iTunes sells 10 billion songs and someone wins $10,000

Apple sold 10 billion songs through the iTunes Store some time on 24 February — that’s 10,000,000,000 downloads, zero fans. The lucky downloader of the 10 billionth track has yet to be announced, but they can expect an email from Apple soon to notify them about a $10,000 iTunes Store gift card with their name on it.

iTunes shifted 1 million songs in its first week of operating in 2003, and hit 1 billion downloads just one year later — on February 23, oddly enough. That milestone was reached when Alex Ostrovsky’s purchase of a Coldplay track, and bagged a $10,000 iTunes gift card, a new iMac and 10 iPods into the bargain.

There’s no news yet on what the 10 billionth download was, but judging by the list of the 20 most-popular songs in the store, we don’t hold out much hope for it being anything good…
