We are a) buying a laptop with wifi already in it, and b) hoping therefore to relocate our desk top out of the dining room into the attic room (study) there is a phone line up there, but it was not powerful enough when we tried with ordinary phone line, as it is a cable travelling from the main phoneline up the building outside and in through the attic window!!
We have sort of been told with a dongle and Wi Fi it should be much better and we can therefore free up some much needed space downstairs in our little cottage, and just have the laptop in the dining area. Can you advise. I am quite computer literate, but must confess to not really understanding WiFi and dongles!! I have a memory stick so know the size of a dongle.
Dongle for desktop?

Report abuseHi Marilyn,
If you already have broadband in your home then you don't need to get mobile broadband.
It sounds like the best thing for you would be to have a wireless broadband router in your living room, then you can move the desktop upstairs and use the laptop anywhere around your house via wireless.
You may already have a wireless router, they are usually supplied by ISPs now, but if you don't they're very inexpensive. The router will connect to your phone line and provide wireless connectivity throughout your home.
Since your new laptop has Wi-Fi support already the only thing you may need to buy would be a wireless adapter for your desktop PC. These can come in the form of a USB device that looks like a USB memory stick or as an internal expansion card. -
Report abuseIf you opted for a dongle in the end, you could get the dongle dock and create a wifi hotspot in your home too.
