About Sky
While the aptly named Sky television service is beamed down from above via the Astra satellites, its fixed-line broadband deals are grounded firmly in BT's phone lines. What many tend to do is put the two together, along with a phone line, to get a broadband/TV/phone bundle to rival the cable offerings of Virgin Media. While comparable in many ways, you won't currently get the internet speeds you can expect from the top Virgin Media deals. That said, there's lots of choice and some pretty nifty internet speeds if you're in an area covered by its Sky Broadband Unlimited offering. Also, it has a good support record with fully British based 24/7 service and support teams.
The BSkyB we know today was the result of firms Sky Television and British Satellite Broadcasting merging in 1990, now marketed largely as Sky. Its fully digital service was launched (quite literally, with the Astra 2A satellite) in 1997, since when it has moved from strength to strength. Sky Broadband now has more than two million subscribers, putting it fourth in the UK pecking order behind BT, Virgin Media and the Carphone stable (TalkTalk, Tiscali etc).
Sky has been offering some great deals on its Sky+ and Sky+HD box packages. Sky+ allows you to record programmes - even a whole series of your favourite show - into the box itself, without having to worry about video tapes or DVDs.

There are plenty of sites that allow you enter your Post Code or Phone Number (land line) & find out what speed you can "sensibly" expect to get. So, do your home work first before you buy anything. Researching the technology will also help.. if you're looking to buy a 16Mb service do NOT expect to actually get 16Mb (it is almost impossible). So, if you're rejecting providers on this basis.. you'd better get used to disappointment.
I'm using Sky Max & I get a maximum download of 8Mb, which is better than the exchange or Sky's estimates. A peak times this can, and does, drop to anywhere between 4-6Mb.. but, that is to expected. If you're not expecting this then you are going to be severely disappointed. But, to be clear, this disappointment is really coming from your lack of understanding of what you're trying to buy.
PS I agree that Sky's Customer Services could do with some major improvements.

Never had any problems with the internet as 2Mb is the max speed for my area.
But I do remember having a connection problem when I first set up the broadband.
I called the Tech support which were no help as they told me to move my PC nearer to the main telephone exchange - great as this is in my hall way and I use a desktop and wireless laptop' anyway as they only follow a script and if your problem is not on their script the only answer they have is 'Computer says no' or 'move nearer the main telephone exchange'
I manage to resolve the problem myself with a simple reboot which their support guys didn't even advised specially after installing their new software. 'More training needed for the tech guys'
My SKY+ box also needs to be rebooted whenever new software is downloaded automatically from Sky - haven't spoke to SKY yet about this issue but has anyone else had this issue?
