Am considering buying a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet with 3G but do not want a monthly plan. Is 3G available for these and if so is it using a dongle? If it is a dongle and seeing as this tablet does not have an USB port presumably an adaptor is available to enable USB devices to be connected?
Thanks in anticipation
Tony

Report abuseTablets don't generally use dongles (the Archos G9 being a notable exception, it has a slot specifically for them on the rear).
There is a 3G version of the Galaxy 10.1, the SIM card will be inserted into the body of the tablet like a mobile phone.
You could use the SIM from a dongle if you already own one or just get the SIM by itself, those can usually be had free from the network, or at least very very cheap (99p territory). If you buy the tablet outright it will not be locked so you can use any service and there will be no need to sign up for a contract. -

Report abuseI bought a Galaxy 10.1 last November and got a payg sim card from the local Vodaphone shop to go with it. I loaded it with £10 worth of data.
I now find that the payg was not all it seemed. I thought it would be like my Vodaphone payg phone where the credit last until it is used. The card I bought for my Galaxy has a time limit of 30 days for each £5 worth of data one buys - what a swiz.
I want a payg sim card for my Galaxy which isn't time limited as I very rarely need to use this feature. I was wondering if anybody can let me know if such a sim card exists on the UK market and if not whether if there is a similar payg unlimited time dongle that I could connect to the Galaxy via a usb connector. Would a dongle work ok connected through a usb connector cable?
By the way, I am delighted with my tab. I take it to the gym with me everyday and watch all sorts of tv programs that I have downloaded at home using wifi. It makes life on the treadmill relatively painless. I'm also delighted with all the apps that are available at such reasonable prices (most are free) compared with the price of software for my laptop.
Super duper say I. -

Report abuseUnfortunately Basil there are no networks offering unlimited PAYG mobile broadband. The last to do so was Vodafone but they stopped it a few years back.
Do you have a smartphone? You could use that as a modem by wirelessly tethering it, I do that with my non-3G tablet. -
Report abuseThank you Matt for your helpful response. I don't have a smartphone but would be prepared to spend up to £50 on one if there was a facility for non time limited payg data on it. In other words if I could load it with money which would be spent on calls, texts and internet data transfer until it ran out and then could be topped up. Do you happen to know if that is possible?
If it is I would tether my Galaxy 10.1 to it on the rare occasions when I need internet access via the mobile phone network. I know nothing of tethering and am assuming that one does not have to be a technical whiz kid to set it up. -
Report abuseHi
My plan was when i bought my 10.1 was not to get the 3g version now wish i had BUT, i try tethering it from my smartphone and it never seems to connect am i missing something.

Report abuseWhat smartphone have you got Colin?

Report abuseHi Colin
Assuming you have an Android phone here is the procedure for this OS.
Menu > Settings > Wireless & Network settings > Tethering & portable hotspot > Portable Wi-Fi hotspot and put a tick in this box.
Move to your tablet and with its Wifi turned on do a network search and you will come across one called “AndroidAP” click on “connect to this network” and that’s it.
Simple enough but, and there is always a but, you have a open network with no security so while in the tethering menu you will see a menu for”hotspot tethering settings” go to this setting to set up security and for changing the name of the network although the name of the network is not important but change it anyway.
