The Google Nexus One — available now for £640!?

A few UK electronics dealers seem to be chancing their arm with Google Nexus One imports. Online entertainment emporium Play.com is offering the Google Nexus One for sale in the UK for £600, while Amazon.co.uk has it listed at £639.

Grey imports usually command a hefty price premium because they provide a way to get products that aren’t otherwise available locally. This isn’t the case with the Nexus One, though — it may only be on sale in the US, but Google will gladly ship a Nexus One to the UK within a few days.

Google sells the unlocked Nexus One for $529 and it will work with any UK 3G network with an appropriate SIM. At the time of writing, that price converts to around £390 and although you’ll have to pay 17.5% VAT, mobile phones are not subject to any import duty.

So, throw in some sundry courier costs and we reckon the final bill for an imported Google Nexus One will be around £480 — or £120 less than Play.com’s price and a whopping £160 less than Amazon’s.

To be fair, neither Play.com nor Amazon.co.uk are offering the Nexus One for sale themselves — they’re sold via affiliate traders mobilesNmore (we presume the ‘more’ refers to the mark-up) and Cyclops Electric Sports. Even so, both deals appear to be counting on UK buyers being ignorant of Google’s easy import option, so lets hope no one has fallen for it.
