"Laptop batteries are dangerous", say Japanese boffins. "Duh", say we

The design of lithium ion batteries, as used in most rechargeable electronic devices (including laptops) is flawed, according to Japanese researchers.

The Register reports that a spokesperson at the Tokyo Institute of Technology described the average lithium-ion battery as "quite a dangerous little box of energy" and that designs need to be changed in order to make rechargeable batteries safer.

Given that there have already been numerous safety scares about laptop and mobile phone batteries (including a number of explosions), it's a little surprising that it's taken a scientist to figure out that lithium ion batteries are dodgy…
