Cheapest Broadband
As the recession rumbles on, now more than ever the smart consumer is looking for ways to reduce their outgoings. One of the best ways to do that, of course, is cheap deals - and that includes finding good cheap broadband offers.
Research indicates people won't cut back on the services they have during a recession, but they will look to spend less on them, which is where Broadband Genie comes in - we have the best advice on how to find the right cheap broadband deal for you.
How to find cheap broadband
Finding a reliable source of information on cheap broadband deals can be time consuming - no-one wants to spend hours trawling around the internet or the high street doing price comparisons; which is why at Broadband Genie we've done a round-up of the best cheap broadband deals on the market.
The first thing to check, of course, is what's available in your area. This is particularly important if you live outside of the bigger cities - there's nothing more frustrating than finding a great value cheap broadband deal, only to discover the service doesn't reach your area. So your first port of call should be our postcode availability checker, which is available on our home page. For a more accurate reading, be sure to enter your phone number too.
Once you've established which services are available to you, the next thing to think about is what services you need. You can often make your cheap broadband deal even cheaper by taking more than one service from a particular provider, so if you're willing to switch your home phone service, for example, you may get a better price for both the phone and the broadband. Also, remember to take account of what services you already have - in the same way that providers bundle services for better value, they also often offer attractive deals to existing customers. For example, the cheapest of the cheap broadband deals available at the moment is actually free - if you're already an Orange customer on a pay monthly mobile plan, you can have up to 10GB per month of downloads plus a free wireless router and evening & weekend calls. That's definitely a cheap broadband deal, as it won't cost you a penny!
Also when you're looking at cheap broadband deals, don't forget to keep an eye on what's being offered in terms of business broadband. Business broadband is essentially a home broadband package and you don't have to be a business to get it. Business deals can offer a faster service, more generous download limits and extras such as free support packages, top notch internet security or prioritised network traffic. Business broadband deals aren't always cheap broadband deals, but some are very economical for what you get, and they may be ideal if you'd classify yourself as a heavy user.
Things to watch out for when looking for cheap broadband
When you're looking for cheap broadband deals, there are a few things to look at besides the price tag. The first is what extra fees you'll be charged for the service - either one-offs or ongoing costs.
Some deals have a set-up fee, which can impact significantly on the overall cost of the service. For example, if you pay an £80 set-up fee for a 12-month contract, compared to a deal with free set-up you're essentially adding almost £7 per month to your deal over the contract time. It is also important to keep an eye out for deals that start out cheap but soon go up in price. You may get the first three months cheaper, but a simple calculation about the length of time you intend to keep the contract may show the saving is pretty meaningless over a long period of time.
Other deals will have necessary extras which have to be paid on an ongoing basis. Line rental is one such cost: don't forget to compare like with like when you're looking at pricing. If you get cheaper line rental by switching to a different provider, then this factors into the overall cost, and if you're looking at one deal which shows the prices without line rental, don't compare that directly to one which is priced with line rental included.
Overall we're very lucky in the UK to have such a big range of broadband providers with a wide range of pricing structures, and with extras, incentives and freebies thrown in as well. With a bit of clever comparative shopping, it's possible to find a cheap broadband deal which will give you everything you need, at a price you can afford to pay.
