Global mobile penetration reaches 50%

Mobile subscriptions have reached 3.3 billion - equivalent to 50% of the global population, reports research company Informa. This figure was reached just 26 years after the first cellular network was launched in 1981 (no surprises that it was in Scandinavia). Mobile networks now operate in 224 countries across the globe - in 1987, the number was just 87. Informa adds that 90 per cent of the world's population are now covered by mobile networks. The company also points out that the latest subscription figure does not mean that half of the world's 6.6 billion population now has a mobile subscription: in 59 countries mobile penetration is greater than 100%.
