ThinkPad X60 Tablet PC screen bezel update

ThinkPad X60 tablet screen bezel problemWe reported on the screen bezel issue that's affecting certain ThinkPad X60 and X61 Tablet PCs back in August, but although Lenovo pledged to look into it, there's been no word since then.

We have an X60 Tablet in for a group test at the moment, and I can confirm that it too suffers from the same screen bezel problem. It only affects the bottom bezel (with the ThinkPad in laptop mode) and only on the left and right sides.

There was some speculation that heat generated by the screen in these areas was weakening the adhesive that held the bezel in place, and while I have no idea if that's the actual cause, the symptom certainly tallys with it.

With the bezel lifted in this way, the TFT panel actually moves around inside its frame when you open and close the lid, and that can't be good. I've taken some photographs to show what it looks like, but it isn't the easiest thing to capture, so you might need to use a little imagination....

There is, however, a recent post (dated 12th October) on the forum where this problem was first brought to light. It reads:

I am happy to report that we do have a solution for the bezel separation. The most detail I have on the fix right now is that it is actually a revised bezel part. It will take several weeks for the parts to become available through our various service organizations. I would recommend waiting to request service until the parts are in ready supply to reduce the time your notebook is out for service. When the new bezels are available, we will do a formal announcement with more details.

The information is from a first-time poster, so it's not clear whether this is an official update or not. I am waiting for confirmation from Lenovo though, so I'll post more information as soon as I have it.
