Guide to laptop dongle deals
Since Mobile Broadband Genie became the first mobile broadband comparison website back in September 2007, laptop dongles - and their popularity - have moved on at an amazing pace. In a few short years, dongles for laptops have gone from being the latest must-have buy for tech heads and gadget freaks to something many rely on as their only internet connection; in June 2008, telecoms watchdog Ofcom reported 133,000 dongles were being sold per month – double the figure for the previous year – and it shows no sign of slowing down.
The mobile internet started out as an extremely patchy service on top-end mobile phones, mainly used for checking email, but as mobile network technology improved apace, so did the quality of the internet connection. As 2G connections began to give way to 3G, and now HSPA, high quality mobile interent connections via laptops became a reality, and the age of the dongle dawned.
So what is a dongle?
In the context of mobile broadband internet use, a dongle is a small electronic device about an inch wide and a few inches long that plugs into a USB port on your computer, laptop or netbook. Also sometimes described as mobile broadband 'modems' or 'sticks', these little gadgets normally contain everything you need to connect to laptop internet; simply plug the device in, and the software needed will install directly from the dongle. Once up and running, you can use your computer to access the internet via a mobile network, using the same airwaves as your mobile phone.
Who, where and why?
All five major UK mobile network providers – that's O2, Orange, 3, T-Mobile and Vodafone – as well as Virgin Media (and BT, currently only for business customers) are now in the mobile broadband dongle business.
The real beauty of the mobile broadband dongle is that you can plug one into your laptop or netbook anywhere and, as long as there is a mobile network signal, you can surf the web and check your mail. The five major players all have subsidised laptop deals in place now too, showing they know the appeal of cheap broadband on the move.
While a few of the 3G internet providers are selling laptops with built-in broadband connectivity, they would seem to have limited appeal: a dongle will always be the more popular option, because it gives so much more flexibility. You simply pop it out of your laptop and into your netbook, or even your home PC – why limit yourself to one machine?
Which dongle is best for me?
Well you're certainly spoilt for choice; a quick look at mobile Broadband Genie's main comparison page will give you around 100 different deals to choose from, the majority of which will include a dongle. However, these deals can vary hugely; just like when you're looking for a mobile phone or fixed-line broadband offers, the dongle market can look daunting.
However, don't be put off – our ' Mobile broadband comparison: the basics' guide will walk you through each step of the process and you'll be up and running with your new mobile broadband dongle in no time. Not only can you find your cheapest option by comparing prices but you can read current 3G broadband customer reviews and compare their wireless broadband experiences to see which mobile internet is for you.
