    Hi Gavin,
    Right now there are no mobile broadband dongles advertised as Linux compatible and no supplier will offer support to Linux users. That doesn't mean they won't work however. There are some types of dongles (often those made by Huawei) that will work out of the box with some versions of Linux, others will require additional configuration.

    You can find a list of dongles that are compatible with the common Ubuntu Linux (and other Linux distributions) here.

    Before buying a dongle you should check with the store or mobile broadband supplier to find out the model number, then you can check the above link or simply Google search it to find out if anyone else has used it with Linux. If you can, take your laptop into a shop and ask to try one of their dongles before buying.
