Samsung shows see-through OLED laptop at CES

CES 2010 begins in earnest today and among the vast number of shiny new things on show in Las Vegas is this intriguing laptop from Samsung. As you can see from the photos, there’s nothing unusual about the design, but pay close attention to the screen — it’s transparent.

The laptop is a prototype and while a screen with 40% transparency isn’t that much use for getting some work done, it does present some interesting opportunities for head-up displays — imagine a car windscreen with augmented-reality style satellite navigation.

The concept is reminiscent of the ASUS Origami concept from last year’s CES — that too had a transparent screen that could be placed back-to-back with another Origami for a combined display.

Samsung seems to be on a roll with OLED displays at this year’s CES — it’s also showing off a prototype 14” 3D display that’s just 1.6mm thick. The electronics are contained in a box that sits below it, but it’s still an impressive feat of engineering.
