Navigating the TV and phone bundles
With the digital switchover set to be complete by 2012, we're all getting used to a bunch of new television channels. But while a set top box may be good enough for some, they don't cut the mustard for others: whether its because you simply can't get good enough reception, or because you're desperate for even more channels, a TV phone and broadband deal may be the one for you.
For each service you add, you should see a reduction in the overall cost of the deal, so if these are services you already have - or are going to get - it makes sense to take the plunge and order them together, as it will save you money in the long run.
Often called 'triple play', TV and phone and broadband bundles are offered by Sky, Virgin Media and BT, with each having their own merits. Be sure to confirm these services are available in your area before you get your heart set on one of them though, as coverage is far from universal. BT
With BT Vision you get up to 40 Freeview TV channels, plus a whole host of on-demand content. You can also store up to 80 hours of live TV. Extra packs can be added, including films, kids, music and sport. The deals also include a free wireless router (the Home Hub), plus free evening and weekend calls. Broadband speeds only go up to 8Mb.
Sky
With the Sky+ Box you can pause and rewind live TV, as well as store up to 40 hours of programmes without having to worry about dodgy old videotapes. You automatically receive more than 200 channels, with plenty more available to add on including Sky Sports, Sky Movies and packs such as music, knowledge and children's. You'll get the Sky+ Box, free wireless router, plus free evening and weekend calls. The broadband part of the package is delivered through your standard BT telephone line. In certain areas, it is possible to get Sky Broadband speeds of up to 16Mb.
Virgin Media
You will need to get Virgin Media cables installed in your home to receive these services. Its TV deals offer between around 50 (low end) to 165 channels, including everything from Sky Sports to film channels, plus TV on demand including the BBC iPlayer. For an extra fee you can add the V+ HD box, which lets you pause, rewind and record live TV. Lucky punters in certain areas can get Virgin Media super-fast broadband, which is up to 50Mb. Others should still expect pretty nifty speeds of up to 20Mb.
