    Hi Donna
2G, or second generation networks, are the digital networks developed in the 1990s and are still in place, covering most of the country. They have largely been superseded by the 3G network that the main providers now offer, but 2G can still be used for mobile internet services in areas where the 3G network does not provide coverage. Connection speeds on 2G are slow.

Have you used the various providers' coverage checkers to see what mobile service you'll get in your area? A list of the main providers can be found on this page: http://mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk/dongles - then on each provider page you can find a link through to their coverage checker.
    Hope this helps
