My (rural) download speed is about 4Mbps. I attempted to access a pdf on a website which was 12MB. I gave up waiting! Is the document actually having to be downloaded to me or am I simply accessing it where it is held on another web site? How long should it take? I did calculations (probably wrongly!) ie if 12 MB is 96Mb, then shouldn't it take only 8 seconds to download?

    12MB/S Is Around 96Mb yes 12.4MB/s Is 100Mbps

And a 12MB should take no longer than a few seconds. But remember that server your downloading from is probably sending that file to 100 Other clients at the same time.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. However, the web site I'm approaching is a small sports club one. I doubt that lots of people would be downloading at the same time. I did a bunch of speed tests yesterday, as life in the slow lane was becoming so unbearable. the results were astonishing. Mid morning the download speed was 4.37Mbps(that's as high as it ever gets). It then fell off over the following hours until at 1730 it was wallowing down at 0.31Mbps. and yes I do mean 0.31 download NOT upload!! this is not an unusual situation. It's just that I've never bothered to monitor it before. Is there anything to be done? I've done all the usual checks and I've spent hours trying to get Talk Talk to ...Talk! It's costing me pounds in "your-call-is-important-to-us" (but not important enough to answer it) calls where I get passed from one to another with no help forthcoming.
