    Hi Katie,
If you have a poor connection with one provider then swapping to another ISP probably isn't going to make much difference - the problem will most likely be due to factors outside their control such as the quality of the lines and your distance from the exchange.

If you can get Virgin Media in your area then that is worth trying as you should be able to get a better connection speed through their network, otherwise you're best off just finding the cheapest provider possible to save some cash without worrying too much about the speed. Have a look at our broadband comparison section here for the latest deals.

My ISP is Virgin media and my advertised speed is up to 10Meg. Last night between 9pm and midnight i ran the test every half hour or so and consistently got a speed of just over 2Meg. This means i can't download and online game simultaneously. Of course the key words are UP TO, i just wish OfCom would get of their backsides and do something about this! Today at 1pm i'm getting a speed of 8.4Meg, go figure.

I have just moved home to a different area. Prior to this we phoned the Post Office for confirmation of the speed in that area. They confirmed that the line available was the same as the line we were leaving behind. That of 8Mg. They went through the process of completing the removal / new home request, which took the contract back to a 12 month deal.No problems I thought?? How wrong could I be?!! The line went live a week or so later in our new address. The speed is barely 437kbps! I have had the line checked and found no issues, after all , we were told by the Post Office that it was at the time of their check,6.7mg was the 'norm' for this line. I have since been told that there is a 10 day period that the line has to go through a test procedure for its limits. This was not made aware to us when we asked for the 'house move set up' ! We are now 12 days on and still struggle to get 476kbps! Where can I go from here? Surely this is not as advertised, therefore ...unfit for purpose?
    Any ideas please?
    Paul

Do not change to Demon Broadband. I have been with them for 12 years with excellent service. I used to get download speeds of between 4-6meg in an area with an 8meg service. My speeds dropped to below 1meg. I contacted their service desk 11 times to be told my problem had been put to engineers. Stlii not much better and I have had a 'clean' connection put in from the BT dropline so I have proven that it is not an internal problem. I agree that they are trying to strangle services to heavy users on old tarrifs.

Here’s a quick and easy way on how to speed up broadband connection. Go to Control Panel>>Hardware and Sounds>>Device Manager>>Ports>>Then right click and choose Properties. Change the bits per second to maximum and click OK.
