Editor - MattHi Mark,
Have you looked at Android phones? Android is the Google operating system and it's available on a wide number of handsets now. There are some entry level smartphones such as the LG GW620 InTouch Max and HTC Tattoo which can be had for free on cheap monthly contracts. The slightly older HTC Hero is also relatively inexpensive.
If you want something that's closer to the iPhone in terms of style then have a look at the higher-end HTC Desire, HTC Legend or Sony Xperia X10. Any of those can be had for less than an iPhone. You can find deals on those and other phones in our smartphone price comparison section.
Android doesn't quite have the huge range of the iPhone app store, but there are still tens of thousands of apps to download and because Android is open source there are far fewer restrictions on what you can do with your phone. It's a really great alternative. We detailed some of the best apps in this blog post.
