Steve Jobs says “no’ to iPad-iPhone tethering

Steve Jobs has apparently confirmed that there will be no iPhone tethering on the forthcoming iPad.

Jezper Söderlund of Swedish tech podcast site Slashat emailed Apple's CEO to ask: “Will the wifi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?" The reply, apparently from Steve Jobs himself, was a simple “no”.

The email headers of the reply have been analysed and the message has been confirmed as legitimate — or at least it originated from Apple. Steve Jobs has been known to reply to emails before, of course, so it’s not great stretch that this one-word message is from him.

Since Apple sells an iPad with built-in 3G, it’s no great surprise that iPhone tethering will not be supported, even if does contradict common sense. Common sense, of course, also dictates that sensible iPad buyers will be better off with a Mi-Fi device like the Novatel Wireless 2352 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot for mobile data use. This allows any Wi-Fi-enabled device to get online via a single 3G connection, which means you don’t have to pay separately for a 3G USB modem and 3G iPad contract.
