The Dell Mini 5 — in detail

Engadget has managed to gets its hands on a prototype of the Dell Mini 5 and has posted some detailed first impressions of this Android-powered mobile internet device.

The Dell Mini 5 has a 5” capacitive touch-screen with a 480 x 800 resolution (but no physical keyboard), and runs on a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth and GPS are built-in, and, according to Engadget, there’s 405Mb of RAM and 1.63Gb of user storage.

So far, so oversized Android smartphone — and that’s pretty much the impression we get from Engadget’s write-up. The main benefit of the big screen obviously lies with video playback and web browsing — the Mini 5 will purportedly support H.264 video by the time it goes on sale and multi-touch support should make browsing a breeze. Even so, a device with 5” screen is pretty big to slip into a pocket and the Mini 5 certainly looks a little silly when held up to the ear to make a phone call.

Dell hasn’t announced pricing or a launch date for the Mini 5 yet, and the specifications could well change in the meantime. Until we do know more, here’s Engadget’s hands-on video — you can see lots more photos over at the site.
