Android 2.1 hacked to run on T-Mobile G1

The T-Mobile G1 was the first Android smartphone to go on sale in the UK and while the design may now be a little obsolete, the rest of the hardware can still cut it.

We’ve already covered hacks to enable multi-touch and install Google Maps Navigation, but now Android hacker extraordinaire ‘ Cyanogen’ has figured out how to install Android 2.1 on the venerable smartphone (perhaps he was just tired of waiting for the rumoured official update).

The hack isn’t without a few compromises and some features have apparently had to be dropped in order to fit the Android 2.1 OS image into the G1’s 256MB ROM. Still, the operating system is installed and working — as you can see from this video.

The hacked Android 2.1 OS image is in a private beta test at the moment, but Cyanogen recently tweeted that he hopes to release the first public beta version tomorrow).
