A lot of mobile phone contracts come with unlimited internet bundles, I've read that it is possible to use your phone as a modem via usb or bluetooth, this interests me as I think I could double it up as a modem, and would negate the need for me to buy a Mobile Broadband dongle (I am hoping to both upgrade my phone and get mobile internet). Question is, does anyone have experience doing this, is it possible to get a stable connection using your phone as a 3G modem? I play a lot of online poker so a stable connection when I am not at home is a must.

    Regards

    Hi Shane,
I frequently use my mobile phone as a modem and have found it to be very reliable, though obviously you'll need a 3G signal to get any kind of decent experience, browsing on 2G is not much fun.

The only thing to be aware of is that very often providers prohibit the tethering of phones for this purpose, so you could be charged extra or cut off if they find out. Whether they will or not is another thing, I've never had a problem but then I only ever used it for web browsing and email. If you watch video and play games and your usage creeps up they might catch on.

We have a blog post about tethering right here that contains more info.
