About Sky
While the aptly named Sky television service is beamed down from above via the Astra satellites, its fixed-line broadband deals are grounded firmly in BT's phone lines. What many tend to do is put the two together, along with a phone line, to get a broadband/TV/phone bundle to rival the cable offerings of Virgin Media. While comparable in many ways, you won't currently get the internet speeds you can expect from the top Virgin Media deals. That said, there's lots of choice and some pretty nifty internet speeds if you're in an area covered by its Sky Broadband Unlimited offering. Also, it has a good support record with fully British based 24/7 service and support teams.
The BSkyB we know today was the result of firms Sky Television and British Satellite Broadcasting merging in 1990, now marketed largely as Sky. Its fully digital service was launched (quite literally, with the Astra 2A satellite) in 1997, since when it has moved from strength to strength. Sky Broadband now has more than two million subscribers, putting it fourth in the UK pecking order behind BT, Virgin Media and the Carphone stable (TalkTalk, Tiscali etc).
Sky has been offering some great deals on its Sky+ and Sky+HD box packages. Sky+ allows you to record programmes - even a whole series of your favourite show - into the box itself, without having to worry about video tapes or DVDs.

My download speeds are under 0.5Mb during peak times, I understand that during peak times my speed will be slower, but 1/20th of what you are paying for is not acceptable any way you look at it.
I live less than half a mile from the BT exchange - honestly i could throw a stone from my front door and just about hit it, at 2am on a saturday night I can get speeds of 6.5-7.5Mb so its nothing to do with line quality or distance from the exchange, sky tech support said themselves its down to BTs traffic shaping during peak times.
The "UP TO" statement is fair enough but if I may use an analogy if I buy an 8 ounce steak I know that when cooked it will weigh less than advertised, but if it weighed 0.5 ounces when it was served to me I would deem that unacceptable. There are limits companies can stretch their advertising.
What makes it even more sickening is that whilst BT are picking and chosing the speeds Sky broadband customers are getting I know people on BT broadband that are getting a more reasonable peak time speed of 3-4Mb whilst im on a measly 0.5Mb!. I am not unreasonable, I would have no issue with speeds on 3-4Mb during peak times - half the speed I am paying for seems more than accommodating on my part. Report abuse
