Another new Xtreme mobile processor from Intel
Intel has formally launched the Core 2 Extreme X7900 mobile processor, just over a month after it announced the Core 2 Xtreme X7800.
The new 2.8GHz chip is intended for use in gaming laptops and like its slightly slower sibling, is 'unlocked' and can be overclocked by laptop manufacturers for even greater performance. Overclocking a processor does make it run that much warmer, something that is seldom a problem in a desktop PC but laptops lack the room for large, esoteric heatsinks.
The chip was launched at the Leipzig Games Convention, where Intel also demonstrated the X7900 working in two laptops - the Asus G2 and Dell XPS M1730 'Beast'.
