying just for karoo`s crappy service.thats not to mention the crappy technical help when you can get through.I would no way recomend Karoo to no one.I relish the day when another broadband provider comes to Hull.I will be the first to sighn up.If anyone has heared of an alternate internet provider coming to Hull please post here.

The services & the connection were not too bad a year or two ago, then they implemented the adsl 2 and forgot about usage growth and it all went wrong, plus at first you only got the adsl 2 line if you upgraded your service, then they implemented new download limits. How many companys can call a unlimited service unlimited and then limit it to 75MB between certain hours. Like the Mid Package you only get 10MB, this was OK however now most people watch youtube & BBC iPlayer to name just 2 of hundreds of services that demand high amounts of download, I mean I get to watch 10 1hours programmes and thats my limit gone and even less if you download it in HD, come on Karoo sort it out, stop spending money on advertisements and on sponcerships when you should be upgrading the lines and services, I mean you could of probably upgraded half of hull for the money you have thrown away on Hull City sponcership, I wounldn't normally mind that but since you have the name on the shirt for all to see, yet the point is???? No one knows who or what Karoo is, never mind the fact that unless you are unlucky enough to live in HULL and surrounding area you have no need to know. And If you could also tell us all why you need to spend so much on advertising a service that we have no choice but to get from Kcom anyway, I think its about time someone knocked the directors head together, PS I am avalible and it would be a pleasure to Help with this ;)

We are as good stuck with karoo as we cannot have any other service due to Kcoms line rental charges to other companys such as BT and Sky and they know if they do let people have a choice of ISP that we will ALL leave, especially when you look at some of the ISP offers out there.

Karoo is a big shame for the Internet Industry. The amout of money being charged for broadband is absolute rip off. Atleast if you get the speeds then its fine. But its not like that.I pay 17 quid to get 1mb speed and my mate in london pays 15 per month including sky, broadband and telephone connection with speeds upto 10meg. What a joke for us in living in Hull. Its time this monopoly is removed and free choice should be given to people to go for other competitior services.

I wonder if any one sitting in KC office would look at these and think from the perspectives of the people here. KC is an absolute shame. Waiting for the day when a competitor can provide his services and I shall be the first to change my provider.

I really don't know what I was expecting when I signed up to Karoo Broadband. I know that what I get certainly wasn't it. I expected to be able to get on line any time I chose. Whoops! Silly me. The none wireless connection is intermittent and trying to get on line at certain times on a weekend/early evening is par to dial up. In some cases even none-existent! This becomes a real pain in the unmentionables, having just taken something to the checkout, when making a purchase, the connection fails. Living on the periphery of the karoo network means that I and obviously many more like me, are having to susidize those people lucky enough to live closer to the exchange. They get a faster speed for the same price. I think perhaps Karoo should allow us to pay for what we actually receive instead of what they say we could! Though I think some of the staff would benefit from a course in customer care, the technical help is in fact FREE! Some ISP charge premium rates. At the moment I'm very optimistic. When renewing my O2 mobile phone contract, I was informed that BT is already in this area and getting stronger by the month. Hopefully, they'll have full coverage by my next renewal (Get discount for O2 customers)! That might just give Karoo the wakeup call it needs to sort out some of the problems facing it's customers.

    by Karoos Great...honest at 19:11 on 1 Jun 2009

Karoo really is a joke. I was once proud of the fact that Hull and surrounding areas had our own telephone company offering great prices - remember 5.5p for an unlimited local call? We have had wireless with Karoo for 2 whole months. We live in the West Hull villages and often get power cuts - whoopie yet more joy getting Karoo technical to get us back on again (something to do with Thompson router and village exchange or some rubbish). Without power cuts we have lost lines - took Router and Dongle back to Karoo twice for them to say everything was OK. Finally managed to speak to someone called Tad (at Karoo) on Saturday and he spent nearly 2 hours getting it to work with us - he even managed to upgrade our speed from something like 1.4mb to 5mb at no extra cost. Unfortunately today 1/6/09 - the router and dongle work but the broadband keeps failing - still waiting for someone to call us (suddenly started working). Karoo treat it's customers as morons who will pay whatever they ask, they won't accept responibility when things fail. The amount of times they told us to take our laptop to the router and connect direct - eh desk top computer bit of a problem - telling us we should have not gone wireless - the only way we could get broadband without paying for them to install yet another telephone point in our house was wireless and so it goes on. I would love for other firms to come to the area and offer better prices - and to be frank even using the Karoo infrastructure the problems will be the same - but I would feel smug that I got one over a company that thinks customer service was something other companies did.

If you haven't heard I suggest you sign up to the following site http://www.hullnet.co.uk/ the chap concerned is aiming (with enough support) to contact other potential ISPs to show them there is a demand for an alternative provider.

Also, I would also suggest you plot your notspot/slowspot area on the following map http://www.broadband-notspot.org.uk/coverage-map.html#12,53.782397985652395,-0.295257568359375,

I have the 8Mbps package through karoo - just checked their own test and it said I could receive upto 6.5mbps in my post code area.
Have just done a check with pc advisor - my download speed came back as 1.22 mbps and upload speed of 0.37mbps.
We are all being taken for a rise by Karoo - it's about time we had the choice of who provides us with our ISP.

how many people would be willing to start a petition against the monopoly karoo has in this area? Lets show K.C. just how many customers are unhappy with the services and demand they allow other providers into this area.

Ok, First of all karoo's Download speeds. Karoo offers an 8Mb package, The importand point is thats Megabits not MegaBytes. Put simply a Megabit is one eighth of a MegaByte:

    8Mb = 1MB

This is what you will see when you are downloading something from the net. So for the gentleman getting a 1 meg download, congradulations your probably getting exactly what you paid for.

Next, Line attenuation. Put simply the further you live from the exchange the slower you download speed will become. Sorry but thats just the way it is. 5km is about the limmit and you should expect so loose about 15% of your maximem download speed for every Killometer up to that (0-5Km).

All that said however Karoo (Kingston Comms.) do impose stupidly low download limmits. Their Premium service £30 per month is a very meek 75GigaBytes and lets not even get into what they jokingly refer to a Technical Support and competative pricing.

All this said however there are no alternate internet service providers available in the Kingston-upon-Hull area which makes debating the merits of this ICP something of a moot point.

Yup, a monopoly. The Kingston/Karoo monopoly in this area means we pay way over the odds for the service - £50pm combined is extreme.

The only (but big) plus side re the broadband is that I have been using it for seven years and have never had any problems. Working from home it is used all day and I don't think I've ever had to call tech support except to change to wireless, which also works as it should.

However, that as it should be and nothing special, its just that many of the others seem below standard. The discrepancy between what we get from Karoo/Kingston and what the market is supplying is now very large.

never at the speed it offers, hopeless trying to get tech support can wait up to an hour for this. No other telephone co. in Hull, so unable to go with cheaper /more efficient supplier, they have the monopoly. Very expensive for what they supply. I pay £27.00 pm for 8 meg
