2011 Awards: none
This was the first year in the Road Trip for TalkTalk, and it didn't cover itself in glory. However, it was also a long way from being an embarrassing début. It uses a relatively solid Huawei model (the E1552) and uses the Vodafone network, which has performed reasonably well in our previous trips and is overall considered to be good for mobile broadband.
While never looking likely to win any of the award categories, TalkTalk hit a top download speed of more than 1Mb and an average just below, completing more than the average number of speed tests. In fact, average is the best way to describe its performance – streaming, downloading and uploading included.
On the plus side, the dongle installed very easily and was simple to use, perfect for what we expect will be TalkTalk's target audience. Mobile broadband is very much a complimentary service to its key area of home broadband and landlines, so its customers are consequently more likely than most to be trying the waters of mobile broadband for the first time. Here, simplicity is key.
While it's unlikely to be the first choice of those looking for mobile broadband outside of TalkTalk customers, or for switchers, if you can pick it up cheap as a supplement to your current package it's worth a shot. Just make sure you're in a good coverage area and that you aren't wanting the earth on the move.

About TalkTalk
Talk Talk launched in 2003, after the consumer arm of Opal Telecom was bought and rebranded TalkTalk by The Carphone Warehouse. Through a series of acquisitions (most notably AOL, Tiscali and Pipex), TalkTalk became one of the biggest names in UK fixed-line broadband and is now a stand-alone company once again.
The mobile broadband side of Talk Talk launched in 2011 thanks to a deal with Vodafone to use its network for the service. This means you'll get a Talk Talk dongle and billing, plus its customer service team, but you will receive your data from the Vodafone mobile broadband network.
Currently Talk Talk is only offering a rolling one-month mobile broadband contract with 1GB download to existing customers, as it is very much testing the water and only offering mobile broadband as an extra service to its core home broadband business.
