i'd like to use Skype on Mobile broadband on my laptop (Particualarly Skype-to-Skype calls) to my Girlfriend over long distance, particularly when going over to visit relatives or friends. im aware some networks do not allow VoIP/Skype over their mobile broadband services, but i'm uncertain which ones Allow it with certainty.

i'm aware 3 (Three) offers the service free but i'v read terrible reviews about their service reliability.

i found that this question had been asked before, but the answer at the time (2009) seems vague and uncertain, i wondered if there was any updates or new information -

can you recommend any good Mobile Broadband providers taht offer Pay as you go plans that Skype works on besides 3 (three)?

    Hi Kyle,

O2 and Vodafone are fine for Skype and other VOIP services, there's no blocking going on. T-mobile only allow it on their Max packages. Orange may not work either, though I can't confirm that for definite at the moment.

You shouldn't discount 3 though. All services get bad write-ups, the main thing is to check that a network offers enough coverage in your area.

    Use these signal maps.

    T-mobile
    Vodafone
    3
    Orange
    O2
    Virgin

They're not super accurate, but should give you a general idea of what to expect. You'll need 3G to use Skype.

Similar question as posted by Kyle, only difference is that I'm a bit less computer literate !

I have a new laptop with built in webcam and already use a 3 mobile broadband as standard.
I would like to skype to skype with my parents in France, they do already use skype with other people.

'You'll need 3G to use Skype.' What does this mean ?

And do I need to download skype from 3 to use it free ? I read that somewhere but the more i read the more confused I get.

3G is a high speed data connection for mobile broadband and mobile phones. Without it the internet will be very slow, not good enough for Skype and barely sufficient for web browsing.

All dongles support 3G, the question is whether you can receive a signal in your area. It's important to use the coverage maps I linked above to check this as even though you can get a mobile signal this does not necessarily mean you will have 3G. Note that when using the coverage checkers they don't always call it 3G, some refer to it as high speed internet or similar.

You can get Skype from www.Skype.com. It is free to download.

vodafone 3g wireless mobile broadband does NOT allow skype to be used, as of April 2012. I can successfully use the TIM wireless broadband, also 3g, but definitely not vodafone. why would anyone say it's available? have been working with this for one week. can't stand liars in big companies...
