Is the laptop really free?

It's common for mobile broadband websites to refer to bundled laptop deals as being 'free'. This is slightly misleading, however, as in order to qualify for a new notebook or netbook, you generally have to sign up to a contract that's longer than the average, and pay more every month over the length of the deal, leaving it not a cheap option.

The laptop is essentially subsidised, not free; think of it as more like being a hire purchase offer. There's nothing wrong with that - in fact, this can be a handy perk for many users; as an example, it's a great way a student to kit themselves up up with a brand new laptop without coughing up for this expensive gadget in one go.

Why a free laptop with mobile broadband?

Laptops will set you back quite a bit of money, especially if you want to buy a brand new model. This can be an economically demanding purchase for any household. Of course, you're still paying a little extra for the privilege of acquiring a new laptop but mobile internet packages that include a new computer give you the chance to spread the payments over an extended contract term. Contract length tends to vary between 12, 18 or 24 month periods.

The great news is that bundle deals are rarely an empty token gesture - you won't find any reconditioned laptop models here, or notebooks that manufacturers have had trouble getting off the shelves. If you take a look at the list above you will see all the UK providers (Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile and 3 Mobile) offering laptops from major manufacturers that offer both style and portability. Sometimes you may also find other incentives are thrown into the mix, such as free WiFi minutes, USB modem dongles or free texts.

And at the end of the contract, provided you have kept up with repayments, you've got a fully paid up laptop! This means that if, when you get to the stage where you're looking for a new contract to sign to, you could save yourself a bit of money by looking for dongle-only deals - that is of course, unless you love to always have the latest gadgets at hand.

Mobile 3G internet bundle deals with 'free' laptops are a relatively new phenomenon. However, as they're proving very popular with customers, expect to see more bundled packages popping up in the near future.

Are there any disadvantages?

It can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of acquiring a free laptop with a new mobile wireless broadband deal, but, as with any contract offer, you should take the time to consider your budget.

As we've already mentioned, the laptop isn't 'free'. You will always pay more for a mobile broadband contract that offers a free laptop than you will for a dongle-only package, or even a pay as you go option. You're advised to work out a practical budget for money you have free to spend on a monthly basis: remember, subsidised laptop offers tend to have a two-year contract. This is a long time to be tied into a package, so you must make sure that you will be able to afford to pay your bills every month for the entire duration. If you don't keep up repayments the likelihood is that, not only will you be disconnected from your provider but you will also be asked to hand back the laptop - even if you've paid for most of the contract length.

If you're concerned about costs and want to find out if you can realistically afford this extra bill every month, it can be a good idea to work out how much you're paying for the bonus of a free laptop with a particular mobile broadband deal. With a little bit of investigative work, you may find that it's actually cheapest to settle for a dongle-only package and try and scout out a separate bargain laptop offer elsewhere. Try and compare prices of a contract deal with the same provider without a laptop and deduct this for the price of a contract with a laptop. It will then be very easy to see how much extra you're paying for the privilege of acquiring a brand new bit of kit.
